If Gene Roddenberry had a bigger production budget, this "crappy fight" would definitely have been more impressive. But he DIDN'T, and he had to "make do" with what he had (especially during the first season). Filming in a canyon outside of Hollywood was his only alternative- staging this confrontation on a Desilu soundstage would have made this seem MORE "crappy".

That creature was a Gorn. It supposedly had strength about 50 times greater then a human. Although it's slow it has no vulnerable points on it's body at all. Once you get tired fighting him your dead. You have to know the context of this episode before you judge this fight. Kirk had to construct a cannon with raw materials to beat this thing.

This believe it or not set the standard for trek. As the episodes went on the fights got more exciting. This was a early one, I think it's during mid 1st season.

I love how Kirk can barely lift the 90 pound rock but then is able to toss it 20 yards. Also love how a creature who barely does damage with a bear hug can lift and launch a 900 pound boulder.
