Very Mozartish. But he has to be careful, he has a timbre that is indicating a fragile voice. It's a bit too "open", something that often ends up in a shrill and pressed voice later in life.
I really enjoyed this production - Yvonne Kenny especially is amazing.
I do like Hobson, but my current favourite is Topi Lehtipuu for this aria. I have been taken to task slightly for this opinion. I find Lehtipuu's intonation and tone better in this aria. Do you guys this is a fair enough opinion?
I have a feeling this is what tenors back in Mozart's day sounded like---before Puccini and Wagner were even born! Pure, unadulterated, full of line...this aria was made for Hobson's voice! Bravo bravo.

Pleasant enough, but for me the tone is a bit monotonous. This singer doesn't have enough range of expression for my taste. He's a tad unsophisticated and boring. I guess I'm used to hearing better musically schooled tenors internationally. Maybe if he had the advantage of some interpretive training, it would help.
you know, I'm usually a fan of really BIG voices. But I have to say, I've become a very big David Hobson fan, his voice is just very pleasant to listen to, and I enjoy everything I hear him in. bravo david
This is so beautiful. DH is amazing. I bought the dvd because of this video and love the whole opera. Yvonne Kenny and all the other singers are terrific too. Thanks!
Hobson was just 29 when he recorded this beautiful aria - Ferrando was his first Mozart role - during The Australian Opera's Melbourne season in March 1990. Three months later he sang Rodolfo in the world premiere of AO's Baz Luhrmann production of La Bohème ... and the rest is Australian operatic history!
No, THAT voice is no longer heard because it has matured into a warm, rich, rounded sound, more often heard in concert than opera for the past few years, due to Hobson (and many colleagues) being out of favour with the former OA administration. The exiles are now making welcome returns, with Hobson's first Melbourne OA gig in 3 years (as Eisenstein) at the State Theatre, in May. (FYI, his recent OA Candide, in Sydney, displayed a voice in great shape - as will shortly be heard on his latest CD.)
Well, no dount there is all kinds of politics with OA. There are singers out there working with some of the other companies who are phenomenal but don't get a look in with OA
As for DH, I wish him well. All voices change over time, of course.
Just watched him in 1993 La Boheme at Sydney Opera House. Wonderful voice and what good looks.

Is it still possible to get hold of this on dvd?

DH was quite young here - 1992 or 3 if I remember correctly which would have put him only at about 32 - 33. What a wonderful aria and gorgeous man

You're perfectly right... this voice already sound rather ugly.

The director should be hanged for having the Guglielmo wandering around the piano upstaging him.

I couldn't count the number of times I have listened to this beautifully sung aria - on DVD, CD and even on my iPod - and it never fails to thrill.

Indeed, but what has he done operatically lately? Pretty much zip! Too much too early? The voice is just not there these days....
