I don't buy that for a minute. I think half of his stories are bs and told purely for comedic effect. No way does a upper-west side socialite with his face plastered all over tv, shop at a glorified Walmart. Plus, a rich guy doesn't need to "stock up on savings."
He's spotted on the subway regularly and grocery shopping in Whole Foods stores. Being rich doesn't mean you HAVE to be a snob in an ivory tower existence. Besides, he's old money and it's new money that usually feels the need to buy overpriced stuff constantly to display their wealth and try to impress people.
