@warblerab Funny you should ask, for I do show good sportsmanship. I´m all for that. It graces the game. What I am against is to be forced to smile, shake, bow or wear masks. This is not the former USSR. With all the dependency on bureaucratic rules it begins to look like it or even surpass it, I say. To put it another way: The way it is taken now, it only attracts nerds while really great independent minds steer clear from it. Can we blame them?
wow mr short skills on knowing the rules, i know we were talking in chessclub about rules and they are like yeah this one guy knows thenm all he is amazing, i dont know any rules, but i do think if your gonna be that rude you dont desrve to be playing chess !
Why are they making such a big deal about a handshake? It's a shame to the game of chess that a technicality like that exists. Let the dickwad be a dickwad and punish the player in a way so that the game isn't compromised.
Did he REALLY have to go to an arbiter and complain about his opponent's rudeness?
@herpderpmonkey just how would you suggest punishing the player? If the "dickwad" didn't want to lose on a technicality, he should have shook Short's hand.
@warblerab Did you even read my comment? He can punish him IN the game. If a professional athlete isn't cordial to his opponent, you think it's mandatory to cause a forfeiture and deprive the audience of an awesome game? I swear, games have the most idiotic technicalities once institutionalized.
@uchihadante77 I doubt Kramink wants to shake Topalov's hand either. Topalov is a jerk. He should be ashamed of himself accusing a player of cheating without evidence.
We need this rule in tennis. Serena scumbag Williams refused to shake the chair umpire's hand at the US Open after launching a tirade of abuse (not the first time).
Only in this case the low-class bitch should be kicked out of the sport forever.
I disagree with that rule. Thought in my opinion, It’s poor sportsmanship not to acknowledge an opponent with a friendly handshake, but I don’t think someone should be forced to do so.
Cheparinov was like, I will play mind games by not shaking Short's hand and win the match. 2 mins later, Cheparinov has lost the match by forfeit, lol !!!!!
Cheparinov isnt doing this out of disrespect for the game, he should not have been penalised he made his replying move, People seem to forget comments made by Short on players and games which were way out of line... surely that does more damage to the game than not shaking hands?
I think Mr. Nigel should have played the game and punish him over the board if he was so insulted, that would be better then calling arbiters and saying look look he does not want to shake my hand.

So if an opponent has no arms they can never play chess since they can't shake hands? What if you have a phobia of touching other people? Come on, shaking hands has nothing to do with any sport, if someone doesn't want to shake they don't have to, it adds to the drama!
excuse me? nigel short bragged about sleeping with tony mile's girlfriend right after the man died, hes been extremely arrogant and rude about a number of things and in my opinion shows very little class with a large number of subjects
@ridewave444 I'm totally with Short on this issue but you and the 23 who 'liked' this comment are totally wrong.
Short does not have class and integrity. I base this assertion on the fact that in Short's pre-match interview with Kasparov he childishly alludes to a nickname Kasparov earnt owing to his hirsuteness. And to top it off in another tournament he fucked a competitor's wife; hardly the actions of a man with "class and integrity".

mmmcheese1 one is right, many ways: taking back moves (kasparov, Azmaiparashvili), getting assistance from computers (Naiditsch), co-conspiring with fellow countrymen to resign against you (Bu Xianghi), even fabricating games and sometimes entire tournaments. If the desire is there, people almost always seem to find a way.
Even afterwards, they made them replay the game and Short took that Bulgarian baby boy to school. good for nigel for staying more informed than his opponent then taking legal advantage of it!. i have seen & heard club player that directed a terrible verbal racial insult just to put him down & better his chances of winning, and they both compete in similar circles!,, so does that mean that next time they meet that player B has to absolutly extend his hand to player A who is still ok with what he said ???! or lose the game without being given a chance to lose it on merit??? VERY NOSY RULE
one could do that and even go TO jail in north america no matter how terrible the insult WAS because of the bloody lawS and who struck first garbage , player B COULD NOT AFFORD GOING TO JAIL AND ALSO RISK GETTING BANNED FROM THAT CHESS FEDERATION FOR STRIKING A WELL KNOWN MASTER , HE SIMPLY DID NOT WANT TO be BANNED FROM TOURNAMENTS AND COMPLAINT TO THE DIRECTOR TO KICK THE MASTER OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT ,BUT HE SAID HE COUL`NT HEAR WHAT WAS SAID .
Cheparinov apparently knew enough about the rule to know he could not be forfeited until he refused the arbiter's request. So, this was clearly a calculated insult. Unfortunately, the rules are what they are, and a player is not penalized for this behavior unless he disobey's the arbiter's order to comply.
Short won the game on the board, which was the greater victory.
Shaking hands is only a nice polite thing to do before the game and should remain optional. Chess is already complicated enough, why would anybody be paying attention what could possibly be a "calculated insult"?
You're right it's a complicated situation. On one hand it looks like Short is just looking for an excuse to put the Bulgarian camp in an even worse light, handshake or not, it doesn't seem like a big deal.
And then on the other hand I looked at the footage of the incident Short looked pretty frustrated by the way he was blatantly ignored. Just do the damn handshake, and have a friendlier match. I've tried myself sitting 4 hours in front of someone I was on bad terms with, it's not recommended.
Have any of you seen the footage of the boxer who walked to the center of the ring after the opening bell for round one sounded, extended his glove to his opponent, and then proceeded to receive a devastating knockout punch to the head? Maybe Ivan saw that match. But, in chess, it works the other way 'round.
- Well all you know i'm gey. I trying to shake my hand with mr. Cheparinov (Chep in bulgarian slang mean huge c(o)ock) but my hands some how go over his chep. I was trying for second time to shake mr. Chep again but but i cant control my self and again my hand go over mr. Chaperinov chep...
Guys guys ... you are so foolish. I see you are still thinking in a communist vs anticommunist fashion. First of all - Kramnik started all this and everyone said "Yeah, he's guilty". And after Kramnik was defender by couple of british and us chess players now everybody says "Oh, Topalov is awful, why are they acting like this".
Pls don't acuse Cheparinov. The only person responsable for this nonsense is Silvio Danailov. He ruined the reputation of Topalov and now wants to do the same with Cheparinov.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So, after that 2faced attitude bulgarians decided to ignore him as a person., but since Cheparinov had to play with him, he decided not to shake hand, only if he forced to do it by the refs, because how can you shake hand of someone who's moral and etique is like that and who betraded you in public.
(Everybody would be happy to be a Topalov's lucky charm back there, 'cause he played damn good!). Year later Short was participating actively in campaign against Topalov and said in the interview that he noticed something wrong in Danailov's behavior already in San-Luis.

"I claimed a point" - is not a honorable and manly behavior. Such 2faced players are not deserving the recognition, also his game is not at the top right now and probably never be. First he dumped the shitloads of crap on Topalov and his manager and surprised?
Topa himself shaked hands with Kramnik,so what was Chepa's problem? He got what he deserved for his childish behaver and then he changed his mind when he was told the rule.Well, too late.
If he could get away with it, I would do that in every game to p*s off my opponents. Another nice Bulgarian promotion of chess
Cheparinov later said he would shake hands after talking to the arbiter. Then, it was *Short* refusing it and just taking the point. Somewhat hypocritical by Short, especially since the rules state that the rules state the game is forfeited if he still refuses after the arbiter asks him to.
But you shouldn't forget that Short hasn't exactly been nice to the bulgarian camp (including cheparinov) Don't you think his words were insulting? I recall that the bulgarian camp make an official complaint towards Short's behaviour in writing columns and FIDE said they were right in doing so.
I'm not condoning (spelling?) what Cheparinov did, but Short isn't a saint in this aspect.
This is a good thing. Topalov-Cheparinov-Danailov are a pack of *ssholes. The sport will be better off without them. Hopefully they will never shake hands again.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't Cheparinov's decision to refuse to shake hands. Probably -- like Nigel implied -- it was a collective decision and I'm thinking Danailov was the main influence.
It looks like Gump had a fat lip on the video - presumably given to him - with justification - by Chep. Whilst recognising that chess should remain polite at all times I feel sure that there must have been a less draconian solution. Presumably Darrell Hair was the arbiter!
Great action by Nigel. Even if in the end the arbiters will have to correct their decision, it is good to point out that this behaviour can't be tolerated. In every sport, the greeting comes first. Chess, once even considered "a gentlements sport" is not different from that.
Really disgraceful attitude by Cheparinov. This Topalov-Cheparinov-Danailov group has been behaving in a way that is not good for chess. I hope FIDE does something about it at some point.
these eastern bloc people have douche in the blood, I know, dealt with them.

Short ''suggested'' that Topalov had cheated during the World Championship in San Luis, Argentina.
His remarks were published in the Indian publication DNA.
I use the word suggested because Short was not concrete enough to be sued but was concrete enough to smear Topalov.
Indeed this was a typically sly English method of saying several things at once.
Neither Short or anyone else have ever substantiated these accusations.

Short is a little scumbag, claiming a win just because somebody didn't shake his hand lol. Chepa got future, but Short is just short of prime!
chidori10x 3 years ago
good for nigel for staying more informed than his opponent then taking legal advantage of it!. i have seen & heard club player that directed a terrible verbal racial insult just to put him down & better his chances of winning, and they both compete in similar circles!,, so does that mean that next time they meet that player B has to absolutly extend his hand to player A who is still ok with what he said ???! or lose the game without being given a chance to lose it on merit??? VERY NOSY RULE
chessgames 4 years ago
hmmm... does anyone else ever have the need to just hit someone in the face? what a douche!
jubangas 3 years ago
one could do that and even go TO jail in north america no matter how terrible the insult WAS because of the bloody lawS and who struck first garbage , player B COULD NOT AFFORD GOING TO JAIL AND ALSO RISK GETTING BANNED FROM THAT CHESS FEDERATION FOR STRIKING A WELL KNOWN MASTER , HE SIMPLY DID NOT WANT TO be BANNED FROM TOURNAMENTS AND COMPLAINT TO THE DIRECTOR TO KICK THE MASTER OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT ,BUT HE SAID HE COUL`NT HEAR WHAT WAS SAID .

i think short is a nice guy!
GoldeWC 4 years ago 3
Cheparinov apparently knew enough about the rule to know he could not be forfeited until he refused the arbiter's request. So, this was clearly a calculated insult. Unfortunately, the rules are what they are, and a player is not penalized for this behavior unless he disobey's the arbiter's order to comply.
Short won the game on the board, which was the greater victory.
centercounter 4 years ago 3
Shaking hands is only a nice polite thing to do before the game and should remain optional. Chess is already complicated enough, why would anybody be paying attention what could possibly be a "calculated insult"?
Nanosempai 4 years ago
You're right it's a complicated situation. On one hand it looks like Short is just looking for an excuse to put the Bulgarian camp in an even worse light, handshake or not, it doesn't seem like a big deal.
And then on the other hand I looked at the footage of the incident Short looked pretty frustrated by the way he was blatantly ignored. Just do the damn handshake, and have a friendlier match. I've tried myself sitting 4 hours in front of someone I was on bad terms with, it's not recommended.
GregJ22 4 years ago 3
If he is really that upset he did not get his handshake then he should be the one to forfeit.
Nanosempai 4 years ago
so you all think shorts a nice guy then?
amadeussalzburg 4 years ago
Have any of you seen the footage of the boxer who walked to the center of the ring after the opening bell for round one sounded, extended his glove to his opponent, and then proceeded to receive a devastating knockout punch to the head? Maybe Ivan saw that match. But, in chess, it works the other way 'round.

Of course they will - Topalov is No.1
BraikoT 4 years ago
Pls don't acuse Cheparinov. The only person responsable for this nonsense is Silvio Danailov. He ruined the reputation of Topalov and now wants to do the same with Cheparinov.

So, after that 2faced attitude bulgarians decided to ignore him as a person., but since Cheparinov had to play with him, he decided not to shake hand, only if he forced to do it by the refs, because how can you shake hand of someone who's moral and etique is like that and who betraded you in public.
End of story.
ceasarby 4 years ago
(Everybody would be happy to be a Topalov's lucky charm back there, 'cause he played damn good!). Year later Short was participating actively in campaign against Topalov and said in the interview that he noticed something wrong in Danailov's behavior already in San-Luis.

"I claimed a point" - is not a honorable and manly behavior. Such 2faced players are not deserving the recognition, also his game is not at the top right now and probably never be. First he dumped the shitloads of crap on Topalov and his manager and surprised?
ceasarby 4 years ago
Topa himself shaked hands with Kramnik,so what was Chepa's problem? He got what he deserved for his childish behaver and then he changed his mind when he was told the rule.Well, too late.
If he could get away with it, I would do that in every game to p*s off my opponents. Another nice Bulgarian promotion of chess
joobree75 4 years ago 5
I agree that it is poor etiquette, but no one is discussing why Cheparinov refused.

bumblebee1607 4 years ago
Cheparinov later said he would shake hands after talking to the arbiter. Then, it was *Short* refusing it and just taking the point. Somewhat hypocritical by Short, especially since the rules state that the rules state the game is forfeited if he still refuses after the arbiter asks him to.
DarkOneRRp 4 years ago
but the offence to short happend...it would be a shame if the arbiter has to control shake hands.
Chesselminster 4 years ago 5
Of course that's true.
DarkOneRRp 4 years ago
This is a good thing. Topalov-Cheparinov-Danailov are a pack of *ssholes. The sport will be better off without them. Hopefully they will never shake hands again.
p1q0 4 years ago
I hope Danailov, Topalov and all their cronies etc will get a lifetime ban from chess.
IkbenAlphastar 4 years ago
I'm pretty sure it wasn't Cheparinov's decision to refuse to shake hands. Probably -- like Nigel implied -- it was a collective decision and I'm thinking Danailov was the main influence.
ScorpioGuy17 4 years ago 6
rules exist to be applied. and why wouldn't cheparinov shake hands with nigel?
gremista 4 years ago 2
It looks like Gump had a fat lip on the video - presumably given to him - with justification - by Chep. Whilst recognising that chess should remain polite at all times I feel sure that there must have been a less draconian solution. Presumably Darrell Hair was the arbiter!
huntchess 4 years ago
Great action by Nigel. Even if in the end the arbiters will have to correct their decision, it is good to point out that this behaviour can't be tolerated. In every sport, the greeting comes first. Chess, once even considered "a gentlements sport" is not different from that.

unikum71 4 years ago 3
Really disgraceful attitude by Cheparinov. This Topalov-Cheparinov-Danailov group has been behaving in a way that is not good for chess. I hope FIDE does something about it at some point.
