Degus look like gerbils on steroids. They are completely herbivorous, they will NOT eat insects! They love to run on a wheel and are sweet smelling like a gerbil. They are low-odor and their cages don't stink. Great pet!!!!

@YouthComplex Yeah, I know they are caviomorphs. Based on my limited experience with two degus, I thought they don't eat insects. When we put crickets into gerbil and rat cages, they are promptly hunted down and eaten with glee, even if the little rodent had never encountered a bug before! However, the crickets in the degu cage had a fine life with food and water aplenty, and it's cage mates were completely uninterested in them. Everything I have read states they are obligate herbivores.

degus are classed as rodents but they're behaviour is much more like a labomorphs (rabbit) they come from the chilean andes and are in my opinion having 4 rabbits a guinea pig 2 lizards (laziest things on earth) and soon to be 5 degus are the best pets in the world

I have 3 degus and they make that sound constantly. It get's a bit more shrill when they are competing for treats. XD

Remember, anyone who gets degus you should never have just one. They are very social. AND they are very susceptible to diabetes so you can't feed them the same diet as a lot of other rodents.

Otherwise they are wonderful. Mine are 5 years old and still going strong. :)
