Hello, I;m debating about getting one of these trucks, Same year, engine and everything, but I'm concerned about power. Wikipedia lists this truck as having only 140hp, which seems quite low for a pick-up. My primary use for the truck would be everyday driving, and occasional off roading/4x4ing. Would you reccomend this truck for those, or is it a little under-powered?
@XxWINxX94 I don't think they were rated quite that low but 80s and 90s pick ups had very low hp numbers, crappy economy and low compression ratios.
With a cam swap, some headers, and a 4 barrel swap you could live it with it as a daily driver.
I would say that it is under powered but so is anything from that era. It's basically the same 318 Dodge had been making since 66? So they do have some potential if you rebuild them with some good parts.
@starchief59 From my understanding the engine is the same 318, they didn't change that until like 1992 when the whole truck changed. However, emissions control laws/acts were supposed to play a huge role in the under-poweredness of these trucks. Thanks for your response.
i have an 86 w150 with a 360 ci and 600 cfm holley 4 barel carb and i drive it every day on road and off road and its got all the power in the world its a little slow on passing on the highway in 3rd but drop it to 2nd and stop it your past them like nothing all round its an awsome vehicle
@starchief59 yeah I know. I'm tempted to for the power and I want a louder engine. But my slant doesn't smoke or burn oil. It starts first try everytime. And it's a pretty solid engine. Runs great. Just has no power. Plus I get 18mpg city! But once I have money I'll think about it. But I sure as hell ain't gonna get rid of the slant if I swap it out!
@starchief59 yeah money is what kept me from think it out any further. I'm just gonna try and build up my slant a little. It's hard to find parts for it though. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it. You should make another video when your done.
@Basebal4life92 IT would definitely be sweet. I'm just not sure if I want to spend that much time and money on it. I've still got my '59 Pontiac sitting in the drive way and a list of stuff I need on my 62. The Dodge isn't at the top of my list
The Dodge will need that 318 built here pretty soon. Looks like it might be my first engine build
@starchief59 yeah its a good tranny. Loved that granny low when i was pulling my dads trailer. But Low gears cant make up for the lack of power from a slant six. lol
you still got ur smog pump? i ripped mine off my 85' breaths like a king now i went from 97 horsepower being choked to death by the 2 barrel and the smog to 309
@starchief59 i have a 1988 ram. 360 v8, automatic, 4x4, short bed. its in the works right now. just needs some body work and a paint job because of some rust. I dont have much hope for a wax job right now, but soon.. lol
@starchief59 hell ya nothin beats the old dodge 4 spds...i got a 79 macho power wagon with a 318 4 spd and 12.5 " 33s....works mint toughest truck ever haha
That speedometer probloem is common in these old dodge rams i have the problem with my 2wd dodge ram d250 with a 318 but im fixing it now. Looks like fun i do the same thing up here on the farm.
The Power Rams (formerly known was Power Wagons) were all 4x4. I think all 4x4 Rams are "Power Rams" and all 57-82? 4x4 Dodge pick ups are "Power Wagons"
i see theres a guy wanting to trade me my lumina for a power ram 1989 but i want it to have a 360 only. no small blocks i dont know if the power ram only came with a 360 or what... a nice truck you have BTW are those very durable? the reason i ask is because with my car every time i even do so much as jump a median or ease on a curb it needs an alignment badly my friend had a c10 and it held up untill the brakes went out. im not even going to THINK about a ford so im interested in a dodge.
360s are small blocks also. There were no big blocks in 89. 360s and 318s are pretty much identical. I had a 90 with a 318 and my best friend had an 89 with a 318. My 86 is a 318, my 77 is a 318 and my 74 was a 360. The only motors you could get would be a slant 6, 318 or 360 or an 89.
Power Rams are very durable. You can't really beat their drivetrains, especially if it's a 3/4 or 1 ton. I would trade a lumina in a heartbeat for a Power Ram. There is no comparison between a lumina and a Ram
The suspension is tough, but you won't be taking any sharp turns at 50 mph. You also won't be doing any 0-60 in 7 seconds. No offense but I highly doubt your lumina does 0-60 in under 10 seconds.
i strait piped it cold air intake. every filtration element has been upgraded or bypassed
large injectors and synthetic oil.
as well as weight reduction. if i dont use it while driving the car doesnt have it.
no back seats spare tire set A/C or wiper fluid resivour and battery has been moved to under the passenger seat. all that gives me more fuel economy and better performance.
but im willing to give that up for a sturdy American truck.
Make sure they don't sell it! They're great trucks. I used to have a '74 Power Wagon and now I have my '86 and a '76 Power Wagon. They're as durable as can be.

@Basebal4life92 Yeah those slants don't make too much power but they will last for just about ever

Basebal4life92 11 months ago
@Basebal4life92 I'll put some new videos of it up soon. It still runs great just smokes a little. I'll do some slight hill climbs with it
Swap in a 318. Cheap and easy swap
starchief59 11 months ago
@starchief59 That'd be a pretty sweet swap. I thought about doin that in mine.

nice i got the np 435 too. Wish mine was 4x4. i gotta slant six in mine.
Basebal4life92 11 months ago
@Basebal4life92 The 435 is on it's way out though. No 3rd gear, no synchros in 4th, barely any synchro left in 2nd but she's still going
That 318 is gunna need a rebuild soon too. She'll smoke if she idles too long

96wis 2 years ago
I have a '76 Power Wagon and I don't really need 2 4x4 dodges. I hate to sell it but I could use the money to put into one of my other cars
starchief59 2 years ago
ok u gonna put a lift on your truck
96wis 2 years ago
Na, I like the height it is now. I'm actually trying to sell it
starchief59 2 years ago

haha probably not. It's probably just the cable
LoneStarCreekRanch 2 years ago
whats up with that speedometer
96wis 2 years ago
No idea. Every old dodge I have ever had has had a broken speedometer.

I would give that up in a heartbeat for an old Dodge

hmmm..i c my worry is mainly in the suspension
im not going to be pulling anything but i will be driving through tough terrain.
well the lumina can handle sharp turns at over 50 and do 0-60 in under 7 seconds
but theres no substitute for durability.
kreigsmann 2 years ago

it has well over 260hp dynod
and if and when i finally get the WOT tech chip it will have far more.
kreigsmann 2 years ago
How did you get 260 hp out of a Lumina?
starchief59 2 years ago
it originally had 210 or 0-60 in 8s
i strait piped it cold air intake. every filtration element has been upgraded or bypassed
large injectors and synthetic oil.
