This is one of the most bittersweet scenes I have ever heard. It just makes me laugh and cry. To hear what he's saying and to see his son in the center of the group---- It's all for him.
Rarely i'm proud to be Italian... But with this movie, i am! And luckly the movie is not dubbed, the voice of Roberto and the way he speak are always hilarious!!

I say this one time. you are here transported ... to work. who doesn't listen get punished by the roof(I think) and get hit in the back. you'll have the honor to work for the great germany. 3 things you'll not forget: 1. ? 2. follow every command without questions 3. if you ignore this, you'll be killed is that clear? and then I can't understand it for a while one more thing(strawberry) when you hear a wistle, you have to go immediately to the oven! that's not everything but you get the picture.
@MichaelPolios 2. Follow every command without question. 3. Any attempt to revolt will be punished by hanging. Is that clear?! You should be happy to be able to work here. Nothing will happen to those who follow the rules. Obedience is everything. One more thing. With this whistle, everyone out into the courtyard, but quickly. (as in "quickly, or else") Standing in two rows. Silent. Every morning. (No idea what that grunt means)
aw man,why Guido had to die at the end...i cried out loud and felt sorry fot the kid.The movie is EPIC i like it very much, especially like how 'the bad guys' get fooled cuz i haate them so much, they done really bad things at these concentration camps, bastards deserved it !
@wolfmyth007 There's only one reason why you have been transported to this camp. to work! any attempt of sabotage will be punished immediately with death penalty The executions will take place at the courtyard by shots in the back. you have the honour to work for our great german fatherland and participate in the construction of the greater german empire you should never forget 3 basic rules 1. don't try to flee! 2. follow every command without asking!
@pkrishnametal 3. Any attempt of a rebellion will be punished by hanging! Is that clear! you should be happy to work here. Nothing will happen to you as long you obey the commands. obedience is everything! and another thing at this whistle- everyone into the courtyard, fast! muster in two rows silence! every morning with appeal one more thing... you will work over there and you will recognize the dimensions of this camp easily
@pkrishnametal Thank you, I've always wanted to know what the Nazis were saying in this part. Now I know it but I can't help feeling so much rage. Animals are better than people with this ideas.
@BlazeKnight729 Right after the Nazis leave, Guido tells everyone to ask the guy he was talking to before if they have any questions. So, no, their chances were not ruined.
@BlazeKnight729 t right after the Nazis leave, tells the people in the camp to ask the guy he was talking to at the beginning if they have any questions. So, no, their chances were not ruined.
You know what, I don't care if you think the people who disliked this are traitors. This movie is a complete insult to those who had to suffer throughout the Holocaust, and thanks to Guido making a complete ass of himself here, no one knows the real rules that they should abide by in order to survive. He may have done this to keep his son happy, but he completely ruined everyone else's chances at survival here.
@BlazeKnight729 WOW! so sad you miss the idea of this movie, the beauty of it , thanks to this movie I have un understanding that dose who died in the hands of Nazis where humans, and let me tell you I have watch every single movie about the Holocaust and even do I felt sorrow and hate against the Nazis this is the only one who makes me felt Love , Hope and admiration for the Jews and any other race that has suffer racism. Love to you. Adriana
@adrianaveliz While I get that there was a message behind this movie, I feel that it was either poorly told or took a back seat to Guido's attempt to save himself and his son. I do appreciate your perspective that it taught the positives rather than the negatives, but I simply feel that this was a rather sensitive subject to work with.
I am afraid those people that does't like this film are not just idiots but they haven't got a heart! I am afraid in this sad world, there are a lot of those people around!
F.. ing Germans!!! I live in a town with the former Nazi camp (now it is a museum), and everytime I pass the camp, it gives me creeps, although it is almost 70 years now, from the genocide of my people and other nations. These barracks, towers, barbed wire, and a big pile of ashes and rests of bones under the big dome- memorial. I can't understand how it was possible.
More than comedy, more than survival, more than war...This movie is about love. Simple. pure, undying love and what love enables you to do that hate never can.
I had to watch this in my Italian class last year. Even though i already saw the movie. But it was good to see it again. Although it's on a sad topic that happened in history.
just watched this 2nite on my campus...almost every girl cried at the end...it was good and i like how he makes his son more "comfortable" and listen in the camp...was a very good movie :)
As an italian i am able to understand everything and it is clear to me that this movie is epic. With just reading the english subtitles you miss so much of the emotion and the power of the movie.. Benigni makes this a Masterclass! Brings me to tears every time. :')
The translations provided in the comments are mostly good, the one in the description looks like it's been googletranslated. Would be a good idea for bobtcat to edit it and reward people's good efforts!
@chepallemac --> you know, there are several people that dislike this movie, included also some important Jewish people, Publishers, writers. I've seen this movie and I feel very sad, some others cryes, other was laugh. I thing this is a progression of history, how to elaborate a disaster like shoah.
@chepallemac The dislikers got stomach ache for eating too many lollypops, got caught while playing hide and seek, and had to wear a sign 'jackass' on their back....
@BR00KEWUZHEREx3 It is touching indeed, in every sense! I have watched many Holocaust films, but this is an ultimate masterpiece! While the rest leaves you in a depressing mood, this, as sad as it is, it shows you how "life can still be beautiful"!
Actually does anyone know what the German soldier is actually saying? Would be great to know considering there is no translation to what he is saying. It is such a funny scene, it is my favorite part, love the expression on the little kids face, priceless
I saw this movie when I was still but a child, and when I was in the theater I saw my father crying (something I never saw him do)... I'm now 22 and rewatching this movie, and I can finally understand why a father would cry to this movie.
Truly a sad story of a father's undying love for his son.
This was such a hilariois scene from a very wonderful and touching movie. One of the few movies that made me howl with laughter yet weep with tears, Brilliant.
I love how he did that just to keep his son from understanding the horrible things that were going on in that camp. Also very funny. In a way, he made it a little better for all of them in there xD
Roberto Benigni an artist who takes you into the film and into that beautiful life on screen and takes u through every emotion along the way! One of the most Amazing films ever!!!!!
This movie is real masterpiece of cinematography. I've never seen a movie with such a balance of hysterical comedy and serious drama. Roberto Benigni was brilliant. Nicoletta Braschi was impressive too. The movie won 3 Oscars I would give it more. Life is Beautiful is one of my all time favorite War movies - along with Escape from Sobibor (1987), Schindler's List (1993), Savior (1998), Enemy at the Gates (2001), The Pianist (2002) and Black Book (2006).
@supersnowboarding1 - Yeah, actually I like the original Italian version better. But I just want to show the English version to my friends. Are there any versions that directly translates the German dialogues too?
Can somebody please send me the things that the nazi says in german? I need the original words, not the translation, I'm doing a play about this movie and we need to know what they say...
this scene its so funny, but so beautiful and full of love...! what a great movie Jees, im from Honduas and i love this movie, its my favorite already and Roberto Beningi, GRANDE ROBERTO..!!! what an actor...!!! uufff.!!! papa papaa..!!!! u rock roberto...!!! la vida es bella no nos perdamos!!!!
I'm from Germany and like to translate what the German Soldier says:
Part Two:
" Follow each command without asking! Any try to escape is punished by death by hanging! IS THAT CLEAR? You should be happy to be allowed to work here. There is no danger for those who follow the rules. One more thing! When I whistle you have to go all out on the yard! And quickly! ine up in two rows, silent, everyone's morning roll call. Back there you'll work. You'll easily understand the dimensions of the camp."

there are three basic rules you should keep in mind at all times:
first of all : don t try to escape
secondly : obey every order without questioning
finally. every act of insurgency will be punished by hanging.
are we clear ?
you should be glad to be allwoed to work here. nobody who abides by the rules will be harmed.
obedience is everything
and one more thing:
at the sound of the whistle everybody assembles on the courtyard immediately

@BR00KEWUZHEREx3 It is touching indeed, in every sense! I have watched many Holocaust films, but this is an ultimate masterpiece! While the rest leaves you in a depressing mood, this, as sad as it is, it shows you how "life can still be beautiful"!

soo adorable. talk about the best dad ever...only a dad could make the holocaust a game!

Actually does anyone know what the German soldier is actually saying? Would be great to know considering there is no translation to what he is saying. It is such a funny scene, it is my favorite part, love the expression on the little kids face, priceless

@1502melina My english is terrible, this is a translation of the beginning…
Everybody listen, I’m telling this only once = The game starts now: whoever is here is here, whoever is not is not
You have been sent to this Lager (?) for only one reason = the first one to get a 1000 points wins. The prize is a tank
Work! = Lucky him
When I lived in Italy I watched this film with my italian friends (I’m german) they also asked me everything. It was funny :)

I saw this movie when I was still but a child, and when I was in the theater I saw my father crying (something I never saw him do)... I'm now 22 and rewatching this movie, and I can finally understand why a father would cry to this movie.
Truly a sad story of a father's undying love for his son.

I love how he did that just to keep his son from understanding the horrible things that were going on in that camp. Also very funny. In a way, he made it a little better for all of them in there xD
Wolfiewolfwolf 7 months ago
Yeah, those rules he came up with are probably right anyway.

This is so sad... And at the same time, you know he is ready to do everything he can to keep his son out of this... This is such a beautiful scene.

Thank you but I asked for the exact words, in GERMAN...
