  • show off! Nice job bro!

  • I always thot this was denny diaz??'

  • Damn this is really great .

  • Elliot Randall the first solo, Jeff Baxter the 2nd one.

  • NICE SG !!!!

  • Hey Tom, great lesson, i have this dvd, and i'll be posting a video of myself playing this tune soon! Hope i can do it some justice and make you proud! Cheers!

  • Thanks for posting this- very helpful, and very awesome.

  • SKUNK!

  • Elliot Randall will be proud..yes, very proud!!!

  • the opening solo, i can play very very very good, its the second solo that kicks my ass...

  • Oh My Gawd! I wanna be able to play like this so b-a-a-d! Maybe I'll never get there, but it's a star worth shooting for. I really envy you guys that can do this sh_t! By all means, keep rockin!

  • Awesome. Inspiring. Motivational. Thanks!

  • I've been playing this song for 35 years and you've got it down. Elliott would be proud.

  • it's exactly spot on the same in the original...wow..

  • Not so sure you'd call Elliot little known ;-) He's played with the likes of Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Peter Frampton and many many others. I had the pleasure of seeing Elliot with Skunk play this back in the mid eighties, when they toured a bag full of Steely Dan classics around Australia with an amazing array of mostly Aussie session musicians. Both Skunk and Elliot were stunningly good but Elliot's solos on this number were stand out.

  • Some of Skunk's best lead work. I finally learned this song and you definitely smoothed out some kinks. Thanks man awesome vid.

  • @MusicManDan13: I learned recently that the guitar player on this song was actually played by Elliott Randall, a little know session player.

  • @vinnytfunk Wow! Duh! No one would have ever known!

  • @vinnytfunk Thanks dude. I didn't know that.

  • @vinnytfunk

I actually know Elliott! He's a very good friend of mine. He's the musical director of mine band :)

  • by far ... the best one out there. spot on ... thank you!

  • i play an SG too...even though mine's an SG special. but it inspires me to try and learn this song

  • you rock!!!

  • Skunk and Walter never nailed this like that. Only Elliott Randall, and you.

  • How many takes??

  • You've got to be bloody good to play that well!

  • That blasted angle at 0:30 .... I can't tell which fingers are up or down...

  • depressing he is so good lol !

  • I think you are ready to quit your day job and go on the road.

  • Great cover man!

  • This is absolutely awesome. Great dexterity and great video. Thanks so much!

  • That double-vision to show the overdub works really well.

  • brilliant! It's really a thing of beauty. it is.

But, what is sad is seeing Steely Dan not even close to playing the lead 'sudio accurate' live on stage.

  • geesh that tone drove me nuts, like an ice pick in the eye.

  • @nikgottheblues Elliott recorded it through a bass amp on the CD lol

  • thanks so much for the double guitar harmony/split screen.... really helped me

figure out the solos....I knew it was some where in the major thingy but couldn't always disect it....thanks again.

  • are you Larry Charlton?

  • Damn. Perfect sound too

  • OMFG that was incredible !!

  • Wow !!

  • hands down, simply the best how to guitar videos on youtube!!

  • Just amazing.

  • Truly Outstanding !!! keep it up - Knobby

  • whats up wit ta skipppy skip?

  • very nice

  • Thanks dude! I always wanted to learn this! Very Cool!!!

  • some things in life are just so cool.

    this is one of them

  • Sweet!!!!!

  • that's a sweet sounding guitar. I'll tell you that right now.

  • very cool. so close to perfect. I loved it. all the notes were there. you play awesome.

  • Damn!!! Just plain Damn!!!!

  • Has to be one of the top ten guitar solos of all time. It is just friggin' breathtaking. And no one can name the guy that does it.

  • @riverdale999 Eliott randall

  • Elliott Randall

  • Elliott Randall

  • which scale is that played in?

  • whats with the KRAMER guitar strap ? ?

  • Man that is great! I favor SG"s too.I put 57' classics in and it's awesome. May I ask what kind of overdrive are you using??

  • The real Guitar Heroes are those guys who played on the first four Steely Dan albums. Considering the nice job you've done here, you already know that. "My Old School" is another guitar workout that never gets old.

  • Great job! That was great! Thanks!

  • your fking brain cant even move that fast, so sit down

  • um, i am sitting down... ass.

  • to be able to play this solo as well as this guy does is spectacular the only thing boring & repetitive is people who have nothing better to do than put down others w/ obvious talent that they prob will never possess cause they think its cool to do so.. i suppose you can do better right moron..

  • @MOSKII58 boring and repetitive

  • @Charbok12 you are the only thing here that is boring & repetitive & a moron to boot

  • @MOSKII58 is that all you got shitbreath?

  • @Charbok12 oh we are getting our feelings hurt now lol listen Charboy go home and learn your modes then you can earn the right to mock others playing

    who obviously outshine you.

  • Oooh, your are so damn good

  • Puts a big smile on my face whenever I hear 0:30 - 0:58.

  • Dude, that was excellent!!!!! Is there any chance you could tell me how you got the sound? Almost exactly like the real song, been trying to figure it out... thanks =D keep rocking \m/

  • Err... Easy!

  • Jimmy Page is still learning this one.

  • I would say steely Dan is one of the best study bands of all time..

Were they jazz influenced? what other band plays 7ths 9ths and blends scales like them?

Not just your avearge Three bar blues and patonic scales here ya know?

  • Skunk Baxter is responsible for that lead.

  • nope that's Elliot Randall..

  • Hendrix, Page, Beck.

  • Elliot Randall is the man.

  • he should play on stage

  • yeah the stage out of town

  • A mixolydian, you play the D Major scale and it fits perfectly over this prog.

  • D Major scale with the C Major scale.

So it's the C/D Major Scale...

Or the A/B Minor Scale... Same thing!

    So the notes are A, B, C, D, E, F#, G in this scale.

  • You can also fit the C# in that scale, it works fine with the song...

So it's the C/D Major Scale with a C# note...

So, now the notes you can play (improv on the song) are A, B, C, C#, D, E, F#, and G.

    Hope I'm not an annoyance!

  • i love the sound of the that intro

  • Comment removed

  • really really good.

  • Makonu2....this song has always blown me away with THAT guitar intro and solo later on.....yes, it's an awesome tune~

  • Sweet! Curious to know your signal path after it leaves the SG.

  • ...Wow....great accuracy....

  • just watched loads of these tonite and this is THE best...well done guitar man

  • Man you make it look easy

  • Nice job!

  • wished i could do this like you can, i would laugh everyday, phil

  • cool , sounds great and inspires me to have a go on my les paul

(i am a loud but mediocre guitariste)

  • Sometimes I get so caught up in the groove of this song that I completely missed how much guitar work goes into it. Excellent playing!

  • excellent

  • FANTASTIC!!!!! From hobertcecil.

  • nice

  • Incredible. Back off the dist. a bit, bro. Still incredible.

  • Dude, I don't know what to say. Thanks for the posts, I know they'll help me learn some of the solos much faster. You rock Bro.

    Byron

  • Just like Jeff "Skunk" Baxter

  • You mean Elliot Randall.

Jimmy Page said that Randall's guitar solo on RITY is his favorite of all time.

  • Total pro...brilliant, as are all your vids!

  • VERY COOL !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good Job Man

  • Comment removed

  • DAM!!!!!!!! dude......RESPECT!!!!!!

  • what is this drive? Marshall drive?

  • tough song and a really nice job

  • What kind of guitar is this?

  • It's a Gibson SG Standard.

The binding, the trapezoidal fretboard inlay, headstock inlay, and the nickel-plated pickup covers are the clues.

I NEED (want) to add this to my current collection of 17 guitars. I have GAS-guitar acquisistion syndrome.

    :P

  • Excellent job, dude, on a very intricate song and solo... You nailed it with such precision... Loved it! Always wanted to play this song since I heard the first few intro notes, but when I first tried as a young teen, didn't get very far, so perhaps now I can retry. I never get tired of this song. Thanks for the post and the lesson. Hey, would it be possible to add the chords during the verses sometime, if you can? Would greatly appreciate it! Thanks and Rock on! :)

  • Who said this guy can't play is an idiot.

  • Where's your video apple? I'd love to see it. Always a critic out there. I enjoyed it myself and I love the cars vids you have. Keep em coming and great job.

  • @doubleapple: I don´t think thats fair judging but your personal opinion. I think he does a very good and clean job on that SD stuff.Of course it is not easy to play it like the original+add you own style or feel and perhaps that also had not been his intention in the first place. Whatever lineup SD presented on stage later I must declare that in my opinion i haven´t heard any decent intro and solo live from any guitarist with them. Best was the original studio version. But only mho.

  • Looks like you learned all the notes , but you have no feel. No flavor at all, I would hold off from teaching guitar for a few years. You play like I did when I was 2 years in, nothing to brag about. Sorry, I'm gonna have to give 1 thumb up for good musical taste and learning the solo, and 1 thumb down for you playing and lack of technique.

  • cowbell?

  • pretty good.

  • bang on

  • Wow--you definitely channeled Elliott Randall! Great execution playing one of the best-written guitar solos of all time, IMHO.

  • AWESOME!

  • the best part was from 0:00 to 2:21

  • lol yeah

  • Mega respect, amazing playing. Straight to my faves, thanks for posting, Billy ;)

  • My Bad....You're right Mr. Easton did play that one.

  • all of it is fantastic. But 1:57-2:00?

    OUTRAGEOUSSSSSSSS

  • totally

  • Skunk Baxter would be VERY proud!

  • Great playing!! NICE ! I couldn't help but notice you are playing a SG with a KRAMER strap on !! I have a 20 something year old Kramer Focus 3000. Love it...

  • Good work and teaching ,I can see exactly how to cover it

  • You the best cover-lead player I have ever seen! Your tone and execution are always perfect! I have purchased a few of the DVD's they are worth every penny!

  • very cool indeed.....

  • This Dude Rocks..I watched a few of your vids and I hope you don't stop..Thanks so much...

  • I wanna quit my job, and play like you. I am 57. It would probably take 20 years.

    Wow, what an incredible talent.

    Thanks

  • recorded on a 63 strat with a Gibson Hummer pick up mounted near neck...best of both worlds !!!

  • Awesome job. What did you use to get the sound? I'm going to be ordering your lesson and want the same sound you have. Thanks.

  • Absolutely incredable!! How did you get that sound?

  • I wish I could play like that!!!!!!!

  • I liked it when you grew two left hands. How'd you do that?

  • playing multiple guitar parts and editing the videos together..

  • ...so he didn't really grow two left hands? How disappointing! He really had me going there for a while!

  • he has two pairs of buttocks. If you look closely you can see.

  • it's what they put in the water. My cousin has two left feet.

  • o thats a fuckin SG dude, best damn guitar in the world

  • SG's are OK I had one before but my American Strat Delux is way better

  • very coolio

  • wtf! do you just figure this stuff out from listening to it? how many times!!!? lol that HAS to be very painstaking to get it so perfect because it is DEAD on. well anyway Does it help to know all the different scales and stuff?

  • I imagine it would..

  • and I imagine all the people. You may say Im a dreamer, but Im not the only one. jk :)

  • Outstanding!!!

  • amazingg.

  • if i could do this that's all id...do

  • man how did u get that tone?

  • i think its his humbuckers but i'd like to know how much that sg was... if it is an sg that is...

  • it is.

  • oooh!!! this is good you could fill in anytime..

  • Thats amazing mate! A good job on an awesome song. I'm learning how to play this song at the mo. much appreciated!

  • Your rock! Great job!!! One of my fave guitar parts of all time. Now I will learn this one as well...all thanks to you! THANK YOU!!!

  • where did you get the backing track?

  • Dude!! Right in step with Elliot!

  • Absolutly fantastic, what did you use to video and edit?

  • Absolutely freakin brilliant man! This one has always been one of my favourite Dan solos! And you play it so well! Excellent tone! Also!!! I wish I was able to play like you man!

  • Just goddamn awesome & clean

  • that was perfect

  • I agree with everyone else, very nice job... coming from (I like to think) a reasonably good guitar player and a long time Steely Dan fan.

  • good stuff;)

  • Lovely job - beautiful playing, gorgeous sound, you rock dude.

  • The split screen harmonizing is genius! I laughed out loud in disbelief and admiration when it hit me. A W E S O M E !
