I went into seeing this film just to watch Jennifer Connelly, because I think she is one of the hottest actresses out there. It's about alienation, loneliness and despair, and how, given the right circumstances, even a couple of bright people who could have it all can succumb to the shit that's lurking almost everywhere, taking with them the remnants of family and friends they've left behind. Brilliant and depressing at the same time.

She's forced to whore herself out to get money for her and her boyfriends drugs... but it's so true you could never understand till you live through that.. but you do understand it in a way by seeing the whole movie... great great but very depressing film

Uh, depends on what you mean by famous. In the general sense, I wouldn't say it's famous, more so than a widely proclaimed film for the cast and the themes.

OmegaOwA answered, but I wanted to expand that Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) or the older woman in the clips was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for her role. Not sure if that makes it famous, though.
It's a cult film, not really main stream, perhaps most well known for a particular scene near the end of the film.
