I only really remember them on Thames, so I guess this must be late 70s? Wasn't the ending with Eric walking off behind the stahge wearing a flat cap and mac (and suitcase?) thinking that the show had finished? The joke was Ernie wanted him off the stage so he could do a solo song and dance. I didn't like the show much but then I was quite young and preferred Kenny Everett on a Monday at 7pm.
you are getting confused with the BBC shows - they were far superior at the BBC. They couldnt take the writers with them when the defected to THAMES and it really shows.
