@fender1000100 i've got 2 dx7s and they're alright, but you can't match analog stuff like the jp-8. the jp-8 blows any digital synth out of the water.
My advice to all who are wise enough not to be taken in by the myth and hype of the Jupiter 8. Is this. If you are a Roland devotee. Get the Roland JX8P. Yes I know it doesn't sound as cool as a Jupiter 8. But its just as good sonically. And a helluva lot cheaper.
Better still get a Yamaha DX7S--IID--IIFD. They will blow a jupiter 8 away for bass. And pads, special effects. And can produce gorgeous string pads too. Because they have the poly unison mode.
I wouldnt pay 500 for a Jupiter 8. A DX7s will blow it out of the water for a fraction of the price and no worries about replacing parts. These old analogue dinosaurs are way overrated.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the DX7 is quite an old analogue dinosaur as well. If you wouldn't pay $500 for a Jupiter 8, then you clearly don't love or understand analog synths.
@ovomusic DX7 is an old DIGITAL dinosaur. It uses FM synthesis to shape sounds (and is also a nightmare to program). I do agree though, fender1000100 doesn't appear to understand or recognise the appeal of analogue synths. Saying that, J8 prices are way over the top these days sadly, priced out of reach of a lot of people who could make good use of them.
Sweden is a small country but the old JP8s goes like candy for 6000 USD...2 sold in two months. People still have too much money as it seems or they lost their mind. I would understand if they would make better music than Jarre but it's just insane! I like this synth but maybe it's not worth the hysterical price. It reminds me of the Tulip Mania in Holland (around 1635) when people paid 10 years of income for a tulip onion...until everything collapsed. LOL Thank Lord for the samplers!
I've got one in pristine condition. Has been siting in it's flight case for over 19 years. Back in the day when I first bought it, I left it on stage overnight and the cleaners knocked it over onto the floor. Grrr made me so mad. It's been sitting in it's flight case ever since. I will be taking it in for repairs this week. A keyboard technician told me just today that they retail for $6500.00 Australian. Worth every dollar to get it fixed. It's a remarkable synth.
There's a Jupiter 8 on sale in Ebay (October 17th 2011). "2009pinkfloyd" is trying to sell 1 that he states is in "MINT CONDITION". The price starts at $7,700.00, (or buy it now for $8,500.00) There's also an $850.00 shipping charge attached to it.
I don't know, but I wouldn't pay more than $2,500.00 for one of these even if I had the money to buy one. I'd pay $2,000.00 at the drop of a hat (considering that these are 30 years old and most people don't have them anymore), but $3,000.00+...?
@nudist1033 As a previous owner of several JP8's I can hand on heart say they are an amazing + beautiful synth. Having said that, I would never pay more than £3000.00 for one. The true value is nearer £2000.00 if Im honest. The main issue with these is that there are very few people (globally) who are truly competent in keeping them running. From a maintenance point of view, Prophet 5's are much better. There's atleast 5x as many floating around and the parts are *much* easier to source.
hey wasnt this the same synthesizer that the human league used to compose their music and make the music especially off the DARE album? man i love this synth, it was a popular 80's synth, even kajagoogoo used this synth!
@mukaikof The Jupiter 4, not 8, was used on the Human League's DARE album. According to Wikipidea (and other sources): The following studio equipment was used in the recording of the album:[6] Casio M10 Casio VL-1 Korg 770 Korg Delta Linn LM-1 Roland Jupiter-4 Roland MC-8 Roland System 700 Yamaha CS-15
What's weird is that, 13 years prior to this synthesizer's introduction, an episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series" entitled "Bread and Circuses" included a line about a vehicle called the Jupiter 8 (complete with a fake magazine ad) that was used by the human inhabitants of planet FGC 892 IV, who were descended from a group of Romans transplanted to the planet in the Roman Republic era by a non-corporeal species called the Preservers and who now possessed 21st-century-level technology.
How much is the solar powered model and will clouds affect the cv ohms, persay polyphony or too much cords? or is it mono and wont be an issue? pordan my enlgish
Hey you said you go this for $320 at a garage sale a little while back? By little while do you mean 1991? I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. :) It's worth about 8-12,000 dollars.
To all the Noobs out there this synth is now worth more than Motifs, Fantoms, Oasys, ect. This are real phat synth sounds and not the plastic synthetic sounds from patches of today. They should go back to basics.
Original intention of Roland Jupiter 8 was to sound realistic acoustic using analog technology. But it FAILED because analog did not sound realistic acoustic. Thats why it SUCCEEDED because Roland's original intent did not work. Same story with TB-303.. Now that Roland's intention for realistic acoustic has SUCCEEDED with new Jupiter 80, they have FAILED because people interested in synthesizers are looking for NON-realistic electronic sounds. Roland instruments succeed when the intention fails!
@pixusbubblejet That is a good point, just as most awesome music motifs, sounds and so on are made up by accident. I get kinda sad knowing how awesome Roland once where and why they are only putting out this cheap digital/virtual analouge crap when people actually want real analouge. I mean who are they trying to fool, that's why I like DSI, doing new synths, also moog of course. Why Roland is not in on this game I don't understand since they actually did make some of the fattest shit ever.
@M3sslah. We shouldn't be angry at Roland, because their "success" had nothing to do with their original intentions. 1980s Roland engineers were actually diasappointed in their own creation of TB303 & TR808 because it sounded UNrealistic. Ironically thats why it succeeded to the undergound DJs who created House & Techno. As far as Roland is concerned they are simply following their philosophy of acoustic realism. Phat-analog has never been their goal, but luckily for us sometimes they "fail" ;)
@pixusbubblejet Same holds true with their piano samples. Ugh. They intend to have realistic acoustic piano sounds on their sampler workstations and digital pianos, but they sound so much like crappy digital modeling that I'll never buy a Roland workstation. But the Jupiter 8 was absolutely incredible.
@pixusbubblejet ..you nailed that one on the head! It really blows my mind that Roland cannot reproduce this Jupiter 8. It tells me that the folks running Roland today are highly incompetent. Now they create synths like the Gaia and the ax9 controller? Please people!
It would have been cruel and possibly dangerous to tell "young dude" the real value, even after locking it in the trunk. Like the lady said in Fifth of July: "Never tell people they aren't what they think they are. What's the profit?"
Call me old-fashioned, but the JP8 absolutely p1sses all over the new Jupiter 80..What the hell were Roland thinking of? Do they actually follow the 2nd hand vintage analog synth market or listen to musician's advice? Obviously not with the new Jupiter 80 "offering". Lovely demo, thanks for posting.
Tell me if the new piece of garbage Jupiter 80 can replicate this amazingly powerful analog intro, the power and the glory at its maximum expression. Long Live the Real Jupiter 8.
Such a majestic old machine. As an aspiring musician and a seasoned electronic tech I would love to take it out for a test drive and a cursory look under the hood. Sounds like it's hitting on all 8 to me.
I found mine at a Salvation Army in Troy NY. $75.00 was the price. The salesperson thought it was a toy because of the multi colored buttons. It was partially buried under plush toys and little girls clothing ! Whats crazier is the salesperson said "Oh thats a broken kids piano" because he said it didn't sound right when he pluged headphones into it. I bought immediately and took it home. It worked and has worked fine for 2 years and is in excellent shape. I see them now going for 7g's on Ebay
Just logging in. I owned one around 1986 or so. Cost me two grand. Didi a lot with it, but then Midi came along, and the Ensoniq ESQ 1, and I sold the thing to get some dough. Made a lot of tapes with it, though, and a really nutso recording the day before I sold it, playing all kinds of voices. I could do a great copy of the music from The Day The Earth Stood Still with it. Bacon frying was a classic sound. By the way, the manual was around 12 pages. Awesome.

What a fantastic looking and sounding analogue polysynth. Roland don't make them like this anymore. Try as they might to recreate the halcyon days with remakes of the SH series and spurious name dropping of the Juno brand.
Would love to own one of these monsters but sadly don't have the ridiculous amount of money they command these days.
Do a Google for "arturia jupiter 8v sound on sound" for a great review of the plug-in version of this synth. The author has the real thing next to him, so he provides some detailed, intelligent comparisons of the two synths. If you're like me, you can't afford the real thing so this plugin sounds like a very worthy compromise! He speaks remarkably highly of it.
I bought this synth not long ago for only $320 at a garage sale. The young dude who sold it to me told me that he was a heavy metal guitarist, not a "piano" player. Kids today, they have no idea.
@DIGITALSCREAMS have you ever had the chance to compare it to the JP-8000? in terms of sound depth/warmth, is it an assassination? or the jp8000 comes close enough?...
@66612345678 at that price its a steal I saw the jupiter 8 at 7,500$ US on Ebay this morning your very lucky you know those beast are expensive as hell but THE SOUND IS AWESOME analogue synthesiser all the way
@66612345678 .... Huh!? Are you kidding!? $320!!!!! Gonna cut out my heart, deepfry it and eat it!!! If that dude at any time took a look at Ebay now and then ... Is he still alive or has he jumped off from some high place?
@66612345678 I hate you...I don't know you but I really hate you LOL.
I had the same luck finding a fairly expensive guitar at a garage sale and getting it for $70 because the seller didn't play electric lol. BUT COME ON, THESE ARE SO EXPENSIVE! LOL
@66612345678 easily gotta be the steal of the decade... SO lucky dude, I only wish I could get to put my hands on the ivories of one of these in person some day
Blancmange were heavy Jupiter 8 users....and I mean HEAVY. The song you mention has some obvious JP8 sounds...the brassy stabs which come in at around 10 seconds...and then further in at 2 minutes you hear a subtle background string.
Just when I think modern Roland synths sound decent I stumble upon a video like this and then the digital synths don't seem so great. This sounds so fucking amazing.
Anyone know what keyboards might've been used on Japan's 'Tin Drum' which is from 1980 I think. Amazing sounds on there.....was there a fairlight involved? Akai?
The synth sounds on Tin Drum came from the Prophet 5. Most of the 'metallic' clonking noises came courtesy of the P5's polymod section. If you enjoy the tone of the Prophet, then check out the film scores to the 'The Fog' (Prophet 10) and 'Escape From New York'.
Most were owned by studios or rented out....some musicians who had money to burn or were successful bought them outright. I would say atleast half the JP8's ever made (circa 1000) probably featured on major songs of the time. I know my one did.
The rolls royce of keyboard back then...may have been the JP8, Prophet 5....and quite possibly the early digital sampling keyboards like the Synclavier and Fairlight.
In an article about the Prophet 5 in Sound on Sound on the net, they what all the big polysynths cost then and secondhand prices when the article was written.They were much cheaper just a few years ago but I've seen some ads so perhaps people ask too much.
On BBC4 Synth Britannia the OMD bloke says he got a Korg from his Mum's Kays catalogue, someone else worked at a yoghurt factory to save. One guy had to choose between a car or a synth! Gary Numan first used a Minimoog hired by the last group in the studio. Duran Duran started with a Wasp and only had a Jupiter 8 later. Some well known artists get given instruments by companies for publicity but by then they can afford one anyway!
Then there was the Synclavier, PPG waveterm and Fairlight CMI systems.
Unless you count a Steinway Grand Piano?
As per your secondary question, I guess most keyboard players would have had a background learning piano, which would mean a certain social set I suppose.
@sorcerio A lot of their v-series stuff, v-piano, v-studio, etc, and their keyboard amps are still pretty good... not to mention they have some cool stuff goin on with the d-beam controller, really cool for playing with live
Do you remember how you made that first patch? It's so awesome! The whole demo is awesome! I got a Jupiter-8v so it'd be cool to know how you made some of these pathes!
i like to listen to this as a thing in its own right! not just a demo

I could do a great copy of the music from The Day The Earth Stood Still with it. Bacon frying was a classic sound.

Captain2Pig 1 year ago 4
@Captain2Pig
Blancmange were heavy Jupiter 8 users....and I mean HEAVY. The song you mention has some obvious JP8 sounds...the brassy stabs which come in at around 10 seconds...and then further in at 2 minutes you hear a subtle background string.
Great band....

Anyone know what keyboards might've been used on Japan's 'Tin Drum' which is from 1980 I think. Amazing sounds on there.....was there a fairlight involved? Akai?
Would love any info.
magus1805 1 year ago
@magus1805 pretty sure they used one of these. check out live videos
Deesade86 1 year ago
@magus1805

Stick 'Street Hawk Intro' into the Youtube search engine and prepare youself for Prophet 5 overkill
DIGITALSCREAMS 1 year ago
@DIGITALSCREAMS
A lot of prophet 5 was used but also the Roland System 700 was used.
Roland was used as an example on the song Ghosts abut 28 seconds in. A very floating sample/hold sound in stereo panning.
This from a good source. hehe
JarreYuri 1 year ago
@DIGITALSCREAMS
Did the Prophet 10 exist in 1979? I am sure Carpenter used a P5, but I am not sure about a 10.

Im pretty sure the P10 came out before the P5.
The P5 was an attempt to reduce the overheating/tuning issues....correct me if im wrong.

How much did one of tese retail for at the time?
Did keyboardists in a band generally come from more affluent backgrounds than other band members ? They must have been expensive.
What was the Rolls Royce of keyboards at the time?
mattah111 1 year ago 6
@mattah111
JP8's cost around $4999.00 back in 1981
Most were owned by studios or rented out....some musicians who had money to burn or were successful bought them outright.
DIGITALSCREAMS 1 year ago 4
@DIGITALSCREAMS Notably, $5000USD in 1981 equates to $11649.93 in 2009.
Sounds about right, given what people somehow pay for these for on ebay. I mean, okay, they're classic, but seriously. :)
I have to agree, no idea how bands paid for these. I guess you either had a record label buy it for you, or you got a Jupiter 6.
Great synth though, thanks for sharing some sounds!

In an article about the Prophet 5 in Sound on Sound on the net, they what all the big polysynths cost then and secondhand prices when the article was written.They were much cheaper just a few years ago but I've seen some ads so perhaps people ask too much.
Laura041974 1 year ago
On BBC4 Synth Britannia the OMD bloke says he got a Korg from his Mum's Kays catalogue, someone else worked at a yoghurt factory to save. One guy had to choose between a car or a synth! Gary Numan first used a Minimoog hired by the last group in the studio. Duran Duran started with a Wasp and only had a Jupiter 8 later. Some well known artists get given instruments by companies for publicity but by then they can afford one anyway!
Laura041974 1 year ago
@mattah111 £6,889. RRP if memory serves.
Rolls Royce would be the Yamaha Cs80 and GS1
SCI Prophet 10.
Then there was the Synclavier, PPG waveterm and Fairlight CMI systems.
Unless you count a Steinway Grand Piano?
As per your secondary question, I guess most keyboard players would have had a background learning piano, which would mean a certain social set I suppose.
osummuso 1 year ago
@mattah111 I would say the Fairlight for sure. It would run about $25,000 back then and was one of the first computer synths.
I recently got Arturia's jupiter 8v vsti and it is amazing!!!
All of these sounds are so familier, just like digitalscreams said these were in everything in the 80's damn near every movie and most music.
jcostello117 1 year ago
@mattah111 The 'Roller' of keyboard synths is probably the Yamaha CS-80, $7,000 at the time! :-O (about a years salary)
