I was fortunate enough to see this show in Atlanta, GA on July 9th 1991. It was the summer after high school graduation & before going off to college. It was amazing! I was and still am a huge YES fan!
I remember at this concert the Fire Marshall told organizers that there were too many people congregated in one area and that they had to be dispersed...immediatly! Organizers reluctantly agreed but as they started to move the audience back from the dance floor, the Fire Marshall came running back in and said No! No! No! I meant up on the stage! True story...I swear.
Trevor Rabin is great, and becoming a part of Yes was very beneficial, but as far as who's who. Steve Howe wrote "Roundabout" and other Yes classics. Rabin wrote "Owner of a lonely heart"......
Trevor Rabin was far & above the best musician of this bunch --- great guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist & songwriter. Without his input, Yes would have been a forgotten 70's band like Kansas, both of which I love, but Kansas doesn't headline USA amphitheaters. What I hate the most is that Jon has to sing harmony a lot because the other guys can't hit the harmony notes. Having said this, I would give my left arm to be at this concert live via Star Trek teleportation - YES RULES!!!
I remember Rick Wakeman saying that Yes would probably still exist long after he's dead and buried. Given that Yes has just turfed out Oliver Wakeman and Jon Anderson...he's probably right. How much Yes will actually be left by that point (considering the actual Yes band are almost a touring covers band now, and the last traditional progressive rock album they made was Going for the One), remains to be seen.
@fbhogg1234 think of not what Rick said too literaly, like everything music moves on over the years thank goodness. The stuff we like right now or in the past is just that, stuck, and it will be judged on merit in the future rightly or wrongly. The spirit of Yes and their music may well live on far beyond the original band - nuff said?
You could have any of a half dozen guitarists in this band and make it work...Switch BASS PLAYERS...NOT!!!! Would NEVER work...Chris Squire Is YES...It's HIS band, He is the one who originally put it together in the mid/late 60's.
This is one awesome band! I love the changes they go through in line up and sound. It is why they keep selling records, they keep getting new audiences. They find an audience that is more open minded to longer, involved pieces with intricate playing.
For me, Yes was never a great band but it had some big highlights, like the albums Fragile, Relayer and 90125. I think some of their material is overrated by the prog. rock community, but that's only my opinion. If I had to define the sound of Yes, than that would be Squire, definitely.
I love Yes. They're my favorite band and they always will be. This performance is great, but I still miss the day when their sound had a bit more edge and bite to it. Rick's solo sounds a bit light. I miss the sound of the Hammond organ. Steve's guitar is more "tinny" sounding. Chris bass doesn't have that heavy thud it used to. But their performance is spot on as usual. I'm not disappointed at all really.
@stolendolin no one "saved" YES--YES died before the "Drama' album--I do like "Tempis Fugit"--but I don't consider it "YES"--Anderson,Bruford,Wakeman,Howe,Squire--that's YES--Rabin is great and "YES" went on--but the 70's was YES--the 80's was "MTV" YES--not the same chemistry and not the same band
@3953871 Why can't you people accept that sometimes a band isn't just one thing? Miles Davis changed jazz several times and nobody says the one and only Miles Davis was the one from 1950's. All this arguing is pointless, Yes is what it is and was what it was. Same thing for the same old Pink Floyd discussion, or the Gilmour vs. Waters thing. Each band formation had its highlights. So, really, enjoy what you like and don't waste time discussing things that won't change anything.
@stolendolin Hmmm. I don't think I'd credit Trevor for "saving" Yes although he was instrumental in it's revival. If Trevor hadn't been around I'm sure that Yes would have cropped up in some incarnation or another. That's the nature of Yes. Nobody would be willing to let the band just die off.
I already have a good boot of this on videotape, but will buy the dvd when released. Sounds the same as I remember. A BIG sound, at times fantastic. Still a lot of good playing is buried in the mix/ a part of the penumbra, the vast overall. You'd think Yes would have recorded a few shows on multi-track.
If this original WERE multi-tracked, as it should have been, think how a good remix could sound in 5.1! A careful remix could have made it one of the best around.
PLEASE CHRIST S. DONT MAKES MISTAKES..........YES ARE......AW...SH....CS....RW & MR. JON ANDERSON.........NOT REPLACEMENT..........PLEASE..........ITS BIG MISTAKE......IS SOMETHIN LIKE BEATLES WITHOUT JOHN......PM GH AND RS WERE INTELIGENT.....NOT TO REJOINT WITHOUT THE GENIUS OF JL.......SORRY CHRIS MANY OF US ARE NOT AGREE WITH YOUR FATAL EXPERIMENT....
Anything is better than what this so called YE$ is doing now.Howe has been phenomenal during touring with the current lineup, but aside from that, there is no feeling coming from the band.Having been to many shows over the years,i can honestly say that the band as it is currently constituted lacks feeling and seems to just be going through the motions and any YES fan that thinks otherwise is in serious denial. Some nights have been pretty good, others horrendous.Hoping for something next year
@bluejfk can I give some support to Mon. David. He really is growing into the job. Sure, he has big boots to fill, but he's doing fine. At least he remembers the words; when I saw Wakeman and Anderson Jon was singing from sheets of paper. And what he was singing wasn't hugely wonderful. (The Living Tre tour)
i am pretty sure this is going to be another Voiceprint dissapointment, neither improved audio nor picture. The positive issue is that fans finally can get this concert at affordable price. This was released on tape and on dvd in japan years ago and it was a little expensive. This time also, you can buy only the cd audios separetely. I think Yes needs to retire in a decent way, i do not know what Squire is thinking, Yes always will be Yes!!
The Union tour means a lot to me. It was the first time I ever saw YES. I moved to CA from WI after I went bankrupt. I was in the Mojave desert when I met this Mexican at a 7/11 near the apartment I moved in who told me he's a Jethro Tull fanatic. Then, when he paused to catch his breath, I said, "That's how I feel about YES." "Really? They're playing in LA next week." Despite all the Sold Out signs I managed to get a 6th row ticket. Finally, I was able to see and feel and listen to heaven.
I'd rather see YES with Trevor Rabin than the current line-up. How about Rabin, Anderson and Wakeman (and/or Kaye!) getting together?! Squire and White should come to their senses and join them. Leave Howe in Asia for the moment.
There are many jewels which haven't been played live for many years: Endless Dream, Changes, Lift Me Up, Hold On, etc
If Howe wants to join them later on and do a reunion tour again, fine. But right now many people would like to see a tour with Trevor Rabin!!
@douglasdg1999 You would like a new band called "Yoso". Its Sherwood and Kaye, plus Bobby Kimball from Toto (and two other really great guys on gtr and drums).
