REPO! was based on a 10 min opera by the same writer called "The Neco-merchants debt" where a grave robber falls in debt over a heart transplant and trys to out run a Repoman.

Necromerchants Debt was inspired in 1998, according to an interview given by the authors of Repo!. Notice I'm not claiming Repo! is a ripoff, but they were independently inspired works of fiction developed in different ways that ended up (somehow) shooting at neighboring soundstages.

Eric Garcia wrote the short story in 1997 which the film and novel are based off of. The storylines for REPO! and R.M. are completely different: Dad's a Repo monster vs the repo man missed a payment on his own heart and is on the run. REPO! is a rock opera, but R.M. is a noir thriller.

Proof that Eric Garcia started writing his short story in 1997, and not after attending or hearing about Repo! ? At the moment, we only have his essay in the back of his book.

If legal proceedings on plagarism start, I'm sure the court will get a lot more evidence, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have made such a claim if he couldn't back it up; authors are usually good about tracking their own copyrights.

I'm still going to see this, but it ABSOLUTELY ripped off repo... They were filmed in sound stages adjacent to each other, and Mambo sent over people to see what Repo was doing during filming....
