I always like the complexity of Jhap taal ,when I was in tabla class about 13 years ago I was introduced to Jhaptaal by my teacher and from since Jhaptaal is my favorite taal.
i agree with your comments in full usually artists are so worried about speed alone and forsake clarity but with a good guru who will keep you disciplined you needn't worry about that...thank you for posting this series appreciate it alot
I was learning a composition that included "katha gadi gina" and my teacher pointed out a fingering error. Once I corrected my fingering I was able to go much faster while maintaining good clarity.
Tablameister. I agree with you on material, creativity, speed and clarity. I would also add that guru is very important. Only a great Ustad can teach the small details that are needed to play the compositions correctly. In every other way of learning small details are lost. All the traditional compositons performed should be taught from Guru otherwise it's impossible to play them exactly correct. A good Guru is a key to everything.
Few mention their criteria for determining what makes a great tabla player. The things I look for are: (1) Material. Does the tabla player have a good stock of traditional compositions and from which gharanas? (2) Creativity. How creative is the tabla player when creating variations and new compositions? (3) Speed. How fast can the compositions be performed? (4) Clarity. How crisp and clear are the compositions when played at high speed?
Excellent footage and awesome performance...looking forward for the second part...! Thanks for sharing with us those recordings...please is there any DVD available of this performance ? - Thanks, H

Yes, most defintely. In fact, without a good guru, speed and clarity are usually not possible. There is no substitute for a good guru.
