its like hello get a job at mcdonalds have your other kids get a job any where instead of living with a wacko of a mother lol. but ofcorse its a movie.
@n31shaboo it is because they have been starved for two weeks and the twins are lacking nutrients. Blood contains nutrients and that is why he fed it to them ._.
this movie is upsetting. Their siblings are starving and instead of just kicking the door down and knocking that old bitch out they're gonna sit back and watch? Also why the hell would you go in the grandfathers room and risk being seen? all those months of captivity for nothing because he saw you? What a bunch of idiots, must be all that inbreeding..
@SheddyShankbone in the book she the grandmother didnt cut off her hair she ordered chris to do it and when he did not she put tar in it while she slept chris was able to get it out but when the grandmother didnt bring food he just cut the front of her hair and had her cover the rest with a scarf the grandmother still didnt feed them for 2 weeks
@JENNnEDed I mean the people who made the movie could have made it look a little prettier. I've read the book so I understand the circumstances, but did her hair have to look this ugly?! Girls can have short hair WITHOUT looking like Paul McCartney. :l
@Heartlikearock87 I agree. In the books she was described as looking like and angel and with such a rare beauty. I've seen many more actors from back then who were much more beautiful.
@justwannacomment66 I was just going to post that too. FUNNY! Why did they go in there anyways. Idiots. I would have snuck into the kitchen PRONTO. Raid the fridge and go.

In the book...Cthy and Chris became loving...I mean banging each other....In part 1 GARDEN OF SHADOWS You'll learn that Corrine isnt the grandmother biological daughter...she is the grandfatherS daughter...grandfather raped his own fathers 19 year old wife which is Corrines real mother....You all have to get GARDEN OF SHADOWS....BETTER YET ALL THE BOOKS...ITS A SERIES...I PROMISE YOU THEY ARE GOOD...THE MOVIE IS CRAP COMPARING TO THE BOOKS!!!!! Corrine also had the kids ith her BROTHER NT UNCLE
@saktress that part isnt meant to be read until last though because when you read it youre meant to have a solid hate for the grandmother in your mind and youre meant to think you know the story and then it comes with the twist and everything you know changes as realisation dawns on you. so technically its not the first book it is the last one
That man isn't Bart! He looks nothing like the Bart I, and I'm sure many other people who read the book, would imagine. I thought the movie was okay and I wasn't sure why everyone kept complaining...until I read the books! They were wonderful and gorgeously written. Now I know why everyone is making such a fuss.
@jetsundolma1 "I always loved you the best Corrine". Going by the book, Cathy physically resembled her mother tremendously, and it seems that the director wanted, in his screenplay, to suggest that incest may be something common in this particular family...since the delusional grandfather SNATCHES the girl he assumes is his daughter like a madman and proceeds to mutter the line written above. Well...eek..
... something I never understood from either the book nor the movie is why if they are just as starved and malnourished as the twins Chris gave him his blood? I mean it will have no real nutrients since he hasn't eaten either. ._.U
@akissy It isn't about nutrients. Chris feeds Cory his blood in order to prevent him from dying from starvation, not from his illness. Blood is better than nothing I guess.
I own the DVD now. I saw the film on a gray sky saturday when I was about five sometime in the 80's. All I can say is after the kids survived and got out the grandmother would have had one hell of a lawsuit on her hands. And definite prison time. Which of course is warranted. This is modern day of course.
I thought the film left too many things out. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good film worth watching. It's just that parts of the story didn't make as much sense as it did in the book. For one thing, I expected the twins to make more of a fuss about everything that was going on. I still remember the first tantrum over breakfast: "WEEE DON'T LIKE BACON AND EGGS!" LOL. The story works better when you hear more of the ever-changing moods of the characters.
Chris is a really brave guy... he would cut his hand so that his blood can nourish his lil bro. I mean, nearly everyone love their siblings, though they don't show it all the time, but no matter how much I love my lil sis n bro i'm still not sure if i'd do the same. Not that I wouldn't, but more like I couldn't... just watching red, sticky blood oozing out of sumone's finger made me feel close enough to death already... ewww... :(
@mimifakhira3005 If he was really brave he would have knocked the crap out of his grandmother and taken his family out of there just like any other 17 year old boy would do.
@hjb103055 The whole point is that the kids stay hidden up in the attic, because if their grandfather learns of their existence, he will disinherit their mother once again and her plan of inheriting his enormous fortune will be ruined. Thus, the kids are supposed to stay in the attic until their ill grandfather dies. It's got nothing to do with the grandmother keeping them prisoners against her will. She just wants to make their stay in the attic more unbearable by starving and beating them.
@mimifakhira3005 i could cut my skin for family...but could i cut off a finger or something? I dont know. My issue isnt really blood...my fear is heights. it would be a real challenge to have to climb for them :(
can you imagine what it would be like to be imprisoned and starved to death? this is just beyond... and it happens, maybe not like this hollywood movie, but it does.
Aiigggghhh!!! I hate this movie! This isn't the right set design AT ALL. The color scheme is all wrong - it's supposed to be done in pink, plum, violet, etc., not this drab dreary brown and gold. Also, that swan bed is all wrong. It's supposed to be beautiful, not grotesque like a murder victim splayed out in The Silence of the Lambs. God, I really hope they do a re-make. This version sucks.
@SadieMiss The book is good you shouldn't skip it cause of that. They only go at it once and it's later on in the book and it's written like Chris raped her.
@jk0745 Well, no. The grandmother stopped bringing them food to punish them further, and Chris feeded Cory his blood to prevent him from dying. Blood, as another user said, is nutritious, it has glycose and minerals and things and it can prevent death from starvation.
@Icegemz69 yea it's creepy but it's a beautiful creepy. It's the song cathy's jewelry box plays, but somewhat distorted which is suiting. Since their father's death, their lives have been f* up.
@1mnmfan Well, obviously because their mother has been living in luxury and lavishness like some goddam princess while her kids are being starved and being treated like dirt up in that locked room upstairs...
I can't believe how the Mother became the evil character in this story. Her desire for her Father's love became corrupted when her parents began to shower her with money and luxuries. She seems to completely be oblivious to her childrens' suffering; what kind of sane mother would say, with a straight face, "There will be no funeral, my son is buried already." 17 lashes with a horse whip are a lot better than what these kids had to suffer.
Here's an excerpt from the screenplay; "we SEE Corine now spinning gracefully with still another man, obviously the belle of the ball. Then the music stops, and a string of fanfare of the 'pomp and circumstance' variety begins. Next moment the Grandmother makes her entrance. Her hair is uncustomarily 'done', swept up atop her head in a mountain of curls, and her gown is scarlet. Both kids react in amazement. Chris: "My God, that's the first time I've ever seen her in anything but gray." .....
@bono16161 Lol at the dialogue in the script. Chris and Cathy sure weren't as innocent in it as in the book. It would've been such an awesome movie if Craven eventually directed it, but I love the eventual movie too.
Thanks for the uploads. I was wondering, when the grandmother looks at Corinne with jealousy when she's nursing her father, is that scene supposed to be like the scene at the beginning? I mean the one where Corinne looks at Cathy with jealousy when she's hugging her father?
It was the director's idea to make the movie the way it is. I've got a copy of a screenplay of this movie written by Wes Craven, you can imagine how different that version would be as well.
He gives off his blood for them to drink coz the granny punishes them for the "sin" she keeps on insisting they committed. How poor children they were.
He gives off his blood for them to drink coz the granny punishes them for the "sin" she keeps on insisting they committed. How poor children they was.
i have read the whole book series and there is actually alot that isn't shown in the movie. like Cathy and Christopher become "more than brother and sister" but the book is DEFINITLY worth reading.
@sassycookergirl most definatley, ive read the whole series more than once, and theyre just amazingly written..if i could make movies i'd make the whole series, and try to do as much justice to the books :)
@LittleKittyWittyAMVs Yeah, agreed. I mean, we're talking about the 1980's here, not the 1890's - short hair on girls was really normal. I would have understood the hair-cutting more if granny cut it all off, leaving big scars in the scalp.
@MsSarjen What the grandmother wanted to achieve wasn't punish Cathy, actually, but make her unnatractive so that she wouldn't be appealed to Chris. Remember, she thought they were banging each other, only they weren't (at least in the movie), so hacking off the hair wasn't a punishment at all, it was more like an attempt to make her ugly (and if you read the books, she was kinda jealous of Cathy's hair because Granma was actually bald and always wore a wig).
The arsenic is killing them. Arsenic poisoning kills ur red blood cells, and obviously u need all ur bloods lol thats why some ppl use that as rat poison. It kills you quickly depending how strong u r physically... There's always a weaker sibling in a family, take Little Women...
the girl who plays cathy looks exactly like i pictured but she is much older!... and the twins r cubbier than i would have thought but carrie looks the same and cory is so much more cuter but his hair is too curly lol in the book its not. and chris oh dont get me started he is the cute sweet strong smart grown up guy in the book but completely!!!!! different in this movie oh and cathy is not like in the book either shes would ask lots of questions and idk just rly differnt???..
this movie definitely spent too much film on characters walking around and looking at eachother and weird segues... more of the original action could have been retained if the movie didn't spend do much time on nothing...
how prefer how they escaped in the book.. chris is able to get his hands on the key long enough to press it into a bar of soap and then he carved out an exact duplicate from a piece of wood..
It is a sort of good movie- the background music makes it seem a whole lot better. Although, the book is fantastic, this movie to me is not good enough for a book that is so brilliant and beautifully written.
he gives cory his blood because its nutritious, its got minerals and stuff in it and i guess if your on the verge of dying it could actually prolonge death. maybe thats how the idea of vampires came about..
@oTallySmitho You should read the book! The incestuous love story between Chris and Cathy is the main focus of the first book as well as the subsequent sequels, Petals On The Wind, If There Be Thorns, and Seeds Of Yesterday, but is pretty much ignored by the movie, unfortunately.
Isn't Bart suppose to be much younger??? He looks older than Corrine.

@bono16161 I meant to say a screenplay of the story, not of this movie.
bono16161 1 year ago
@bono16161 can u send it to me?
Kiddcinema17 1 year ago
@bono16161 please share a copy of this screen play with me, Wes Craven would have done a much much better job of this movie.

He gives off his blood for them to drink coz the granny punishes them for the "sin" she keeps on insisting they committed. How poor children they were.

i have read the whole book series and there is actually alot that isn't shown in the movie. like Cathy and Christopher become "more than brother and sister" but the book is DEFINITLY worth reading.
sassycookergirl 1 year ago
@sassycookergirl most definatley, ive read the whole series more than once, and theyre just amazingly written..if i could make movies i'd make the whole series, and try to do as much justice to the books :)

I sort of like Cathy's new look and hair. She looks better that way.
LittleKittyWittyAMVs 1 year ago
@LittleKittyWittyAMVs Yeah, agreed. I mean, we're talking about the 1980's here, not the 1890's - short hair on girls was really normal. I would have understood the hair-cutting more if granny cut it all off, leaving big scars in the scalp.
MsSarjen 1 year ago
@MsSarjen What the grandmother wanted to achieve wasn't punish Cathy, actually, but make her unnatractive so that she wouldn't be appealed to Chris. Remember, she thought they were banging each other, only they weren't (at least in the movie), so hacking off the hair wasn't a punishment at all, it was more like an attempt to make her ugly (and if you read the books, she was kinda jealous of Cathy's hair because Granma was actually bald and always wore a wig).

@DeaneShafortock Olivia (the grandmother) did the same thing to Alicia in the Garden of Shadows book because Malcolm liked her

The arsenic is killing them. Arsenic poisoning kills ur red blood cells, and obviously u need all ur bloods lol thats why some ppl use that as rat poison. It kills you quickly depending how strong u r physically... There's always a weaker sibling in a family, take Little Women...

jcroft1990 1 year ago 2
the girl who plays cathy looks exactly like i pictured but she is much older!... and the twins r cubbier than i would have thought but carrie looks the same and cory is so much more cuter but his hair is too curly lol in the book its not. and chris oh dont get me started he is the cute sweet strong smart grown up guy in the book but completely!!!!! different in this movie oh and cathy is not like in the book either shes would ask lots of questions and idk just rly differnt???..
TheMegonianShow 1 year ago
this movie definitely spent too much film on characters walking around and looking at eachother and weird segues... more of the original action could have been retained if the movie didn't spend do much time on nothing...

It is a sort of good movie- the background music makes it seem a whole lot better. Although, the book is fantastic, this movie to me is not good enough for a book that is so brilliant and beautifully written.

he gives cory his blood because its nutritious, its got minerals and stuff in it and i guess if your on the verge of dying it could actually prolonge death. maybe thats how the idea of vampires came about..
btw im just guessing...ive never read the book
tho i want to now!!
oTallySmitho 2 years ago 21
@oTallySmitho You should read the book! The incestuous love story between Chris and Cathy is the main focus of the first book as well as the subsequent sequels, Petals On The Wind, If There Be Thorns, and Seeds Of Yesterday, but is pretty much ignored by the movie, unfortunately.
