  • I love this video. I come to it often. Like salmon50 says, she sounds just like my late Nan. She was a Corcoran from St. Marys and married my Poppy O'Dwyer from St. Johns. She mentions Petey Corcoran. My Nan's brother. I am from the States. I have been to NFLD numerous times, mothers side. Blessed, Quinn/O'Dwyer. Very proud of my roots there. Even though I had to fight everytime I went there, being a Yank and all, LOL!

  • I'm so happy to be from Newfoundland! I don't have as much Irish in me as some Newfies since only my mom's side is descended from the Irish, but I'm still proud of our connection with Ireland. I just wish that the accents and culture were still as strong as they use to be.. I'm a teenager and I wish I sounded less Canadian and more Newfie.

  • What a great video. I am Irish, married to an Irish woman and we live in Co. Tipperary. I played the opening part of the video to my wife and she was convinced the woman speaking was actually from Ireland!

  • my parents came from Southern Ireland my mother sounded just like the lady in the vid

  • Sounds like Irish and Dutch.. so odd.

  • ?????????

  • i have cousins der never seen dem befor doe am from dublin

  • These old ladies sound like they could be living down the road from me here in Wexford.

There's some slight quirks but they sound almost exactly like people from Wexford or Waterford.

  • @thescifiZipacna

i second that motion, loads of my relations live in wexford, Kennedys and Browns and they sound so much like that old woman

  • @bridgetoofar2 my dear, i'd be in Ireland in a flash. i will defintley be there one day.

  • Some Irish fishermen Guys got lost in the 17th century found land And called it Newfoundland before getting so drunk that they woke up Canadian.

  • The Irish have been coming to Newfoundland since St. Brendan did in the 6th Century.

  • Thomas Francis Meagher, of the Young Irelanders and who instated the Irish Tri-color, was the son of a Newfoundlander.

  • this is awesome. great to see the connection between my country and newfoundland!

  • She is exactly like my grandmother!!

  • holy crap I can hardly understand them lol

  • My Dad comes from Corner Brook. I was born in Germany and now live in Manitoba. He was always the entertainer for every party for some reason? I know now why i like to entertain --German/Newfie= booze and tons of fun - its there heritage and rights.

  • My home, my culture....these are the people my father always made sure I would know as my culture. He took me with him to every kichen party he took part in - he loved his music and he was an amazing dancer. I truly miss this place and these people. God Bless you all.

  • It's like a Waterford accent!

  • Oh please, this is too funny, it sounds like she only left Waterford yesterday!! feckin' brilliant!

  • I really hope to get to Newfoundland soon. There is a Gaelic program on TG4 (Irish tv) about Newfoundland right now. Makes me want to jump on a plane right now.

  • @MTLIRISH The girl that slighted me..

  • @MTLIRISH the tune sounds like the star of county down

  • I kinda wish seeing this that we stayed independant. Also don`t forget the french, theres not alot of them, but they don`t exactly blend.

  • Last one standin gets to shoe the Donkey

  • Newfoundland has many differnt accents ..the southern shore an cape shore have more or less irish accents..but newfoundland is as much an if not a little more english as is it irish. since mass imagration stoped in the mid to late 1800's we grew a population of about thirty thousand to over 560 000 in the 1990's. . very irish an very english . some scots...its like a british/irish melting pot. im rare in the fact that only one of my parents has a irish backround.

  • where are they from? Ireland or Newfounland?

  • Lovely video and song is very appropriate :) I moved to Canada from Ireland 2 years ago almost and I am looking foward to visiting Newfoundland as its is so like home..of course the people here are lovely and down to earth, they are originally from Ireland :) miss home listening to this.

  • I love this video. I was showing my girl how my Nan sounded and this is dead on. My mother is from St. Johns and her mother (Nan) was from St Marys. The lady Lizzy actually mentions a Petey Corcoran. My Nans brother was Pete Corcoran. I am American born (dad was in the USAF stationed in NFLD). I have been to NFLD 5 times and will go back before I die. I'm very proud to be from Irish NFLD descent.

  • @patrickquinn33 Dad, I love this video! It sounds so much like Great Nan! Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to visit NFLD. Hopefully one day I can take my family there!

  • I'm from Carlow in Ireland and I was delighed to come across this video showing connections between Newfoundland and Ireland.

  • @Proudnewfoundlander1

I like the way you say 'me' instead of 'my'. We do the same in Ireland, lol.

  • There is definately a touch of the Waterford accent in that women's voice at the beginning, maybe a slight touch of Cork. Amazing really how the accent could survive so long over there, it kinda gives you a sense of what the Irish accent might have really sounded like 200 years ago.

  • im from waterford and i,d say they would pass for local,s.. gawan the deise

  • if jesus comes again he will come in newfoundland firsti just know it

  • Astonishing. She sounds like she's from the west of Ireland.

How many Newfoundlanders have such accents?

  • all newfoundlander's have accents like theirs some aren't so strong. but we all have the accent.

i can't wait for the day i get to go to ireland. i'm sure its like home away from home

  • @kristenpetten That's great, It's so good that you are proud of your Irish roots. Come to Ireland

  • @kristenpetten we look forward to welcoming any of ye that come home.

  • This is a prime example of our Irish roots. Great Video...making me home sick

  • they're irish!!!!!!!!!!

  • These are the most irish sounding people outside of Ireland I've ever heard, amazing, got to go their

  • Brilliant!! newfoundland/ ireland all the same in my eyes!!

  • LMAO! That's brilliant, a big Irish sounding community in the middle of Canada, FAN TAS TIC!!!!!

  • And we're proud of it.

    Matt

    Newfoundland

  • Ye should be! I cant wait to go over there some day. It makes me so proud to be Irish to see the likes of Newfoundland and they seem the same as their ancestors were

  • the Irish and Newfies have a lot in common, but then newfie ancestry is Irish for a large part. Not just the accents.. but also a lot of the phrases are the same and have a similiar if not the same meaning. I'm from Cork and live here in Canada now with a few years, and been to St. Johns to visit a few times now.. its remminiscent of the old West Cork.... if there could be any place like Ireland outside of Ireland itself.. it'd be Newfoundland

  • I'm from Ireland and there are amazing simularities in the both the Irish accent and the Newfoundland accent.

  • Great find, thanks for sharing :)

    Adds to favourites*

  • haha omg she sounds just like my grandmother who live in nova scotia but is from newfoundland! LOTS of people cant make her out but I can. Took me a while tho.

  • dat wan from wexford?

  • thts freaky shit, im from waterford and those accents are spot on as if they just lived out the country a bit from my own house- yer wans name is Mary Power- thts a common waterford name too, Their accents r defo of south-east ireland decent

  • wow thats so cool, The Mary Power in this video is my grandmother. I am so happy to find this video on here. I didn't see it before

  • Newfoundland should be renamed New Ireland

  • Well, the Irish did give it a name in their own language. Talamh an Éisc.

And it's the only place outside of Europe to have its own name in Gaelic.

  • and Newfoundland once had its own dialect of Gaelic.

  • 80% of the irish that went over all came fron a 30 mile radius of waterford port.waterford and wexford make up the bulk

  • @JasonVz pfft gay nationalist sentiment.

  • @tallicalad ??????????????????????

  • @roder51 WHY in any way should be it be renamed New Ireland. What because people of Irish descent live there? Especially today. It's got a name, it doesn't need changing, hence my comment dismissing it as 'gay nationalist sentiment'.

  • @JasonVz New Ireland's already taken. It's an island in Papua New Guinea.

  • @JasonVz There actually is already a New Ireland. It's just north of Papua New Guinea. Their slogan is "We're much better than Old Ireland". True story.

  • great video tks.
