I have never agreed with this band's classification as a "Southern Rock" band. They may look the part but they are too polished and the material lacks the bluesy content of Lynard Skynard and the like. I would put them more in the category with Boston or Kansas.
@kduncanala I would not compare them with Kansas, as they certainly lack the artrock element that Kansas was known for. Boston had some similar tunes, but they made a bigger effort at vocal harmonies. So 38 Special, to me, is a class on its own :)
At the time I did not like the song too much as I was into The Clash, Minor Threat, and The Jam, but now I love it and cherish the classic rock daze... classic
This is when they were really just first becoming big, I was AT this show in 1980 as a 16 yr old kid with his drivers license for just a week. A whole car full of us went to this excellent show and got wrecked. What a blast!! And yes, I had the mullet, just like everyone else. Haha!
What a GREAT live band. And the kids right up against a two-and-a-half foot stage! I saw these guys outdoors at a county fair in the mid-'90's and they played hit after hit after hit. Then they played a MEDLEY of the REST of their hits! One of the best shows I've ever seen, hands down. Rock on, boys!
I just wanted all 38 Special fans to know that 38 Special will soon be visiting Long Island, on the waterfront at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.
They are performing July 17th 2011 along with over 35 other performers that weekend. There will be plenty of other rock, jam, folk, blues & “Americana” genres as well.
Definitely check it out, there’s more information on the Great South Bay Music Festival website!!!
Its amazing how much this sounds just like it does on the record.Barnes has a great voice. This band was very underrated and should have become alot bigger
@sammys70 Become bigger? I'm not sure how old you are but I'm 40 and I saw them in '89 fill Giants Stadium (@ 80,000 capacity) here in Jersey with Bon Jovi OPENING FOR THEM! Doesn't get much bigger than that.
I've seen this same show in GA back in 80. They were a awesome live band. Didn't miss a lick. I stood on the front row for several shows, always went away completely amazed.
Saw them in 85 or 86, I think either Night Ranger or Joe Walsh opened for them. Great concert, either way!

The key to this Band is the Rhythm section in all reality! They still are the best live act from the 80's left!
