The oldest throws tantrums from sensory over load. He is Autistic and you can't touch him when he is in one or it causes him to loose more control. It's embarrassing, but from watching this vid I think this child might have this disorder as well.

From the time my kid was 18 mos old till about 2 1/2 she was a hellish brat. Go into a public place she would take off running. If I had her in a stroller she'd scream bloody murder the entire time, ruining the outing. She had a horrible ear piercing scream too. So I quit taking her out in public for almost a year. She's 4yrs old now and very well behaved. It was like when she turned 3 a switch turned on and she wasnt such a brat anymore. "terrible twos" I guess.

Parents have to learn to reverse contingencies. Here is the way the pros do it. When the kid throws a tantrum like this immediately walk away so he can't see you. He will stop crying almost instantly. Then when he is not crying (step two), return smiling. If he cries again, repeat steps one and two.

Wow - that's not true in my case. If I leave the room with my daughter crying, she cries louder....where are you getting your info from? all kids are sooo not the same.

If your kid cries louder when you walk away, try putting some headphones on.

My daughter screams something fierce when we brush her hair. Yeah, it pulls, so I don't blame her. But I put my "noise canceling" headphones on my wife's ears while she brushed my daughter's hair. My wife pretended she couldn't hear the crying, and within minutes, the crying stopped. All I heard was the occasional "Ow" from the hair pulling, but crying was all gone.

Walking away in a public place may be a bad idea. At home is one thing, but in front of people... You wouldn't want someone stepping in the way, if you know what I mean.

However, if she just sat there and ignored him, he would eventually stop, and then she could just say, "Now that you're finished, let's go over here." As long as he knows he didn't win, after a while, the tantrums stop.

No, this kid needs to be left alone. As Mom tries to calm him down, she just feeds his tantrum. If she sits there and waits, he will calm down on his own. A cold, "Are you done?" when he is calm may let him know that she won't give in. A tantrum is just a fight for authority.
