You learn this in english i will assume? changing a sentence to another way of saying it or summarizing etc.. it applies to everything. It could be because of the Huang He (yellow river) which is the core of the ancient Chinese Civilisation and the life giving flood water that irrigates the earth and produces abundance and fortune (gold). Thus the connection between the gold and earth. The same way Westerners call oil the "Black Gold"

Or it could be because the color of mud and soil is mainly a brownish-yellow tint, and since the Chinese didn't really have a specific word for brown, they used yellow instead.
