  • The Flying Toothpick

    From Switzerland.

  • Lot of drag in that tail.... why not do away with it...

  • распил

  • It does look a bit shaky and fragile, admittedly. But the potential is there. Thumbs up.

  • What if an Albatross lands on the end of a wing?

  • @m4rkyboy maybe he learn how to fly without flap their wings

  • incrible! a great idea!

  • it only fits 1 person lol

  • Now imagine a solar-powered rocket!

  • @artman40 that's just madness.

  • cool but very slow flying

  • Stick that in your peace pipe n smoke it green peace

  • hermoso

  • Sexy !!!

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • Absolutely beautiful

  • all you hear is the fan, there no smoke coming out of the plane, and no fuel needed for this plane very amazing.

  • I wondered why it sounded so loud, stupid helicopter lol!

  • bad CGI

  • nice job!

  • @hbk621

i, and many other people, dont agree. It's not made to become, lets say, a person carrier plane, but to prove that we can use solar energy instead of petrol.

  • @hbk621 as it is it may seem useless but in actual fact its a revolution for the world of aviation. all break through were at first seen as "crap" or "inefficient" but as we all know the saying "the world was not created in one day" give this project time im sure it has great potential.

  • @TheRealSwisswiss

Even if you reach 100% efficiency on the panels and motors this technology still has no ground breaking commercial application, it is a novelty, a marvelous novelty but a novelty all the same.

  • No night fighter version??? (:

  • @BJBFOREST

    hehe :D

  • what happens when the sun goes in ?

  • @matclarence

it accumulates energy so it desnt just plumet down to the grown. =)

Think, otherwise, how would it fly in the night? :D

  • @txrki

It flew at night yesterday through early morning with 6 hours left to fly on stored enegry

  • @cx4shot

yep, it passed over my house when it took of and when it landed :D

  • It's very slow. So I think they had to reinforce the wing trailing edges - against bird strikes!

  • At night we need a lunar plane

  • @dinos8p

no...the plane accumulates energy. they're trying today for the first time to fly by night ( 25 hours )

  • only plane in the world that has to accelerate before landing

  • did it land?

  • Solar?

No "red-eye" flights on THIS one!

  • Solar cool!

  • I'm glad to see such environmental friendly innovations become part of our lives.

But I was wondering, is this new model capable of saving enough power to get to a safe landing even if clouds suddenly block the sunlight?

  • Wow..Awesome

  • so what can we do with this plane that can t carry much weight and travel very far?

  • Looks good, just hope those thin wings are up to it. I want to hear how they made it around the world.

  • I really don't know why they couldn't use a blended wing design. Would that not make it more compact with less wing length and more internal storage space?

  • Seems like it would lose to ducks in a flying race lol

  • @Albanianator looks like it would lose to a buttetfly

  • @Cssfiend haha =)

  • UAV Online FTW

  • @mark0shark0 Haha wow dude

  • Is there someone inside it or is it unmanned?

  • This is one of the greatest moments in human history!

  • The sound one hears is of a helicopter "escorting" the Solar Impulse. The aircraft itself is almost silent.

  • @goggle

  • Wow, it even makes some noise! :-)

  • Solar flights, fantastic!

  • Interesting to hear how much of the typical 'airplane sound' comes from the propellers themselves.

  • now all we need is a model that can reliably transport ca. 40 peeps across serious distances and voilá, we've replaced most short-range regional aircraft.

yeah, i'll keep dreaming. this project is gonna be torn into tiny pieces by pro-oil lobbyists. screw 'em.

  • @pleaseinsertacoin if we do something about it, like a protest, they might change their minds.

  • @MrStartrekepisodes i'm pretty sure protests are the main reason good ideas and the movements supporting them fail most of the time. a protest is only needed when there's been physical oppression of an idea or ideology.

but here's an awesome goal: MAKE SOLARPOWERED RC-PLANES WOOOO!!!!!1!!!!11!! seriously... that would kick ass.

  • @pleaseinsertacoin yea, by taking all the patens on stuff like this. Screw the state

  • @pleaseinsertacoin Sadly mate, these fuckers won´t let this project go "dangerous" for them, they´ll keep it like this just a project...god!! I hateeee capitalism!!!

  • @Moniles

@Moniles You're a fucking moron, capitalism made it possible to even think of inventing this technology, capitalism dictates where resources are allocated to provide maximal economic productivity, this technology has no real application, if capitalism develops technology that makes solar power aircraft more viable to be a part of a commercial enterprise then it will be implemented.

That said, i believe our capitliastic system is deeply flawed, but not for reasons anyone else would.

  • Just because Moniles complains about the capitalist system for not pushing through this clean technology, you call him a "fucking moron"? what are you? some paid agent or lobbyist for this economic system? because thats how you sound. Despite the fact that u might "oppose" this system also (which i cant read at all). There are strong economic pressure groups that would oppose the further development of this technology (oil lobby and what else).. So he was right about that.

  • @Okhlopkov

Yea, he is a moron and so are you, wtf? do you think oil companies are all powerful or something? do you think they have the kind of power over the economics of energy production that they could surpress the development of solar technology? They obviously don't because solar technology is making new breakthroughs everyday. The oil companies don't have to do anything to surpress solar flight, see my responce to TheRealSwissswiss. I'm an agent? Your fucking delusional!

  • De huevos!!

  • It is time to fight pollution once for all, solutions do exist! congrats Mr Piccard and all involved!

    Keep going!

  • @JLPVIDEO It is not yet economical, you arrogant greenist.

  • @TheAngryDuckman

Did you know that Belarus received approximately 70% of radioactive fallout from Chernobyl site ... Two million Belarusians including 500 000 children were living in contaminated zones. The people were not evacuated and generally poorly informed...

Maybe your brain was affected by this event... while your were born in 1991...

Now, try to slow down on violent video games and hip hop, grow up, and stop be unpolite with me... you Kid....

  • C'est très impressionnant. Bravo à vous M. Piccard et à toute votre équipe.

  • onwards and upwards! great accomplishment!

  • gran noticia, por ahí vamos bien!

  • gran noticia, por ahí vamos bien!

  • What a great day!!!

  • felicitaciones!!!!!! energia limpia........

  • Incredible compliment !

  • awsome!!!
