I'm from Roanoke. No 611 is not landlocked. The museum is right next to the main line tracks in downtown Roanoke. A couple of years ago she was pulled out and moved down the main track to the old train station for a special event then put back. When NS stopped steam in 1994 it was for good. But people have been hoping that some day they will decide to run 611 again even if its just once a year or so.
I thought #611 was drug out recently by an NS diesel through Roanoke? Where it sits now, under the shed is there track connection to other tracks, or is it landlocked? What is NS's policy on non-Amtrak excursions using non-Amtrak equipment by operators other than NS? Yes or no? Is #611 going to be cold forever like the PRR engines at Strasburg? Was NS intending to end the steam program permanently when they ended it? So it's gone forever? Unless Wick Moorman or a future CEO brings it back.
What's the chance of NS bringing 611 back? Or even Sou #4501? I wish NS would get back into the excursion business, maybe all railfans and steam fans should write Wick Moorman letters. Oh well, at least we have Steamtown, Reading and Northern, Strasburg, etc. still operating steam. And Steamtown and Reading and Northern are the only steam operators in the northeast US that operate long distance steam excursions up to 104-156 miles round trip. (Such as Scranton-Water Gap, Tunkhannock-Jim Thorpe)
Great to see a steam loco really pushed hard. What gradient was it tackling ?
If you like, watch a couple of PACIFIC'S REALY hard working 1 in 33 gradients of Blue Mountains line west of Sydney, Australia. We are lucky to still have these two in operation on excursions around Sydney. Please enjoy.

Steam Trains - 38's Over The Mountains (Part 1 of 6)
This is one of my favorite places to go train watching. So many great memories. Lost a wallet up there. Fell down while waiting on a train. Basically some bad luck.
4501 is definitely going to be restored. No word on 611 yet but it would only require relatively minor upgrades and repairs if it was done.

What cars will it be pulling in May? When I shot vid of 3751 in September 2008 it was pulling the AAPRCO convention tour.

I'd love to see UP 3985 pull that whole thing, sans diesels.
