Well of course it will be weird if you use 2 fingers and the 2 are your thumb and middle finger. Index finger is the more primary finger to use. It's not that difficult at all to use 2 fingers.

If he were incorporating more strings than essentially using just 4 strings then yeah, 3 fingers would be typically used. But this isn't the most complex arrangement.
