Anyone have experience with this model and the 916 model. I like the style of the 916 but can't seem to get a up close look at it anywhere. Honest opinions appreciated... Thanks
Why does it have to be S30V? Its would only make the knife more expensive and harder to sharpen plus the steel they chose is ment for the task it was made for. S30V is a steel snob's steel, it just sounds cool and high end. Thats just my opinion .
Mine as well arrived with what seemed like an unsharpened blade. Fortunately this took and held a convex edge very nicely. My pain-points on this knife are sharpening the rescue hook and dealing with the hook play when deployed. Otherwise this is my favorite EDC knife.
just found this blade on cutlery shoppe for only $105??!!! used promo code nutnfancy and benchmade code for 25% off figured id let every1 know cant let this 1 pass by get em while there hot
Five Star Reviews! Man this knife is so nice, review was done real well that I immediately ordered one after watching. When I got the knife I could not be more surprised!!! Sharp as hell and aesthetically pleasing. Couldnt have been more happier with a Benchmade purchase!
Hey Nutnfancy! I just had to get a 915 Triage in black and orange after watching the SHOT review and I can attest that the blade was VERY sharp out of box as of Nov 2011. I dare say sharper than the 470 Emissary I fell about equally in love with too. Thanks for the great reviews!
After watching this review, I realized this was the EDC knife I wanted. However...Benchmade seems to have some trouble with this knife. Nutn's came with a bad edge, mine came with a twisted blade. After seeing Nutin's review and running out to buy the knife, I noticed the blade was not centered when closed. Hmmm, guess I have to adjust it. Nope. The blade was (holding it closed with the tip pointing toward you) was far off to the right.Upon further examination, it turns out the entire blade...
im thinking about getting one and putting it in my cars glove box i think that would be and awesome knife to have in the car at all times, extremly useful.
I want one of these so bad, but it's just too expensive on my 17 year old budget! I really like the functionality of the triage series, i'm looking into a career in firefighting if not just volunteer. plus I prefer to be prepared for anything.
I purchase this knife a while back and love it! I use it as my EDC blade. I've also smashed a side window effortlessly and done some major damage to windshields with it (out of the car "testing") it's very effective and worth the money.
all these years i still don't have a benchmade knife :o ment to buy a griptilian a few times but never got round to doing it, think maybe coz the store always had ones w serrations while i wanted wihtout or something like that
mine is in black and it had that thin grine edge that benchmade is known for but it cuts man great !! its my fav it came tight and super race ready around $155 which is not bad for a benchmade great vid man TMP!!!!!! take care
Today i got the boker first responder (the little knife that nutn showed) and the rescue hook is really sharp.I tried it on some paracord and i was impressive.
@fmonk I feel the same way, I want this thing but it's a bit pricey for me. The closest alternatives I can find is either a spyderco assist for about half the price of the triage. Or whatever knife you already have and a separate rescue hook for about 20 bucks.
@brickboiler Actually I did find something with the same features for less. It is the CKRT M16 series. There are a few models of different sizes, around 50 bucks if you shop around. It may not be on the same level as the Benchmade, but since I'm not cutting seat belts and pulling people out of wrecks everyday, I don't know what I'm missing with the CKRT. Good enough for me!
@fmonk Yea man!! Check out the Gerber hinderer Rescue. Pretty much the same featurea... its not a benchmade and comes in a serrated blade, but its almost half the price. I carried one on duty for a long time, until I bought this one... also check out that sexy camillus heat... nutn has a great review on it
@fmonk im a fire fighter and carry a gerber knife that has a seat belt cutter window punch and has a blunt tip blade for safety could not tell you what its called but im sure their web site would tell you
@ky3232 Why would you want a folder for that? That would be pain in the ass to clean after that. If I would look for a knife, that I would use only for hunting I would check out some inexpensive fixed blades, but that's just me :-)
Just picked up a Triage today and I will be putting it to service. I am a firefighter and will be using it as a utility blade for auto extraction and whatever else i encounter.
Also, I think Benchmade definitely took notice of your critique because I experienced none of the issues to encountered in your review. I purchase the 915 with the black plain blade with, of course, orange handles.
This is such a magnificent knife. It opens so beautifully and elegantly. I purchased it based on your review! If you can take time out to answer this question I'd really appreciate it: would you keep this knife as a collectible and preserve it or would you put it to use to cut-up stuff with.
@nutnfancy Just my data point: my Triage was RAZOR sharp out of box. I was very impressed with the edge. Very solid knife too, mine had absolutely zero play in any direction. G-10 is a little rough, so it might start to rip up pockets with extended use. Definitely my go-to knife in any sort of emergency or WROL situation. Well worth the money IMO. Thanks for recommending it!
I just received my Triage today and love it! Its razor sharp, had a bit better blade centering than yours in this video and, like yours is adjusted, it has a just enough side to side play to allow smooth deployment without noticeable wiggle. The handles have great traction and the rescue cutter is awesome. I'm hoping to test the glass breaker soon. If I had the money I would have one of these in each of my cars, in my house and on my person.
Does anybody have a link to a demonstration of this knife tested against a modern automobile windshield/window? I am looking for a folding rescue knife as a backup to my EDC fixed blade knife. I just want something that is very effective at breaking glass and cutting seatbelts along with a decent backup blade I can use if I lose my primary knife.
@seekortry I used it on a windshield today and it destroyed it! Obviously it didn't shatter it because its safety glass but the knife almost went completely through and cracked the crap out of it with minimal effort.
@smoothmuth04 Thanks. That is all I needed to know. I wish it had a blade more like the Victorinox Rescue Knife's glass *cutting* blade, but this will do. I doubt I will ever have to cut out a windshield like in the Victorinox commercial. At least, I hope not. This knife provides an okay backup blade along with glass breaking and seat belt cutting capabilities. That's a huge increase in capabilities for my edc system.
A gunmen came to my house last nite so I called 915 for help as instructed. Surely enough, two hours after the first problem was solved a disgruntled wast German hamster breeder landed in small air craft skidding across and de-valuing two archers of my land. He emerged from the air craft clutching an old p226 in one hand and an oni hamster in the other, now I had two problems.
I live in Mobile, AL (rainiest city in the U.S.) and needless to say we have HIGH humidity. What would be the best blade steel (and maybe some specific knives) for wet climates like my own?
@DJL902 As long as it is a satin, polish, or coated blade, its fine.
The only thing i would not reccomend is an Aus-8 bead blast blade, blades like that rust horribly. (I have a CS spartan, and it always has some rust on it somewhere, im in the process of polishing it, cause the polished places dont rust, only the bead blast)
If youre super worried about rust, get a benchmade H20 griptilian, or one of the spyderco salt series.
@Kylef7735 Yeah, I thought about getting one of the spyderco salt series but I wasn't sure if you sacrifice blade strength or edge keeping for the rust resistance, Any thoughts? thanks!
Yes this is a nice knife. If you have 2 bills to drop on one. Must take exception to your slam of value priced Boker's. I have a Boker magnum stealth and for the money I am very pleased with it, as a matter of fact I would pay more for it. Pops open in a flash and is very sharp. On the heavy side but probably real nice if your breaking glass with it. Anyhow, if your not as wealthy as Nuttin don't overlook it
The last couple of Benchmades that I have picked up have been dull, with almost no relief edge. mini Grip, Mini Dejavoo, Nitrous Stryker. It really sucks that a company that sells higher priced Knives can't seem to get it right. I would stop buying from them if I didn't like thier designs so much. The Dejavoo and Stryker also have pretty weak Titanium liners. All I can say is that EVERY Spyderco I have bought has come razor sharp. I'm still a Benchmade fan but W.T.F.!!!
Hey all. Nice review Nutn! Just to shed a little light on the subject, the reason the tip is relatively rounded is because if you needed to slide it under an injured persons seat belt you minimize the risk of stabbing into them when sliding it under the belt. I am an EMT my self and I was told this by other rescuers. I have seen other similar knives with completely rounded points. Alright, take care!
I want to thank you nutnfancy for showing this knife. I've been looking for a great knife to carry for first responder use for years and never could stray away from my spiderco delica and my benchmade rescue hook 5, till now. As soon as i saw your review this knife, i got in my truck and drove to the biggest knife store in the dfw. The second i held the knife in my hand, i knew i had to have it.
Thanks for your help and keep up the awesome videos
Thanks a bunch for another great review, and great timing too. I've been looking for another EDC, and this fits the bill perfectly for me. Steel could be better, but close enough, so bought one.
just got my 915 Triage in the mail today. it came shaving sharp and no adjustment was needed on the pivot screw, so they've either fixed those problems or the nutnfancy project just picked up lemon
I got my 915 today, Same model as yours. It was sharp enough out of the box to shave my arm hairs. But I have noticed issues on my 42 and 51 balisongs with sharpness.
I had the same issue with blade play, My 915 came really really stiff, so stiff i couldnt get it more than half way open on a flick. Adjusting the pivot I did notice that to get it to a point that is easy to open, there is a tiny, Tiny bit of blade play, like yours.
I got my 915 today, Same model as yours. It was sharp enough out of the box to shave my arm hairs. But I have noticed issues on my 42 and 51 balisongs.
bought a Benchmade 940, Also got a Terrible edge, and after spending 150$ on a knife i was very disappointed, once i got a decent edge and razor sharp, its the best knife i own and i love it. i got the recommendation from you Nutn and don't regret it it all. Thanks for all the reviews
Good to read the update (in the description) that Benchmade is "addressing the sharpness issues with all due haste."
Hope it covers ALL of their models, because that is the #1 problem I have had with Benchmade blades. Both the dull edges and the shallow bevels seem to reflect an unwillingness to pay American labor to put a serious, craftsman-like edge on their knives. Uncool.
It is one major reason why my brand preference has gradually flipped to Spyderco. But it could be flipped back!...
@classof77 PS:-- To be fair, not all Benchmades have poor factory sharpness. One of my Mini Griptilians came with a pretty good edge. (The others did not.) Still, it is, in my personal experience, THE #1 problem with Benchmade as a brand.
PPS: The pocket clip design on the 915 looks excellent.
In the movie underworld, if you look in the scene where she is looking at pictures on the computer, youll see a benchmade safety cutter. I think its the 5 model
Dear Nutnfancy. May I suggest that you send it back to BM and have them get it up to their generally high specification? A follow-up video on speed and their ability to address the issues may be worthwhile?
Thank you for the honesty. Maybe after an update if Benchmade has improved on the centering/lockup and grind I might pick one up as a sheepdog. Thanks for sharing!
@HOBBYISTCORPS i was thinking the same thing, lol maybe take a drimmel to one side of the scale and cut one out? Take the time and make it nice, not just a hack job. Could be possible.
Another great OLD SCHOOL NUTNFANCY knife review! I love it when you do this! I have to admit that when I first saw this knife, it didn't particuarly interest me. After seeing this vid, I want one. I'll probably wait just so I increase the chances of getting one with the bugs worked out.
@ryandoellman87 I have found that wiping my blades down with a cidex wipe or soaking them in cidex( a chemical we use in ems for intubation blades) will sterilize them just fine. i dont use my work knife for anything but work so i dont worry terribly about it. i think a typical solution of clorox water should do the trick as well. i dont know about the autoclave though.
Just recieved mine (in black) a few hours ago. I haven't detected any of the problems mentioned above, in fact, I am really impressed by it. Got it for $109.00 (shipping included) at GP Knives.
Can you recommend a knife like that for regular use in salt water? I'm hoping to volunteer in the RNLI to do sea rescues and would love a rust resistant knife like that with those features.
I just got my orange, black, serrated, 915 Triage in the mail today! My first Benchmade! I'm so happy with it! And at $112, I got plenty of bang for my buck. ;)
Are you still sharpening your blade free hand using the EZE-LAP Diamond Knife Sharpener and Lansky Steel? If so, how are you determining that you have a 21 degree angle and would prefer an 18 degree (I think that is what you stated)? From sight alone or are you measuring it somehow? I was just curious if your method is the same as what you have stated in your previous Free Hand Knife Sharpening video.
Great vid bro! I think this not only has the perfect coloration, but is perfect in it's utility for a "Safety/First Aid kit" knife, but also a USK as well as a bug out kit knife.
Thanks bro for this great tabletop with a boatload of comparisons.
PERFECT knife for SAR Missions! I'm in the Civil Air Patrol , and am getting training for search and rescue missions with my squadron. This knife would be awesome for that POU! thanks for the review!
Very awesome that Benchmade was cool with the honest observations. Not only that but own up to it and moving towards correcting the issue. That goes a long way in my book as a customer. Many companies forget that it is the customer that keeps them in business. Good for you Benchmade. Side note - I want to see how that glass breaker works on a car window : )
@hock4540 I agree, the price point is a downer. I love the roles this knife could play with it's additional features, so hopefully the price drops as competition rises.
That boker looks pretty sick for its price compared to the 915. I mean, its a similar design right down to the deep carry pocket clip. Seems like a much higher value multi-tool/rescue tool.
I really like the looks and utility of this knife.. but $140 just seems about $30 too high. I'll probably try one, but for almost $150 it better come razor sharp, centered and smooth as butter (and no jimping???). Spyderco still has the best bang for buck. Benchmades prices are getting rediculous at almost a $100 - $110 average price level. Where Spyderco is at about $80. And almost $90 for a Griptillian? A ParaMil is only $10 more and twice the knife. Come on Benchmade..
@keesurt with benchmade (and knives in general) you get what you pay for. Buy a $30 gerber or smith and wesson knife and see how it performs to a $100 benchmade or spyderco
I saw that you ground down the inside of your rescue hook 5 to get rid of those sharp corners. Try wrapping it in 550 cord its even more comfortable and more grip and then you have an extra length of 550 cord.
@Sanitarium462 I second that. Since there is a dedicated rescue cutter on it, you can use something like a drop-point or spear as the main blade for even more funtion.
@Sanitarium462 I didn't really like the tip either, but I bought one anyway. After getting it, I found there's plenty of point available to stab something if you had to.
@Sanitarium462 It's purpose built....us EMTs don't want any risk of stabbing our patients during extro, and believe me there are many rescue knives much worse than this (e.g. rescue blur)
@kotetsu131 you know damn well that you should be using trauma shears and not a blade. I know the cowboy style of some of the medics, I was a medic before med school. If you brought a patient to my ER with even a nick on them because you thought you'd be a rockstar with a blade instead of trauma shears, you're director would be in a lot of shit, and shit rolls down hill.
@Sanitarium462 its been 2 weeks since you posted this comment so maybe you've already received replies similar to this (and i apologize if you already have), but...dude you could grind it down to a pointier tip.
Excellent Review. I just feel like benchmade is sooo expensive. What would be sick would be a spyderco assist with the rescue hook incorporated. Btw, I just got a Gurkha Kukri as a college graduation gift, and I pretty much trimmed every tree/shrub in my yard.
Nutn love the review plan on ordering one of these knives soon. I am a firefighter medic. Me and a few guys from work love your view and this knife hits it dead on
@codyaustinpemberton If you look in the other video, he got his boot stuck inside his kilt, fell over and hit his head. Seems like he's ok now, but is in physical therapy now.
Great knife. I love the rescue cutter and glass break on it. That orange color is great. I purchased one with the orange G10 and black serrated blade. After I had it sharpened (very dull out of box) it replaced the CS Recon 1 on my duty belt and off-duty EDC.
Anyone have experience with this model and the 916 model. I like the style of the 916 but can't seem to get a up close look at it anywhere. Honest opinions appreciated... Thanks

Anyhow, if your not as wealthy as Nuttin don't overlook it
brianminkc 8 months ago
The last couple of Benchmades that I have picked up have been dull, with almost no relief edge. mini Grip, Mini Dejavoo, Nitrous Stryker. It really sucks that a company that sells higher priced Knives can't seem to get it right. I would stop buying from them if I didn't like thier designs so much. The Dejavoo and Stryker also have pretty weak Titanium liners. All I can say is that EVERY Spyderco I have bought has come razor sharp. I'm still a Benchmade fan but W.T.F.!!!

Don't run your thumb on it - mine came as-is almost shaving sharp. Now to make it actually shaving sharp...

DontTreadOnME201 8 months ago
yup got one as a gift and the edge is dull out of the box pretty much. Other than that the knife fits the intended use.

I love this knife because it's like a modern version of the Camillus MC-1. But this thing actually works!
stuntmanmike37 9 months ago
Good to read the update (in the description) that Benchmade is "addressing the sharpness issues with all due haste."
Hope it covers ALL of their models, because that is the #1 problem I have had with Benchmade blades. Both the dull edges and the shallow bevels seem to reflect an unwillingness to pay American labor to put a serious, craftsman-like edge on their knives. Uncool.
It is one major reason why my brand preference has gradually flipped to Spyderco. But it could be flipped back!...
classof77 9 months ago 5
@classof77 PS:-- To be fair, not all Benchmades have poor factory sharpness. One of my Mini Griptilians came with a pretty good edge. (The others did not.) Still, it is, in my personal experience, THE #1 problem with Benchmade as a brand.
PPS: The pocket clip design on the 915 looks excellent.
classof77 9 months ago 7
@classof77 I agree with you. I have 3 benchmades and all 3 came with rather dull edges.
But! benchmade is 20 minutes from my house and a co-worker of mine has a brother and a friend that works there!
solved :)

Dear Nutnfancy. May I suggest that you send it back to BM and have them get it up to their generally high specification? A follow-up video on speed and their ability to address the issues may be worthwhile?

cmonsterz 9 months ago
@ryandoellman87 I have found that wiping my blades down with a cidex wipe or soaking them in cidex( a chemical we use in ems for intubation blades) will sterilize them just fine. i dont use my work knife for anything but work so i dont worry terribly about it. i think a typical solution of clorox water should do the trick as well. i dont know about the autoclave though.

Awesome knife and video! I want one.

KNDoperative 9 months ago
Very awesome that Benchmade was cool with the honest observations. Not only that but own up to it and moving towards correcting the issue. That goes a long way in my book as a customer. Many companies forget that it is the customer that keeps them in business. Good for you Benchmade. Side note - I want to see how that glass breaker works on a car window : )

LXbomber 9 months ago
That boker looks pretty sick for its price compared to the 915. I mean, its a similar design right down to the deep carry pocket clip. Seems like a much higher value multi-tool/rescue tool.
eatsleepbike 9 months ago
I really like the looks and utility of this knife.. but $140 just seems about $30 too high. I'll probably try one, but for almost $150 it better come razor sharp, centered and smooth as butter (and no jimping???). Spyderco still has the best bang for buck. Benchmades prices are getting rediculous at almost a $100 - $110 average price level. Where Spyderco is at about $80. And almost $90 for a Griptillian? A ParaMil is only $10 more and twice the knife. Come on Benchmade..
hock4540 9 months ago 2
but does it have to cost $140? benchmade should really come out with mid range counterparts of their knives
keesurt 9 months ago
@keesurt with benchmade (and knives in general) you get what you pay for. Buy a $30 gerber or smith and wesson knife and see how it performs to a $100 benchmade or spyderco
ductape95 9 months ago
@ductape95 Is it 3.33 times better though cause its 3.33 times the cost?
eatsleepbike 9 months ago
@eatsleepbike its about 100 times better. As the price goes higher the trend line gets steeper
ductape95 9 months ago
@ductape95 then see what 30 bucks spyderco can do, not top of the line but it gets the job done big time
keesurt 9 months ago
@keesurt Benchmade is just pricey in general. Do you know of any other knives that have a (good) rescue hook in them as well as a glass breaker?
ductape95 9 months ago
Awesome knife.
I saw that you ground down the inside of your rescue hook 5 to get rid of those sharp corners. Try wrapping it in 550 cord its even more comfortable and more grip and then you have an extra length of 550 cord.
DominicVolante311 9 months ago
Love the new POU point. Grinds can be everything. Another awesome review brother!
VaperSteve1975 9 months ago
The knife has already got a rescue cutter. If it didn't have such a blunted tip I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Sanitarium462 9 months ago 22
@Sanitarium462 that makes sense actually...Why do u need a blunt tip if theres a rescue cutter
So5loW 9 months ago
@Sanitarium462 The blunted tip is a staple of most "rescue" knives.
They are made to be worked close to the skin so a sharp point would snag on skin and clothing.
wormer104 9 months ago
@Sanitarium462 I second that. Since there is a dedicated rescue cutter on it, you can use something like a drop-point or spear as the main blade for even more funtion.
Jesses001 9 months ago
@Sanitarium462 I didn't really like the tip either, but I bought one anyway. After getting it, I found there's plenty of point available to stab something if you had to.
stuntmanmike37 9 months ago
@Sanitarium462 It's purpose built....us EMTs don't want any risk of stabbing our patients during extro, and believe me there are many rescue knives much worse than this (e.g. rescue blur)
kotetsu131 9 months ago 3
@kotetsu131 you know damn well that you should be using trauma shears and not a blade. I know the cowboy style of some of the medics, I was a medic before med school. If you brought a patient to my ER with even a nick on them because you thought you'd be a rockstar with a blade instead of trauma shears, you're director would be in a lot of shit, and shit rolls down hill.
highyieldmed 6 months ago
@Sanitarium462 i think the blunted tip is for clothing removal
