i love how people think Christianity is a religion LOL if people started understanding the concept or religion itself people would be able to isolate the factors that Christianity HAS NO PART IN IT, it is about Jesus who is the son of God our Father, who sent his only begotten son to die for all our sins and to LOVE us, its all about LOVE for one another, ourselves, and GOD alone through the Trinity, its a FAITH NOT a RELIGION!
sorry, but what you're describing is in fact a religion since the very construct of your ideology is based on a belief taken from dogma
Religion: "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs"
@IvanBeSerious No..Its Italy, outside Rome...if you wanna mention Medirerranean areas where its still relatively warm and cool at that time, pick Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Malta.

@lewisgunner1 the later roman armies were nothing compared to the legions of the old empire. but with the empire's resources fading, the lorica segmenta (the classic legionary armor) was simply to expensive to make. also, the roman army at this point was almost completely germanized. most of the troops in this battle are probably of germanic, barbarian decent. as for the color, maybe the red die was to scarce in the western empire.
@lewisgunner1 well, i think its because the red dies that they used were most abundant around the coast of the Mediterranean. besides, this is just a tv series. maybe the colors were switched around in real life. we don't know. also, why do you hate germans? i'm part german, do you hate me?
then were cool as long as u dont dress up like a barbarian and kill romans cause im latin so i have roman ancestors lol jk dude your people were smart
As brilliant a general and statesman as he was, Constantine wasn't a nice man, not by a long shot, he had his own son executed on shaky evidence, he was a very brutal ruler, albeit a Christian one
i noticed something the commander that shot arrows at the other troops he told his troops to attack downhill but what he should have done is fired arrows and force the others to come to him that way they have the advantage of being on higher ground, its just like the battle of gettysburg when the confederates attacked the union up hill and lost tragically
Although I am just getting on here, the historians often are wrong. The history channel itself is pretty bad with getting facts wrong sometimes. I first learned this getting a degree in history. I see them say things contrary to every historian and archeologist who are supposed to be among the best. They have also misquoted Suetonius, Plutarch, Tactius, Dio, etc and can point out where if you are a skeptic. Don't trust something just because it is a supposed authority with a PHD.
@Rahab111222 All you're saying is, that you believe everything that someone's telling you. crossing a river during a battle was always at a great risk, especially if the bridge was made out of wood. Dressed in their chanmail or plate, the soldiers had a hard time swimming, which to add that most soldiers at this time..didnt know how to swim. =Epic failure
Constantine was a dick. He had some crazy dream, an asteroid hit the other army, and then he forced everyone to convert or die. What a dumb ass. Christianity has always, and always will be, an evil influence on humanity. Did you see pagan Romans killing Celts because they worshipped Lugus and not Jupiter? No. Religious persecution is a Christian, or rather a Monotheistic idea. Polytheists didn't do that. Christianity fucked up Rome and then the world.
Chain mail had been around for centuries. The celts invented when rome was still a republic. Chain was used in the auxilary troops and late roman legions. The equipment here is pretty accurate.
@NYDisiple by the time of this, the tactics of rome had changed from the legions of ceaser and the legions of romulus, eg, they where more barbarian by this time. Heck, by the 476s, the army was all barbarian.
Finally I see a documentary that has accurate late roman soldiers, armed in sassanid and germanic influenced weaponry.
The roman army was indeed effective in late times, as it adapted. The early imperial type army could not have fought against the barbarians in the late empire, because the barbarians had advanced alot in weaponry and tactics.
And about the christianization, it's well known that Constantine chose it because it was the only religion that could manipulate and control everybody.
False. The germanic barbarians became better equipped due to their contact with the romans. For example, if in early imperial times good swords and mail use was reduced to chieftans, now most of their heavy infantry used it. Also they used alot more cavalry than before. If you look at the goths you would see they were influenced by Rome, due to the fact they were first it's allies. And if you look at the huns, you would see they developed siege tactics very fast. So Rome needed a change.
And that was in the north. In the east, the sassanids were winning more and more victories, so the roman army had to adapt. The sassanid army was better equipped and diverse then the earlier parthians, and made use of massed levy infantry, heavy infantry, bowmen, light cavalry, cathapracts and war elephants.
If you would see, the romans, due to them fighting more cavalry diverse armies, both in the north and in the east, they became a more cavalry oriented one, and introduced the catafractarii.
Your welcome. Every population is influenced by it's neighbours, and this includes their military. With the romans and it's barbarian enemies it was the same case. Just like it was when the american indians or zulus adopted guns from europeans.
The Huns were known for their expertise on the horses. I've heard that quite a few times they would ride on the side of the horse and still be able to shoot accurately.
The advancements do not have to necessarily be in weaponry.
The military tactics of Late Rome were as efficient as those of the Republic,if not better. Are you crazy? This is where the legendary Catafractarii,Palatinae, and elite legions fit in. The Roman army was still formidable,it just needed able Imperators, which after Theodosius I,would end.
The Gauls pillaged and sacked Rome in 200BC, or was it 300 BC? I can't remember, but it's there, and almost succeeded in 100BC before Marius routed them with a Republican Army. The Romans respected the Gauls, for they were the only ones who could match their strength.

By this stage of the Empire the ealier sqaure shields had been replaced by the rounded type here due to the increasing barbarian (vandal, goth, frank, saxon) influence. Visit Osprey publishing for more info.
also the shields were made of heavier metal to stop the heavier arrows and the square shields made of the old metal would have been too weak and the square shields made of the stronger metal would have been too heavy.
they are not legionaries but Comitaneses. Constantine reformed the military to suit his own ambisions. Comitanese=new legionaries and Limitanei=auxilia
Diocletianus reformed army into two main groups : 1)Comitatenses - mobile field army (no ,,new legionaires'' but old legionaires in new equipment) 2)Limitanei - crew of frontier fortresses and Riparienses - crew of fortresses on rivers. After Constitutio Antoniana (212AD)there were no auxilias.
how can they not make a movie about Augustus, I cant find any documentary movies about Augustus on the internett! How can they not have a video about the first emperor
there's the Rome series on HBO...the second season focuses on the rise of Augustus after Caesar's assassination. Not exactly documentary, but worth a look imo.
The Marxism of Political Correctness taught in our schools, the Media's conditioning of political correctness, and the push for broad unfettered multiculturalism has served to starve our sense of national identity and to fear speaking the truth lest we offend or evoke conflict. It's time to stand tall, strong, and reject the policies and politics of liberalism and defend our democracy.
They most likely did. Most fighting in ancient times was with missiles. It's obvious even from the garbled and stylized accounts of the ancient authors. The hand to hand part was usually of very short duration - if it happened at all. It's just that swordplay looks more exciting on TV (q.v. the ridiculous decapitation in this).
Can people please stop arguing and just watch?!

they are not legionaries but Comitaneses.

After Constitutio Antoniana (212AD)there were no auxilias.

the legionaries of ceasar were probably much more capable of fighting than the comitatenses of the later empire

there's the Rome series on HBO...the second season focuses on the rise of Augustus after Caesar's assassination. Not exactly documentary, but worth a look imo.

Five Stars Great Series
The Marxism of Political Correctness taught in our schools, the Media's conditioning of political correctness, and the push for broad unfettered multiculturalism has served to starve our sense of national identity and to fear speaking the truth lest we offend or evoke conflict. It's time to stand tall, strong, and reject the policies and politics of liberalism and defend our democracy.

I have never understood. If you are killing the enemy at a distance why waste your men in hand-to-hand? Finish them off with the arrows.

They most likely did. Most fighting in ancient times was with missiles. It's obvious even from the garbled and stylized accounts of the ancient authors. The hand to hand part was usually of very short duration - if it happened at all. It's just that swordplay looks more exciting on TV (q.v. the ridiculous decapitation in this).

that bridge should have been way wider and the roads should be like they are nowadays

An excellent shot at 4th century Roman gear! Hardly perfect, but quite good by the typical standards of television reenactment.
Bravo!
