I think he could always do that on the piano he just tryes to play harder now because he thinks his voice is not as good as it use to be but I think its still good
I actually read not too long ago that his voice is different from his much younger years because he had surgery on his vocal cords (in the early 80's, I believe) to remove some polyps or growths. Thus, his voice turned out deeper after the procedure and he lost his ability to sing in falsetto. Tragic indeed, but at least he could still sing, and extremely well, afterward surgery.
Is not really an octave lower. The tone quality of his voice has changed and is now deeper, but he still sings it in the same octave just with a different kind of voice. Of his entire repertoire he only had to change the key of 2 songs in order to still sing them. Billy Joel, for instance, has changed the key of most of his songs, if not all (even those he wrote in the 90's). Don't get me wrong, I love Billy Joel as well.
i love the part he improvises!!!! AMAZING

If it lost something in the voice
it has won it amply in the piano
but that magic of transporting my imagination
it continues as patent as before

It's too bad our voices get deeper as we age. He's singing it a full octave lower.
