I see this great cabaletta as a sort of accusation against war and hatred, and I think the soprano must express even disgust when she sings the vocal lines. Her singing is truly marvelous, a rare kind of voice adequate to these Verdi roles in our days. However, I expected more fire and "realism" from her acting. Anyway, what a powerful music this is, especially if sung very well like here.
This is to me, the most difficult of all the Verdi cabalettas... the repeated, ascending scales to High B's.. and then she interpolates a high D at the end.. i would think she would be totally exhausted.
I love Sass in this aria.. too.. But a few others have attempted it, and normally it sounds like screaming, rather than singing. This is very good.
You are correct.. I listened to both versions, and then went back to listen and made this incorrect comment.. and realized it was in the Naples versison.. Its an exciting aria, however,I think the role is a voice killer.. Kinda like Nabucco.
@kgarmaker123 A more lyric soprano that have recorded the role of Giselda would be Deutekom. I like it. It offers more ease in the high tessitura passages.
SHE LOST HER VOICE, WHAT A PITY, SHE WAS GOOD AT THE BEGINING OD 2000.

Just wonderful. Just went to see her in Macerata in this role and she was fabulous.

sorry but she didn't interpolate any D here. She does it in the other Naples live.

@kgarmaker123 I can imagine Sass at her best would have given an absolutely superb rendition of this. Off to search for one...!
