I doubt you would get more leverage by having both hands on one side of the wheel then having one on the left and the other at 1-2-3 a clock on the right.
Man, what a wrestling match with that steering wheel! Lol That was an amazing vid, thanks for posting! Wish I could drive one around the track that fast.
Turning the wheel like that was probably how it was done back in the 60's. And if I built a car like this from scratch, I don't know if I'd have the guts to race it. Track day for sure, but racing it, not so sure. Well done to your dad, would love one of these.
@wsbygt Steering is very heavy and the driver needs the leverage. There are newer uprights available for this car that makes it less of a handful but I'm not sure if they are homologated for this class of racing.
Awesome video and the sound!! To all the haters remember this thing is 1960's technology. I think he's doing well to stay anywhere near sports cars 40 years newer.
I agree with you, Zedman260. If the new GT40s are anything like the originals, they weren't the easiest machines to drive. I think he did quite well. He did a lot of heads up driving. Reality is a whole lot faster than Gran Turismo. It just happens to be my favorite SIM game, too. I am too old and too poor to have the kind of fun these guys are having.
Alot of these young kids that think the world was created when they were born and driving these cars is as easy as a plastic steering wheel clamped to a computer desk playing Gran Tourismo..Post a video of yourself driving a GT40 around a "real" track and lets see....
First, thanks for sharing your on-track experience with us.
Second, all you guys criticising his style, etc. are overlooking one thing: The driver of that GT3 looped his ride at Doohan corner right at the end in what looked to be a bit of oil on the track. Our host driver here managed to keep his ride on the track when he went through that same spot.
Good job, mate, and good on ya' for having a go in that awesome piece of history, the mighty GT 40!
What a glorious car, and what a magnificent sound. i dont see why people are moaning at his style, he's clearly doing a good job and seems in control almost all the time
Umm im pretty sure the point of this video is to show rare modern footage in car of a gt 40 racing, not to comment on what your probably unfounded opinion of his driving style is. Its pretty clear the car has heavy steering by the feedback he's getting through it, so give it over. Awesome car, if i could choose just one car to drive around a track, any one, it would be this.
Everyone has their own style; post a video of your own style driving your own supercar so we can comment on your technique...You try keeping up with a GT3 Porsche with your riced up Honda.
Thanks acobra302 and Zedman260, atleast somebody understands lol. I'll hopefully have a new video posted shortly after the 18th of October as that is Ross' last race meeting for the year (Philip Island again!). It's hard competition atm, Maserati's I think are dominating the class and the GT40's not running the hot motor atm. Also 2nd gear syncro has gone, so it's going to be a challenge. Stay tuned, and thanks again to the viewers.
Well said Viper; they think it's as easy as sitting in front of a computer screen with a steering wheel clamped to the desk! Everyone has there own comfortable technique..He's doing a fantastic job of keeping up with GT3 Porsche's and Aston Martins etc in the state champs..Excellent effort!!Like to see them do better; post it on youtube!
Thanks to the people who have appreciated this video. To the rest of you, the keyboard warriors, the kids on school holidays, the dreamers who think they can do better, etc etc.. Why don't you have a think about the possibility that maybe this isn't an easy car to drive! No power steering, low ratio steering rack, very wide slick tyres and high speeds all account for heavy steering. My dad, Ross Nicol, built this car from the ground up and races it. He's 57 this year, so credit where it's due.
forza1949.... look up Jean Alesi. Does he hold the wheel like a 16 year old girl? 10 and 2 is a grip that a lot of pros go for. Its a matter of perference.
Appalling way to drive a race car - your not on your way to tescos! You have no control with your hands in those positions, if your not strong enough get down the gym before you end up in a big ball of snot!!
Nice sound, bad display of race car driving. Holds the steering wheel like my mum use to in our kombi, and all those mid corner pokes of the throttle, use the cars inertia into the corner, let the car run out a bit, than ease the throttle wide open, in one nice flowing move. At least not as bad as the guy in front, OMG the back slid, what do I do!
I doubt you would get more leverage by having both hands on one side of the wheel then having one on the left and the other at 1-2-3 a clock on the right.

Guy holds the wheel like a vw beetle driving highschool girl. Probably gets the same results as a highschool girl on the track.

HI!first of all thx.for sharing.
Put aside your featuring a perfect Alesi like
grip on the wheel,I'm amazed about the heavy charge you have to apply in cornering....
two hands in an old truck steering style.
Ok,no powersteering, but is it actually so heavy ?
I haven't seen anything similar in GT40 camera
car postings, not even in a vintage on board
camera footage.
