I've been born again 8 years now, and I've seen soooo many people in churches just going through the motions. Its really sad. They are "going to Church" and doing "Religion". Too many churches are private social clubs. How many will say "Didn't I go to church every sunday", and "Didn't I give offerings in the collection plate" ? And Jesus will reply : Mat 7:23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me

I know - it's so sad. It's not as common where I live, but here they're all Catholics, and they all go to church occasionally, or every Sunday, depending on who they are. And they don't understand that it's a relationship with Jesus, not a place you gp to occasionally.

Merely "going through the motions" (doing [whatever] without love for God or desire to please Him) vs. doing more than just "going through the motions" (doing what you do because you love God and want to please Him) is the difference. The motive of your heart is important. While the only ones who truly know your heart are you and God without a motive to please God you could destroy an opportunity to point others to Jesus and miss out on touching lives with His love.

What is the stereotypical Christian? Is "going through the motions" such a bad thing? The best -maybe i should say strongest- Christians i know live a life of set-in-stone consistency. They go to church at the same time and same days every week. They have a set time everyday for prayer and the reading of soul edifying material. And, consistanly, they examine their souls to see if there is any unwanted thing.

To love God we must practice our faith, which means going through the motions.

Your critique of "going through the motions" is not based on the commonly accepted cliche. "To go through the motions" is to merely do something for the sake of doing it. That is going to church without listening, reading your Bible without learning, singing a praise song without worshipping. That is what is meant. There is nothing wrong with the motion or activity of one's daily routine.  When one's life becomes a compilation of habits without purpose then God ceases to be praised.

I was merely commenting on what rayOFsunshine59 said. I do understand what the song is saying about "going through the motions," and that it is not enough to be just a "Sunday Christian." At the same time, though, I think that the song, while maybe not being the intention, promotes emotionalism - a trap commonly fallen in to now days. As a result, Christianity is reduced to a warm fuzzy feeling in the chest; instead of a discipline that needs to be practiced in order to be an actual Christian.

I don't know if anyone else has responded to you, but this is what I think it means... It's easy to do what you know you should without putting your heart into what you are doing. It's good to do things for God like reading the Bible or going to church, but God wants all these things to be done out of love and passion for God...like it's springing out of a relationship with Him rather than just something you do because you know you should (just going through the motions).

I'm glad that I could help. When I say "springing out of a relationship with Him" (by "Him" I mean "God") To start a relationship with God you have to understand how much you need Him. No one is good enough to get to Heaven without accepting His free gift...Salvation. God loved us so much that He sent his Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for our sins. Jesus rose from the grave and now when we ask Him to forgive us, He does, and a relationship with Him begins and His spirit lives inside us...

His spirit that lives in us helps us see things differently. As we build this relationship with Him by talking to Him and reading the letter He left us...the Bible...we come to understand how much He loves us. Then it's just like when someone loves you and you want to do good things for them. Because God loves us so much, rather than doing things because we think we should or someone told us to or because we are trying to please people or meet someone's standards, we do them out of love...

Just like water springs out of the side of a mountain, love springs from a relationship with Christ...It's almost like you can't help but become passionate about loving God and others the closer you get to Him. Almost nothing worked out in my life the way I planned it and the only one I stressed out was me. :) The big thing I wish I would have done more was really see and love people more. OMG i really needed that. i think what my problem was i have been born a christian so i took for granted that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins and i was trying to hard to please God (as in even when i fell, i felt ashamed) but then i would realize that God loves me. hmm i will keep this in heart and will work on my relationship. Really its doing everything that everyone else does like everyone does the basic's of life as christians and as none christians. As the christian the basic's is go to church read the Bible etc. Everyone does that. But someday were all going to look back and wonder.. what if i had given everything what if i had put my WHOLE heart into it. Would things be different.
