    There's punk for you.

  • Guys come and see this! Theres this video on You Tube that nobody's seen apparently. Its called "Gang of Souls" its about poetry.

It has: William Burrows, Allan Guinsburg, Henry Rollins, Lidia Lunch, Richard Hell, Mariane Faithful, Don Giono and some others.

  • @desasterz Thank you. Thank you so much for sharing. Ginsberg is very inspirational for me and to find this is a gem.

  • what about Joy Division?

  • @thomasjakeprice technically joy division is alternative rock but ian curtis' stage prescence with his unique- 'dancing?' is very much PUNK.<3

  • i dont think any of us are punks anymore, i think there are the rich, poor, even poorer, and us the I TRUTHFULLY DONT GIVE A FLYING SHIT

  • mc5 is a kick ass band, and lou reed is the godfather of psychedelic rock. Stooges, and ramones are the reason punk lives today. PUNK def: a rock genre with deliberately offensive lyrics expressing anger and social alienation; in part a reaction against progressive rock. that said, PUNK ROCK a subculture of retrospective ;( ☮

  • I rep punk. I sport studded leather and a green mohawk. The culture today feels but a manufactured fragment of it's past. It seems as though the idea of being ''different'' sells more than it's intentions. My Dressing of the part comes out of respect for the scene, and to anyone identifying with Punk. The spontaneous closure that's felt is truly worth any tirade.

  • I dont know how you can say something is outdated and have a respect for what you're doing at the moment.

  • Bono's not in charge.

  • I hate the "What are you rebelling against"-"What you got?" thing. Thats what they say about us. Its not true, its not an impulse, theres nothing wrong with us, we're not animals, we are angery because we no what they already Got!

  • 60's GARAGE FUZZ!!!...KNOW YOUR ROOTS !

  • thumbs up if your watchin because of Professor Rhoden's Youth Culture Class!

  • @sgsgwannabe Lol! Yes!!

  • Doesn't really matter where it comes from true fucking punk was done and transmited by Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Clash, etc.

  • The documentary have great interviews and material (obviously always many bands not appear or even mention), the coments of Henry make it entertaining, i think is more interesting the anti establishment theme and the "punk" attitude before the music and the labels of the industry, I like nirvana but is too much overvalued, all that post 95 mtv neometal, neopunk wathever, is one cause why there (usa) have a absurd and ridiculous pop rap and rock industry.

    Sorry my caca English.

  • We put no confidence in the flesh.Although I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh. If anyone has any reason for confidence in the flesh,I have more;circomsized on the 8th day,of the people of Israel, from the tribe of Benjamin,a hebrew of hebrews as to the law,a zelous Pharisee,as to righteousness under the law, blameless.Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus Christ. I now count all of those things as rubbish (one trans says "Shit") -Philipi'3

  • But if I brothers still preach circumcision, why am I still being percecuted? In that case the offence of the cross has been removed. I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves.

For you were called to freedom brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but thru love, serve one another. For the whole law is resumed in one word, "Love your neighbour as yourself."

    -Paul in Gallatians 5

  • hast du bock, den zweiten teil nochmal hochzuladen? ;)

  • With respect mate, that's a fairly significant difference.

  • 3:01 THATS WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT PUNX THATE HATE HIPPIES ARE STUPID CAUSE IF U OPEN YOUR EYES THERE EXACLY THE SAM ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE MUSIC AND THE ATITTUDE

  • thanks for posting!

  • @baleariclife89 oh so punk!!!

  • Humble John Cale!

IMO no other musician can claim to have had a bigger influence on the sound of Punk and Alternative music than him. Being the main force of the Velvets sound, producing debuts by The Stooges, Modern Lovers and Patti Smith, creating Nico´s 2 proto-goth LP´s and recording proto-industrial music in the 1960´s he has had his fingerprints almost all over the place.

I just hope someday a larger public will acknowledge this man´s musical genius towards modern music.

  • I've not finished the vid or read the comments, I just wanna say that I grew up punk, I grew up on city streets n me n my comrades were all against wtf ever pushed us (ie laws, rules n who administered them). I am no longer a punk but my soul still is. I say if u see sumthin wrong FIGHT IT in w/e way you can, fuck it all they can't rule you!!!

  • Does anyone know any other good documentaries on punk?

  • Kurt Cobain and Nirvana were fucking awesome whether you want to call him/them punk or not.

  • @baleariclife89 And you are oh-so punk arguing what is and is not punk on youtube!

  • really they gave andy warhole credit? really?

  • @punkhippe Andy Warhol is responsible for assembling and distributing The Velvet Underground. So yeah. He gets credit.

  • what is the song being played at 3:35 called I must know?

  • @TylerLav118118 Really? It's Purple Haze by Hendrix

  • Yep, life minus F equals Lie. It's like Life without FE, which stands for Fuck the Establsishment!

  • 60's Garage is where the seeds for punk were truly planted. Not groups like "The Stooges" "The MC5" "NY Dolls" etc. They mention the 60's garage genre in this film, but not enough in my opinion. I think in all honesty, many kids today aren't even aware of that music. Go listen to stuff like "Back from the Grave", "Teenage Shutdown". "Randy Alvey & The Green Fuz" "The Swamp Rats", this is all PRE-punk by at least 8-9 years. Cruder and better in my opinion than any of that 70's crap!

  • @SixtiesGarageTube

Why thank you for educating this teenager looking for something awesome!

  • @SixtiesGarageTube Eh, it's too bad you had to say, "that 70's crap". It sort of undermines everything else you said. But sounds cool, I'll be sure to check that stuff out.

  • @SixtiesGarageTube what is your problem? im not saying that you are not right about the 60's garage influence on punk. but ffs you dont need to bash the 70's bands. at least a lot of bands from that era did something relevant and turn a lot of people on it. and yes a lot of people realize that some bands with ideals sold out...but cmon you dont need to take them down. and the way you are saying that, you sound like a hipster. all we got to do is to enjoy nice music despite the year.

  • @SixtiesGarageTube The point is these bands are mentioned because they made a change the bands you mentioned dint and they are forgotten

  • Comment removed

  • @SixtiesGarageTube

e has WOW!how bigoted and arrogant is that!Who are you, to write this bullshit? Stooges, MC 5 and especially New York Dolls, the Ramones, Blondie and Legs McNeill, founder of the legendary "PUNK-Magazine, gave the whole thing name, a lifestyle and a soul. The history of "PUNK" founded it's roots in New York City and the legendary CBGBs club and owner Hilly Kristal.

  • @ 60's Garage is just as a very important influence! But the Soul of Punk was born when Hilly Kristal opened the doors for that sound, that gave this empty phrase"PUNK" a voice and a heart."Punk changed the whole world and became and will stay the world's biggest and strongest subculture movement, supported by freaks all over the world, united through the voice, the heart and the soul of Punk: Music!

  • @ViviViolent I am sorry Bro but honestly you kind of downed it a bit. The way i was growing up hearing the Teenage Shutdown and the garage days, punk isnt about magazines, lifestyles, or apperance. Punk is nothing more than a belief, and thats why they went hardcore in a 1 minute song to get that message through, look at Sham 69 back in the day, Rip Off, enough said. AND THOSE GUYS DID IT WEARING NOTHING BUT POOR ENGLISH CLOTHS and they were more punk because of the shyt they said.

  • I really think that punk 77 was really innocent... american hardcore was the real deal

  • why the subtitles in german??

  • Rollins is the MAN

  • The song at 3:08. I feel like I should know it.

  • I didn't recognize John Cale in this documentary. With the bleached blond slightly spiky hair and the deep tan he looks strangely different.

  • what song is it in 5:26?

  • @lirannine Venus in Furs by the Velvet Underground.

  • almost 88000 views maybe not alot of views like some pop artist or rapers but makes me feel like theres people that still think outhere and dont need television tell them wat they like or do

  • @thedudefromthehood Agreed. I hate when people label him as "Grunge". Cobain truly was the last punk rocker.

  • @DILLONSHWING I agree, man grunge is not even a real genre. Its just a mixture between Punk and Metal. Look at all the "grunge" bands, they are all Punk (Nirvana, Melvins, Mudhoney) and Metal (Soundgarden, Alice in Chains etc...)

  • @thedudefromthehood Right on man. I've always felt that way but people just like to label shit that they dont know anything about.

  • whats the song in 5:26

  • Wow John Cale has aged well. too bad about Mick Jones, he sure didn't

  • whats the song in the beging?

  • @lirannine - Know Your Rights - The Clash from the Combat Rock Album

  • garage 60's the true germ of the punk

  • @climenex Punk gems go all the way back to the old testament if you take the time to look. Theres some in Ecclesiastes, Nehemiah chapter 13. And Jesus was punk a lot of the time. I think Blues artists were Bible reading christians, I'm not sure though, does anyone know please?

  • At first I thought: Oh it's gonna be green day and shit... then i saw rollins, bad brains, the pistols, the clash and Jello biafra and watched the WHOLE THING! Finally, a true and good documentary about punk. :D

  • from the minute i heard an saw henry rollins, I knew I was gonna watch the whole thing

  • what is the diffrence between a punk and a punk rocker?

  • @antimainstreampop leave that question at my channel and ill make a vid of it

  • I've met punks...some "punks" too...lol...the attitude..OMG...the annoying opinionated attitude! Sorry. If you read this...YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! FUCK YOU!

  • it's funny how some say the hippies were the exact same as the punks, yet others say they were the opposite. so what if hippies rebelled too? the punks were more about actually putting something out there whereas the hippies were more about "hey, let's get high and shag".

  • now , do anybody understand why nowadays punx and co are 90% (and I was good..) posers? I mean this isn't (wasn't) just a genre u play that easy.this's not just music is like that guy here, crankenstyne says there's a very large gap between punk-rock and punk-rocker just think about it.. before it's too late (or before some very very angry guy will beat you so hard you forget when he started...shit happens)

  • Legs has the best lines in this.

  • <3 iggy and the stooges, bad brains and legs mcneil

  • Ya know I punk would be bigger if the definition wasn't narrow and abstract.....

  • People always say punk rock has gone mainstream, but all the mainstream punk bands bands are pop punk, i'll believe punks gone mainstream when the other subgenres become more popular

  • I love this documentary so much. I watched this many years ago when I was a pre-teen and learned so much about the scene and found out about many new bands, many of which are now my favorites. My only gripe with the film is there not a single mention of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. Monumental band in influence, but nowhere to be found here. Such a shame. they rarely get the recognition they deserve

  • America is PuNk !!!! LONG LIVE PUNK ROCK!!

  • I don't know why but I hate Henry Rollin he's such a self-important wannabe douche bag.

  • Whats the name of the song at 1:05

  • @twistoffate314 Know your rights by the clash

  • There is nothing more pathetic than an old punk

  • D A M N . A 50$ DVD N I LOSTED IT

THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD MAN. . . .

  • i sorta hate this documentary.

  • this is so cool \m/

  • @Greenfuzz138 Yeah, watched it today and was like, "Wow that was awesome! ... Wait, where the fuck were the misfits!?"

  • when john cale was talking all i could think about was the song "the gift" by VU

  • DESTROY!

  • I LIKE THE TWO CULTURES PUNK AND HIPPIES

I AM MORE HIPPIE THAN ROCKER

THE HIPPIES ARE THE DESCENDENT OF ROCKERS

I MISS THE OLD TIMES THE OLD MUSIC

    WAS THE BESTS

    THANKS FOR UP THIS DOCUMENTARY

    ROCK NOT DEAD!!!

  • @DIZTOMAK bro im exactly like that

  • this is wrong on so many levels even about the hippies and ill tell you why simply because this is a fucking a commercial documentary sense when the fuck was nirvana punk rock and as far as iv seen and known that all us punks can agree that this whole mc5 bullshit is no better then cock rock fuck this documentary

  • @Wonder138 not everyone agrees that mc5 is no better than cock rock.only idiots like you think that because you dont know what your saying

  • @louiscfc93 here here , MC5 were rocking in their era , its all based in politics and social commentary , TAKE THAT AWAY from punk.... PUNK DEAD , simple fact.

sorry to those boo hooers who want to know about the singer dead relationships, or how much life sucks since he had to get a VISA credit card, or how his mama made him clean his room.

jeez i want to hear punk RANT on about how cops beat them down and next coming revolution, the social uprising and PURE FUCKING FURY they have.

  • @RalphMarx thats like saying you only want to hear black metal because of the church burnings.its much more interesting to hear about how things began and about individual people rather than the violence things cause

  • @RalphMarx

Sadly they were usually all talk. They might have had legitimate political views or complaints against authority... but all they did was write songs about it, they never accomplished anything of consequence.

  • Wipe out the hippies? LOL

  • FUCK THIS ! .|.

  • list the songs pls.

  • wat is the song called at 8:33?

  • Punk was garage rock, raw, immediate, energetic. Because it was so basic it allowed people who would not have a voice to express themselves, and became a vehicle (in England especially) to express anger about poor conditions. But punk music is not the emotions being expressed through it. That's where the confusion happens, between the music and the emotions. That's the difference between NY punk and the British version, and why the Ramones for example were initially not seen as a "punk" band.

  • I like loud angry fast music, but i dont like a lot of punk music.the ramones and sex pistols are great, but others like circle jerks and black flag and dead kennedys, and bad brains are just ok to me.flipper is cool but i dont know if theyre considered punk.i just have punk on my i-pod cause i used to work out and listen to it.id rather listen to the wipers or queens of the stone age than most punk.

  • Punk rock is merely a return to basics in rock. It was a reaction against late 60s and 70s excess in rock music, a return to rebellious rock roots. That's it. All the rest, the fashion, confrontational attitude, anti-commerciality (which is a complete joke), is just garnish. Later on, second and third wave poser punks confused the symptom with the cause.

  • @ihasch Unfortunately, the older rock-a-billy rockers would have said about most punks that "these boys can't play". Rollins is right. The punks were the biggest fascists around. They thought that what they did was THE last word on music, which is laughable. But, I do like what they did. But only to a point.

  • fucking black flag but no misfits >.>

  • just keep playing ,support the scene ,do what you want and dont pretend to be someone else... Fuck you from Slovakia ;-D

  • @crankenstyne

Wow. Never even thought about that. Thx alot for the detailed definition of punk.

  • @kronoz0011 -You posted 80 minutes of supposed punk rock experts trying to explain what punk rock is, and they never did sum up a detailed definition of punk in a few sentences. I gave it a shot, took 8 or 10 posts to say most of what I had to say- which is basically exactly what is said in this documentary. But please don't try and take 1 out of the 8 or 10 posts it took me to explain myself and call it my 'detailed definition of punk' to try and make yourself look funny or smart.

  • @crankenstyne what must one do to become a punk rock punk rocker?

  • @crankenstyne so logical contradictions are punk rock? LOL!

  • @crankenstyne that was confusing i guess am not punk rock or punk rocker haha

  • @crankenstyne too bad you have to be punk rock to be a punk rocker

  • grassvalley is correct about punk being complex and difficult to explain, but all that about political change and not being teenage or moronic is wrong . Punk CAN be a 'movement for political change', but it doesn't have to be. Plenty of good punk bands never wrote a single socially conscience song. The fucking Ramones are arguably the inventors of punk rock and sing about the joys of being brain dead, hitting kids w/ bats, and sniffing glue. They made a career off teenage & moronic.

  • punk is musical freedom. lyrical expression. not how you dress. if we all dressed like what music we listen to, we'd all be more divided than we already are.

  • What I really dont like about this overall well done and researched documentary is the unexplainable omission of the whole American 80s hardcore punk scene. I mean, they show Limp Bizkit and Blink 182 and they skip Bad Religion, Social Distortion, NOFX, Descendents and the Misfits? YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME MAN

  • id say punk as a music put me on to many political ideas as a young person . it also put me in touch with black culture in england, which living in a northern mining town ,i knew nothing about . i also had a lot of fun watching bands up and down the country, and meeting many people a long the way . punk is different to each indivdual and has many out lets . was diego marradona more punk than the sex pistols ,think about that one . the arguement will continue which is good.

  • Ah fuck. Punk sold out a long time ago. Lydon, pop, Idol etc..... They all went for the big bucks. It changed nothing.

  • @katoness not necessarily in the large scheme of punk yes but in the idealism of punk rock no because as soon as they went for the money they left the punk scene but if u think about local underground punk bands wherever you are they haven't sold out whether be it they haven't got the chance to sell out or they told the big major labels FUCK OFF

  • @colen147 yeah I agree with what you are saying. The point I was making was that those that have become sucessful have just become part of the establishment, when they was suppose to be aganist it. Fucking hypocrites!

  • @colen147 yeah finnally someone other than my close friends a gree with me on that u seem pretty chill though

  • john cale reminds me of eric burdon

    JON

  • @Falkowski82

for both I have the highest respect. Two of a very rare breed of artists (have to also include Ray Davies here) which kept to their principles of providing honest music instead of going for the big bucks.

  • wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How many punks does it take to change a lightbulb? None, punks never changed anything.

  • @TheSandman987 actually they changed the whole atitude towards being in a band.they made you think that you could do it to.even if you couldnt they gave you the idea that you and your mates could form a band and be popular

  • @TheSandman987

What genre of music really changed anything? Look around...... what do you see?

  • @GilbertSyndrome plenty genres helped change world. rock, rap to name few.

  • @Lonao

It changed the way we view music and the industry, but as for poitics.....that'll never change no matter who pens a song about it.

  • @GilbertSyndrome i didnt say music itself changed anything. Music reflects views of people, it's mirror of our society, well at least part of society. Punk had it's moments.

  • @Lonao

I see what you're getting at, its just that punk was supposed to change a lot of things but like many other genre's before it, it didn't change much. Its the times that change.

  • @GilbertSyndrome jes and no, it did affect the way we see the world, to some degree. How exactly can politics be changed? Most polics are populist and do anything to get votes. If americans wanted universal healthcare republicans would be first try to create it.

  • @Lonao

There's a difference between looking at the world and changing it.

  • dude black fag BUT NOT THE MISFITS

  • I hate it when people talk about "The youth should upset the older generation" because that's pointless! What punks do tend to upset people. "Their just meant to upset people" is what I call Adult Imaturity.

  • @desasterz if you didnt notice lately most music genres upst older generation. Rock, metal, punk, rap and what else.

  • We all know the problem is greed and shame. "we're trying to make money" "look how fierd up you get about it you weirdo"

  • I have a song about boy bands called "freedom of the same opinion", a song about divorce called "Hey mother", a song about drugs called "Cheated World", a song about politeness called "kik the walls down, (some of us don't know the way around)" a song about world of wartcraft and the like mackers called "Designer dealer" a song about how people look for girlfriends called "the checklist" a song about teenagers relationship with their parence called "And they named it adolecence"

  • Holy shit people, Emo was a joke. Look up "Ian Mackaye emocore is stupid"..it's on youtube.

  • punk not dead!

  • Thi documentary is simply amazing. It embodies the attitude that means punk. I can't thank you enough for posting it!

  • Henry! :3

  • how can there be a history punk, done by americans?

Its like buying and indian cook book written by a jamaican.

  • Im sorry to say that most of this shit is not punk. The rebellious part is but this music is not punk rock

  • Metal has nothing on this ..

  • punk rock dosnt have a specific sound. its the attitude and the ethics that make you a punk

  • thanks for the upload-I used to watch this all the time on IFC!

  • Umm they left out the misfits :/ sucks

    but over all fuck itt!!!!!!!!

  • I'm sorry but I think the whole premise of being a hippie is going over your head. Peace and Love? No, sorry. Punk is about being alone, being unique, not having a clique and just dealing with it and really not giving a fuck. Punk was against any and all establishment and was fueled by fear and anger. The new york dolls? Yeah, they're just as punk as Avril lavigne. Probably had a corporate team just as large too.

    *Rolls eyes*

  • The New York Dolls had exactly the same "corporate team" as The Sex Pistols. Malcolm McLaren. The punks looked up to the Dolls because they were torn apart by the mainstream, something they related strongly to.

I think what the documentary implies is that hippies were more akin to "pastoral punks". They were also anti-establishment, but instead of corrupting the system, they escaped it by actively creating their own communities.

  • Yes, absolutely. I mean, ultimately, even a chaotic system is still just a system. It makes more sense the more I think it over because chaotic systems are highly sensitive to initial variables. What could be more so than the Punk movement?

  • I would argue that hippies and punks are quite different as well as similar. The main difference is the destruction of punk. Mathematically speaking, I'd describe punks as chaos theorists and hippies as network theorists (with corporate or mainstream types represented by game theory). Similar causes but totally different approaches.

  • For me the biggest difference between the two is the environment which they chose. Hippies flourished in small, self-made communities on the skirts of bigger cities, while punk scenes arose in thick downtown areas. The hippies were equally capable of destruction and "fear and anger" as notespompon said - the hippie movement did, after all, lead to numerous terrorist and militant student organizations like the Weather Underground, as well as the Manson killings.

  • Astute observation and one that too often goes overlooked in the rush to characterize hippies as free love peaceniks.

  • The hippies were the real punks..

    ... This documentary is shit.

  • kill all those retard flower children

  • hippies are stupid weed smoking motherfuckers... fuck 'em
