@RoyHess666 The way it's handled varies from level to level. In this case, as Engy says, there's a timer from when you hit the button. You can even hit the button then quickly back off the elevator and let it rise without you (amusingly letting you see the untextured floor underneath) and the level will still end.
In the last part, where you enter the lift, can't you just jump up to the changelevel trigger to save another second?

Perhaps it's the same here, but if you're right and the changelevel is timed... then forget about it :)
