Scrolling below,it's strange to recall that I had a conversation with Betty Newsinger, if it's the same one, just a few months before she passed away. :(
@jhillst "Performed and recorded at Mill House, the home and recording facility owned by record producer Gus Dudgeon". This and the videos of Secret Mission, Winter Tree etc are available as a 'bonus' video CD on the Scheherazade Remaster which came out in 2010.
Ephillpback... I went to Sellersville Theatre in PA to see Annie play with Jan Close. Great show. I hope the one with the newly recreated Renaissance in CT on their New 2011 Tour is even 1/2 as satisfying.
can you imagine Annie having and using 5 octaves? We would all shatter like 1000s of broken windows. Maybe it was a typing error 10 years ago or something. love betty
@Jim382 Hello my friend - apparently this is about to be sorted - new release coming up - Combined re-release of Scheherazde + Video footage of Studio recordings of various songs which includes Forever Changing ,Carpet of the sun and others I believe
I would say more jazz-rocky stuff than hard rock. He plays a little more hard rock-ish keyboards on Jekyll and Hyde and Winter Tree (I am thinking Geddy Lee, again Rush do get called prog, but on the hard rock side of it). They were a bit unlucky to get paired to Annie :D, by themselves they were pretty good musicians, just not one-in-a-million.
I can't wait...have tickets to see them 10/14 in Harrisburg, PA.....4th time I've seen Annie since college... my first introduction to Renaissance in the '70s
I'm looking forward to seeing them in Rochester next month, 10/8! I saw them numerous times in the late 70's and early80's. Their music is full of passion...nothing like it today!
I'm sure that you will enjoy it - but don't expect any orchestral arrangements - ala old Renaissance - I saw them at the Astoria London a few years back - First song played was Carpet Of the Sun - tears were rolling down my cheeks !!!!!
That's really neat! I think you'd have to be a robot to not have that kind of reaction at one of their concerts! I saw them back in the late 70's, in Seattle, and it was the experience of my lifetime!!
I just love the crystal clarity of Annie's voice; there are no unpleasant undertones and you can hear every word. She hits the high notes with complete accuracy and then slides down with a sure touch. It's both beautiful and amazing.
The words of Betty Newsinger carry a lot of weight but I have measured Annie's range to be at least above 3 octaves on the other hand? E3 to G6 (on Ashes are Burning live versions). I have never actually heard 5 octaves, so I am with you on that.
Please somebody tell me where is John Tout????!!!! this group was fantastic ..I saw them live once in Brunel University, Uxbridge ,London. what a great concert was that.. together with Caravan.. a fantastic evening..
Funny how Sarah McLachlan sort of emulated that angelic voice... And Jon Camp (Bass) is perhaps one of the most under-rated bassist.. His runs sometimes can give Chris Squire a bit of a run for his greatness...
Female singers in many of today's music videos feel they have to prance around in skimpy clothing to be attractive.
All Annie needs to do is to just stand there and sing in that heavenly voice of hers. In doing so, she exudes more warmth and sensuality than any of them.
Saw them a few times in the 70's and saw annie a few years ago in Pa, brings me back to a much simpler time in life, its a shame we all gotta get old.
where did you find such gold, its been over 30 years, these songs bring me back to a much simpler time, saw them several times in NJ and NY, and one saw annie play up in Pa, its a dam shame we all gotta get old!
Awesome voice! Amy lee from evanescence has a very similar sound, but with a low range instead of that beautiful hi end. If anyone has the clip for 'ashes are burning', I would be young again, if only for 9:15! thanks for these clips, they are a slice of life!
annie is alive and well and living in pennsylvania. i saw renaissance 3 times in the late 70's, and have seen annie in concert twice in the past 3-4 years. i'm happy to say her voice is still as amazing as it ever was. i was even lucky enough to speak with her and have her autograph some pics for me!! she is priceless!!! considering that she is now over 60, how much longer can we hope that she will still be performing???
Excellent version of this song. One of my favorite bands ever. Should have much more recognition than they got. Annie has one of the best female voices I've heard. So much talent in this band. Such a pity they were so overlooked. Thank God there was one station in Chicago that played them a lot. Now, if I can just find a video of "The Flood at Lyons", I'll be ecstatic.
beautiful song from a beautiful group- I think they were highly overlooked as a progressive band, but many lead vocalists of the 70's & 80's were fans of Annie Haslam, and acknowledged "Renaissance" as an influence on them.
Thank you so much for the videos. My brother and I saw them in Chicago in the late 70's. They were always one of my bro's fav bands. He sadly was killed in Sept of '06 in a mountain climbing accident in California in Kings Canyon. He was a great lover of Prog rock and San Jose Sharks Hockey.
Thank you so much for the Renaissance videos. I have been a fan of theirs forever and I saw them 3 times in concert. After the concert in Dallas in 1978 I got to shake their hands.
An alternative version from the album. Awesome. I love Azure d'Or, it's their last great record before they tried to sound like a bookish version of The Thompson Twins.
I love Azure d'Or too, My bro & I met Annie backstage twice on their Camera Camera tour, she told us that 'd Or' was her least fav. album. I said the Flood Of Lions was my all time fav. song. The glare I got was priceless 'I take it you don't speak French?' she replied DOH!
Thank you so much! Have loved Renaissance since seeing them in college during their "Novella" tour. Have also followed Annie's solo career..saw her at the Bethlehm Music Festival in the 80's and most recently her stop in Harrisburg PA. My favorite band and my favorite singer....still! I'm fairly new to YouTube, but thanks to ephillipblack I'll be on my computer more than I should!
Saw them at Alexamdra Palace,North London in the 1970's with Wishbone Ash and RobertPalmer/Elkie Brooks..Mountain..Wonderful memories..."The Song For All Seasons2 is THE Album Guys!
Really neat, great to see them as normal people. Annie looks like a short woman (or he rest of them are really tall). She has a beautiful voice and is very pretty.

The thing that stands out for me in this video, is John Touts keyboards.
Here he has his classical hat on, but in "Day of the dreamer" ( Dreams & omens ) he plays like a hard rock musician.
Good on you John wherever you are now, you made my friend Stiegy so happy when you phoned him.

Yes, they were overlooked to a great extent, but we were lucky enough to have WNEW-FM around in the 1970's and 80's.
Most of the DJ's were positive about the group, and when I called in they would usually play some Renaissance... WPDH-FM in Poughkeepsie also.
