If any person, regardless of race have the desire to speak better English, without so much slang, they need only watch videos of "What's My Line"...IMHO
Laverne was always self-conscious about her looks, which she felt were too strong and ethnic. But as she grew older her features in fact softened and by middle-age she was lovely. She did have a bit of work done on her nose and chin, but nothing drastic. She was year after year on the Hollywood's "Best Dressed" list. Patty was the lead because the girls wanted an identifiable sound for their records, but Laverne and Maxene also had lead voices, though Patty had a special bell-like quality.
Thank you! The only CRIME in this segment is that they didn't sing a little ditty at the end! I was waiting for it, waitingggg and nothing :( oh well, I guess they'd be asked that all the time.
I even wrote Patty Andrews around Christmas time back in 2004, and she sent me an autographed pic back to me. I received it in March of 2005..lol And as of now, no one is allowed to touch the pic, and it never leaves my room..haha
ohhhhhhh myyyyyyy flippingggggggg goshhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! i have been looking for this FOREVER!!! my lovely Andrews Sisters!!!! I have about every song theirs..lol now I just need to see Dorothy as the mystery guest..lol
Maxene, at first looked a bit irritated at not having a place to sit down, but it ended nicely! Thanks so much for sharing all these What's My Line clips!
In this 1959 episode Dorothy helped identify a lady bartender, an 18-year-old boy bat technician for the San Francisco Giants, the AndrewSisters and a Westchester Country Club dance director.
The panel ( 1:30 ) breaks into quote song unquote --- infrequently thank heaven. The song title, incidentally, is not The Bear Missed the Train but "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" (Yiddish: בייַ מיר ביסט דו שיין, "To Me You're Beautiful")
Is that what Vera-Ellen is? So was her American accent put on? I don't know if you have seen Call Me Madam but she has a (undescript) European accent and it always seems more natural in my opinion than her speaking with an American accent. Fancy that, I knew she was from somewhere else!
Aside from living & vacationing together for nearly all of their lives, these sisters professionally performed together for a total of 35 years (minus an 18-month separation in 1953). When you think of the short-lived careers of other teams before breaking up (Martin & Lewis, The Beatles), that's an impressive record. Can you imagine spedning that much time with your siblings & not arguing? For a more in-depth look, read my book, "Swing It! The Andrews Sisters Story" (U Press of KY). Thanks.
@marcyhead I've always felt it was a pity more people could not see the Andrews in person. They were VERY famous in show business for the ACTION of their act--the fabulous gowns, the intricate choreography, Patty as the humorist. Even from the beginning they believed in action on the stage while other singers just stood at the microphone. You get a taste of what they did in their films but just a taste. They always got fabulous
reviews at clubs and theatres and always packed the house.
Their joint answering of "Yep!" can never be mistaken - you know you're hearing that from the one and only Andrews Sisters.

I used to think they were yidlach, but supposedly they aren't.
and they fought amongst themselves behind the scenes resulting in an ugly relationship that was never repaired before they died.
