New Cairn owners, rejoice, for you have many good years to look forward to! I have two of these dogs, 10 and 11 years of age, and they still show the spunky and stubborn behaviour I fell in love with from the start. And they still act like puppies, too!
I have a Cairn x, and yep they are stubborn. Iv been told that the grooming depends on the type of coat, soft types have to be dealt with differently then harsher ones.
When they are on the lead, they are pretty much in charge, so dont expect them to do everything you want. They have a character and a strong mind. Easily trainable but will depend if they want to do it or not. :)
So true, sometimes id be on the sofa with my PSP and molly would be at my feet, first shed pretened not to be interested, then she sits now and stairs at me, then she does this quiet growling, which gets louder, then barks, the barking wakes up my 14 year old yorkie/Poodle crossbreed, who thinks cuz of the barking theres someone at the door.
@Anime210Freak I agree with Isabel6194. I've had my cairn for 15years, and hes never bitten anyone in fact a bunch of people in my area have cairns including my neighbors many of these people have children. Magic is the biggest mush ball in fact I use him as a pillow or foot rest. I got him when I was 7 and my brother was 3 and sister 1 he never once bit anyone so don't say that bc you had a bad experience. He's my best friend.
to mix=zbobmb...about your Cairn laying down with his feet behind him, must be a breed thing as my Cairn does it also..He has such a super personality!!1
Our cairn, Brillo would kill every cat in the neighborhood if we let him. He is fun and affectionate but when he sees a cat, oh boy, look out. He goes ballistic.
I have a 10 year old cairn terrier, and he is like a little brother! He LOVES to get into trouble and is constantly digging up our yard and has killed plenty of small rodents. He was born with digestive issues and cannot eat dog food. Currently, he eats cream of wheat with cottage cheese along with medicine in his food. He accidentally ate TWO POUNDS of chocolate last Christmas, it was wrapped under the tree and he got curious, resulting in him getting sick and puking in our house, but now we m
I have a very big garden with lots of flowers and plants. He is just having a walk trough it like it`s a forest and than come`s back to the terrace and lay`s in the sun for hours!
I miss my Cairn so much. We had to give him away because my parents moved overseas. He was always so happy to see me!!! And you just couldn't help but smile when he was around. Bazil was the coolest dog ever!!!
My cairn is named Toto!! I think cairn terriers are the breed with the most personality. They seem to have a personality that isn’t very dog-like... and I know that sounds weird. Toto also tends to lie down flat like a mat - with his back legs out. It’s so cute! I wonder if that’s a CAIRN thing to do...
@mizbomb when my cairn magic was younger thats how he use to sleep in the trenches he would dig in our backyard. The US Army could have pracitced in our yard with the amount of trenches we had. He's 15 and still going not digging but still driving me nuts. I swore one day he was gonna wind up on the news cause we live right on the highway and the news chopers would fly over he would go airborne off our deck crash into our fence and chase 'em
i think i got the reject one the only thing they got right that describes mine is he's stubborn. he's been my best friend for 15years idk what i'd do w/o him
tell me about it, i keep my terrier's paws trimmed and everyday she plays with me i end up with scratches all over...i wouldn't trade her for the world though...she is beyond smart and i love my cairn terrior...anyone interested in buying a dog for the family put some serious thought into this dog...stubborn yes, difiant yes, fun, loving, and smart as all get out YES YES YES....amazing pet....!!!
I used to have a cairn she was great, and was so easily trained until she ate some food she wasn't supposed to and almost died. After that her quite family loving nature was gone and she became hostile and would bark for hours on end eventually she bite my sister horribly in the face and we had to get rid of her.
We've had our Cairn for a year now, and wouldnt trade him for anything...He is happy when he gets up and the morning and happy when he goes to bed...AND he has the cutest smile!!!
I have a Cairn, he is a year old and a fantastic family dog. He is so loving and really good with my two children. They are Terriers so can be stubborn and need basic obedience training. They need a firm hand not extreme discipline or they will get aggresive when they feel threatened. Maybe a class would be a good idea or get it vet checked as may be snappy if it is sick. Cairns are not an aggresive bread with the right owners.
Yes. They are a good breed for strong and active people. But my gran is in her 80s. So I keep telling my uncle to get a beagle or a Shizu but he won't listen. Thanks for agreeing!
These really are the best dogs: big dog personality and loyalty in the conveniance of a small dog. I've had one for the past 10 years, and my family have had them for about 30 years. They never age too, mine may be 10, but he hasn't changed since he was about 1 year old.
I have a cairn and she's a great dog. She does get nervous of young fast moving toddlers so I do need to give her a place to get away from them when they visit. I have older kids though and she does really well with them. Extremely loyal and quite the clown. I'd pick her again if I had the choice to remake.
My grandmother has a cairn Terrier but they might have to find her a new home. She bit my grandmother (made her bleed) a few days ago. She is not abused and cared for. I don't think this dog is a good choice for families so I don't know why Dogs 101 said that. I keep telling my uncle to get her a beagle or a cat, but he won't listen,, all in all, this is a good show though.
@dijaal321 I have a carin and her name is Bailey..she is soo cute, and really blonde. you should really get one, just pick the one that best suits your personality, get to play with them and know them first..and she has NEVER had any health issues, just like they said!
I love my dog :)

COMMENT IF YOUR CAIRN HAS SIMILAR TRAITS TO MINE:
1. He likes humans more than dogs, and strangers more than family
2. When the bell rings, he barks/cries continuously
3. When we throw a ball, he will run up to it, but walk back without touching it
4. He isn’t cuddly. If you invade his space, he turns away
5. He lies down with his hind legs out, like a mat. He also lies down in a stretch position, with his butt sticking out
7. He thinks he is one of the big dogs, and is the leader of the pack.
