In 2004 CEOs of large companies on average made more in one day than it's workers did in a year. Does that sound fair to you? People who have a "Sweet deal" like that usually didn't work hard for it, they were born into it. Taxing them would give the average american a chance to succeed in the modern environment. However before tax cuts can be fixed we need trade reform.

First off, where Obama repeals the Bush Tax cuts (that John McCain once called irresponsible) he puts in place tax rebates for small businesses that create jobs in America. Major Corps won't ever create jobs in America because their bottom line is profits labor will always be cheaper overseas. Therefore, raising taxes on the top 5% will not effect jobs either way. My father's company makes just over 750k a year. After breaking it down and looking at everything out of that 750k my dad normally has 40k-60k left over to feed us and deal with are daily lives. If 3% would be took from his income that would be 3% less for us to live on. Taxing the wealthy isn't the right way and you seem to ignorant to realize that.

Now that a business will have to pay more taxes, that's less money they have to put back into their company, the less money they have to do things like pay people, research and development, etc.

If your taxes rise $400 a year, then your take-home pay gets reduced by $400, therefore, you don't have that money anymore to invest in going out to eat. In trickle down economics, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. When you have money, you use it to make more money. That leads to greater disparity in wealth until we have complete and total collapse. The only thing that has saved our economy the last two recessions are speculation-based bubbles. People who have an income of over $250,000 a year will have their taxes raised, those who don't will have theirs lowered. That's exactly why I voted for him. Most people who make over 250,000 aren't working as hard as the middle class and lower. In 2004 CEOs of large companies on average made more in one day than it's workers did in a year. Does that sound fair to you? People who have a "Sweet deal" like that usually didn't work hard for it, they were born into it. Taxing them would give the average american a chance to succeed in the modern environment. However before tax cuts can be fixed we need trade reform.

First off, where Obama repeals the Bush Tax cuts (that John McCain once called irresponsible) he puts in place tax rebates for small businesses that create jobs in America. You don't get through HARVARD without being very well read. I toured the Harvard campus years ago, and it was impressed on us that HARVARD grads are known for the level of reading done by the students and the relationships developed while there. TuxLady... I'm not going to argue that Harvard isn't a great education because obviously it is. That said, Barack Obama doesn't have to have the best plan for America, rather a plan the majority of people see as beneficial. Tax the upper class more, and they still get their share one way or another. Make the lower/middle class think they're getting a good deal, and there you have it. Politics, not because it's right, but because it fools the majority.

These are the same old panic and scare tactics from conservatives. I guess I would be paniced too, if I knew that the other party was about to take controll of the house, senate, and the presidency. The republicans had a chance in 2000. The had control of all 3 and inherited a budget SURPLUS!! 8 years later, we are heading into a depression.

If the govt wants to send out welfare checks, then fine, at least have the guts to call it what it is. The Earned Income Tax Credit is hidden welfare paid out via the income tax filing system. It's the most ABUSED credit there is. People lie about income and number of children living with them in order to MAX OUT on the credit. It's a scam. Obama wanting to triple this is stupid. Why not just call welfare what it is.

oh becuase people lie the poor deserve to die. we can fix it we can change but a flat income tax is horrible. further more it is welfare whats wrong with welfare. helping the poor helps us it reduces crime it cuases them to buy more thus helping the econimy. it is welfare we can fixi. but with out the divide between the few rich and the rest poor would be masive

Past a certain threshhold, companies don't pay much in the way of taxes at all, actually. Second of all, what's killing the middle-class is a system that puts them in direct competition with the cheapest laborers on the planet. Creating a caste of economists who don't have to follow a social contract because everyone's afraid they'll throw a temper-tantrum and start firing people is no solution to anything

It's amazing so many people think corporations pay ANY taxes. They DON'T. They raise the prices of their products and the MIDDLE CLASS pays them when they buy the stuff. Or, if they're American companies and they can no longer compete because of the high federal taxes, the company simply goes out of business and foreign companies will gladly make the stuff and sell it over here. More lost jobs for the middle class.

If we decide to entertain your notion, what happens when those small businesses, who are allowed to create new jobs, grow into big businesses? Oh that's right, under the Obama plan, they'll have to pay more taxes, cut costs, cut jobs...
Under the Obama plan, there is no incentive for a business to do well because of what I just described. Hell, there's no incentive for an individual to do well when we will be faced with the largest marginal tax rates of all time.

Fine, you got me on the marginal tax rate, but I have no idea how you got "let's all quit OUR jobs" from my post. All I'm saying is that the Obama tax plan gives absolutely no incentive for small businesses to do well and it screws the big businesses. It's a mindset like yours, that big businesses can just afford whatever tax increases come their way and will actually stay in the US and put up with it, that will kill this economy and lose jobs.

Have you ever lost a job or heard of someone losing a job because a business's profits were low or because they were trying to cut costs? Now that a business will have to pay more taxes, that's less money they have to put back into their company, the less money they have to do things like pay people, research and development, etc.

(continued post) Let's say you spent $400 a year on something, like going out to eat. If your taxes rise $400 a year, then your take-home pay gets reduced by $400, therefore, you don't have that money anymore to invest in going out to eat. If going out to eat is really that important to you, then you'll have to cut expenditures somewhere else... simple budget-making. Businesses have to do this too. Do you see at all the similarity?

For the last eight years all big companies got the tax cuts they wanted, big oil companies asked George Bush for tax cuts and he gave them all they asked for, yet gas prices sky rocketed and job after job was shipped overseas, its time to try some thing new.

In trickle down economics, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. When you have money, you use it to make more money. That leads to greater disparity in wealth until we have complete and total collapse. The only thing that has saved our economy the last two recessions are speculation-based bubbles. It isn't real economic growth.
If we want to increase economic growth at home, we have to tax the heck of corporations who export good jobs and protect those who keep jobs here.

I once had an economics and government teacher in high school that once told me that Americans believe in equality of opportunity, not equality of outcomes. I'm smack in the middle of the political spectrum, but my time as a student at Auburn, Berkeley and Vanderbilt, and my time as a professor in engineering at Vandy has opened my eyes to a lot. Without assuring some reasonableness in the distribution of outcomes there is no equality of opportunity.
