I was once admonished for writing an ode, or at least I called it an ode, that seemed completely positive about something. The teacher called on a student from another one of his classes, who parroted what he had learned: that an ode was to be both positive and negative about its subject. Pope seems to be completely reverent to the idea of solitude, despite what that man and his lackey told me. I guess people who can't quite manage to write treat writing like some sort of arcane spellcasting.
It's a variation on Horace' Beatus Ille. But it avoids the cynicism.
To be less cynical than Horace would have seemed daring once.
