That would be really useful to a manager on site or in the office. It would let him/her know how many emails they have without wasting the time to check. If you can make this more aesthetically pleasing, you might have a future with this and similar devices. A baseball cap or necklace with a digital display perhaps...

Coupla thoughts.

First, if you switched the power source to one of those thin, flat watch batteries, the package would be less bulky.

Second, how about replacing the individual LEDs with one of those LCD number screens (same as a digital watch)? Then you could show the actual number of emails in decimal, without having to add the numbers in your head. I believe the logic going to the LCD is the same.
