  • i love this very much

  • la amo!

  • he wrote this song about a girl he liked who died.

  • @needlescrape123

Thats a poignant thought but an incorrect one. It was actually about a girl that he imagined in a bout of extreme poetic loneliness. He was truly baring his heart when he wrote and performed this song. For me, it touches on what is perhaps one of the saddest elements of love; true romantic perfection, more often than not, is simply observed or imagined (or both) rather than grasped and/or experienced.

  • i turned this song on yesterday and i made me fall asleep, no joke. so beautiful :)

  • 6 sick idiots know nothing about music.

  • I can't get this great song from out of my head. It gets even better from 3:18 as the strings kick in :)

  • deep iside everyone is alone, alone with his memories and times that gone

  • @schnurrecat it could also imply that a material life (possession etc) is absolutely nothing because what we all want is spiritual fulfillment of the heart? how many people deny their hearts in pursuit lifestyle ? they let their ego control their lives when in truth the heart and soul is the truth . only through genuine mutual love can we find fulfilment trinkets and money only bring little highs that last but a fraction of time . thats how i interpret it because i had a woman just like that :(

  • I'd never heard of this song until seeing "Hotel Chevalier." Now it's one of my all-time favorites. Props to Wes Anderson for providing the most exquisitely beautiful illustration for a tune that any singer/songwriter could ever hope for.

    Bravo!

  • thumbs up for Hotel Chevalier lol

  • @funnycgeese Thumbs up for Natalie Portman :)

  • MAGIC

  • 45collector Thanks for that very interesting I never knew they performed together.

stormwulf346 I know the lyrics say her name is Marie-Claire but it adds to the mystique, I still think it's about Sophia Loren

  • theres a difference between a really amazing song. like american pie. just something epic.

but then theres a perfect song where you couldn't change a word or a beat.

    this is a perfect song.

i normally hate it when photos are put in lyrics videos like this. but these photos made the video.

    simply perfect.

  • I think it's about Sophia Loren. Peter was born in India by British parents who were civil servant, he had 2 brothers Richard and Robin if my memory serves me well, one of which performed under the name of Eden Kane. They are the only 3 brothers to have solo hit records in Britain.

  • @Tel4444 the brother's Gibb came close to 3 solo hit's as well...

  • @Tel4444 Robin and Andy Gibb had solo hit's in Britain but Barry only hit 95 with his effort of "Shine Shine" ...

  • @Tel4444 Richard got to number one as Eden Kane in 1961 with Well I Ask You, Peter reached the top in 1969 with this song and Robin came close in 1976, getting to no. 3 with My Resistance Is Low. Brian Matthew played a track yesterday on Sounds Of The 60s of the three singing together under the name Brothers Kane, the record was called Walking In The Sand - wonder what it'd be worth if you could find it?

  • your graphics are perfect, the compliment to the lyrics, bravo

  • a girl, talking like Marlene Dietrich, with pearls and diamonds in the hair

  • appaulds

  • The song is about a fictional girl named Marie-Claire

  • ok ok ok . i was in high school when it came out ,love the the song but i want to state the bleeding obvious, who is he singing about ?

  • same happened to me. i thought i made uo the line, "where do you go to my lovely, wne youre alone in your bed. I'd sing it att he top of my lungs. glad i found it

  • The best song on earth!

  • nice music

  • i neeed to old youtube back

  • my dad loves this song

  • it should be: their lowly born tags - not lowly brown tags!

  • very beautiful song ..somehow it makes me so thoughtful

  • so I really need to find somebody who clicks with me

  • omg 3:20

you understand : the children beginning to rape

  • Wonderful!!! Great video my friend! Thank you so much! Love this song!

    Best wishes, Willemina

  • I just noticed that you put "he sent you a racehorse for chistmas" shouldnt that be christmas? Well, we all make mistakes. Was i the first to spot that one?

  • @Diablo666Daemon666 bore off

  • balls

  • I'm 22, part of the new "pop/rap/hiphop" culture. But i HATE it!! I respect (and prefer to listen to) the classics... Peter Sarstedt, Gary Numan, David Bowie, Elvis, Beatles, Wings.... Everything really. This new-age "sing about random bollocks and make lots of noise" crap that gets pumped out today is RUBBISH!!

  • @Diablo666Daemon666 I totally subscribe to your view and I feel just like you about today's "music" / the music of "our" generation. I do prefer listening to the music of the 60s and 70s, too, and wish I was as old as I am today (25) back in those days ( "glory days" at least in regard to music!).

  • i love every bit of this song. its so beautiful. i wish i could be like marie-claire somday too. but don't need diamonds or pearls or an even sun tan really. lovely song. love the video too!!:)

  • Bravo ! Very very well done, thank you for your clip !!!

  • Boulevard St Michel, not " of" St Michel. C'est le Boul'Mich.

  • well its St Michel's Boulevard isnt it? Therefore the Boulevard of St Michel.

Like the Boulevard of Broken Dreams...

  • Lowly born tags and map face

  • great evergreen, thanx for this viedeo. with love from germany

  • I request it on LincsFM every week...

  • thank you

  • Vielen Dank für das tolle Video.

  • He sent you a racehorse for Christmas

And you keep it just for fun, for a laugh, a-ha-ha-ha

  • one of the best songs ever written

  • has 2 b the best song ever

  • thank you, I love this song and the video is made very well * * * * *

  • a classic

  • Is this about Sophia Loren ?

  • @psur47

yes it is, indeed, a humble Napolitan girl who became world famous. Actually she never forgot her roots. She acted in many Italian movies about an Italian woman of humble origins.

  • We play' it for 40 yers ago' ;-)

  • I love this song <3

    Thank you

  • absolutes highlight der musikgeschichte....

  • anna!!!!!!!!

  • LOVe it.....its so beautiful :))

  • i miss a photo of the "carefully designed topless swimsuit"

  • I love this song, makes me think of so much...

Very nice work with the video, loved the "type of letter", the velocity at which they went, the pictures that were very well coordinated and put together. All in all, great quality. Congrats!

  • Nice sounding song, but the lyrics are really snobbish and aspirational. Overall I think it's a pathetic song; the characters have a slavish love for high culture and the aristocracy. It's the trajedy of educated, 'liberal' people.

  • @seymourg12 I don't think you got the song. the enchantment of "high culture" , luxury, all that, is only seen in her part. The way he talks about her, the way his words go and his feelings, we can tell he is still very much in contact with his roots, the place whence he came. And deep down, so is she, even though she is surrounded by all that...He looks at her, and sees her as if she were above him somehow...well, he likes her...

  • @FLKMG You say he is still very much in contact with his roots, but he hardly mentions them. All he says is that he grew up in Naples and that he and Marie Claire had a "burning ambition" to rise up. Instead of describing anything of his humble existence, he spends most of the song talking about the symbols of high culture and high society. He recounts such things lovingly, in lyrical language:

"When the snow falls, you're found in St Moritz with the others of the jet set"

  • @seymourg12 To all that you've quoted (his origins and ambition) I would add this verses

"So look into my face Marie-Claire,And remember just who you are,Then go and forget me forever,But I know you still bear the scar, deep inside, yes you do"

That "look into my face, remember who yu are" takes it back to the past days, and so does the scar that she still bears even though buried. The way he speaks of her and narrates throughout the song, traces the idea that they are quite far in terms of

  • @seymourg12 ...in terms of richness, high society etc...which makes them at first view, to be very far from each other. Still, they both have the same origins and he kind of calls to her, so that she reminds herself of that - "remember who you are"....The entire song is about her, like an elegy to her, he puts her almost in an untouchable position, flattering her all the way through...I don't know if I'm expressing myself correctly (if the idea is getting through) , if not I'm sorry...

  • Can someone post :The Last of the Breed ?? Would love to hear that too.

From WIKI: "In 1997 Sarstedt recorded a sequel, "The Last of the Breed (Lovely 2)" on his CD England's Lane.[1] This picks up the story of Marie Claire twenty years on, living now in London..."

  • A really outstanding video! Thank you.

  • I've been looking for this for a while now. Thanks for the upload!

  • Sacha Distel - at one time the UK's favourite Frenchman

  • Only reason i know this song is because of The Darjeeling Limited...and I still love it.

  • I promise, I will never be your friend.

    No matter what.

    Ever.

  • oo hoo..so lovely and sweet song..I just loved it... thanks soo much for posting this beauty

  • Lowly BORN tags!

  • this song is truly an original but I can't help noticing that it's not very spiritual and has bitter lyrics and sarcasm and jeolousy quite unique version of a song that paints a superb picture for the listener thanx for your great video cheers...

  • Great work, gaurasv82! Thanks!

And jozek46 - I know just the feeling, although it was only for 7 years in my case!

  • I also just remembered the name of this song recently myself though it's been niggling at me. Thanks so much for putting it up here. I'll be back to listen to it again.

  • So good to hear this again !!!

  • Similar for me, I I got info from a friend we used to get together in the 80s.

  • wow quedo genial! gracias , muy buen trabajo!

  • Great! it has'nt lost anything with time.

  • It sings of the International Jet Set in the 60's but it's misleading, Most of them died from cocaine O>D's after marrying 3, 4, 5, 6 times whatever. They never really "Lived happily ever after" because they never even believed in the Here after or whatever else you would like to call it. You can only wear one outfit at a time, live in one house at a time.,Travel in one plane at a time..eat one steak at a time, drink one pint of Guinness at a time and so it goes........

  • I was told that it was written for Sophia Loren. It would reflect her much more than Marilyn.

  • beautiful

  • i remembered a song I heard so long ago I wan't sure when. the only part I remembered was ..."where you keep your Rolling stones records" ...and it was driving me crazy. I even wondered if it was all my imagination. Finally today, i googled "how do i find a song with partial lyrics" and I found it. What a relief. After 40 years.

  • @jozek46 the magic of keywords!

  • @jozek46 40 years, really?

  • @hugoefoda I heard it when it was a hit played on the radio, i found out now it was a hit in '69. so really 41 years.

  • @jozek46 Heh, that's awesome.

Normally, so long as you type in the majority of a single line of a single verse in a Google search, Google will find it for you.

  • @jozek46

I know what you mean. I can just imagine how you must've felt when you actually found the song after so long! Its worth the wait :)

  • @jozek46 Lol ive got scenes from films & lyrics stuck in my head that ive forgot where they belong, or ive watched something when i was young and have no idea of the title. anoying aint it

  • @jozek46

40 years?! wow. well done for never giving up. obviously it was worth it, right? :-)

  • @jozek46 google power

  • @jozek46 i kinda find myself in that ..only in my case it was "and the painting you stole from picasso" and "with your carefully designed topless swimsuit" :)) and also...it's been only 3 years or so...but still the amazing " OMFG finally i found it" sensation...i really can't imagine how was it when you found it :))

  • ..no this one, all the verses...

  • Additional. This was a number 1 in the UK charts early in 1969. He is one of three brothers to have UK hit singles. His (I assume) older brother Eden Kane had a no 1 with Well I Ask You in 1961, and (assumed) younger brother Robin Sarstedt reached no 3 in 1976 with My Resistance Is Low.

  • Where's the long version? It has these verses: (JUST BEFORE THE FIRST CHORUS) You go to the embassy parties Where you talk in Russian and Greek And the young men who move in your circles They hang on every word you speak Yes they do (JUST AFTER SECOND CHORUS) You're in between 20 and 30 A very desirable age Your body is firm and inviting But you live on a glittering stage Yes you do, yes you do Your name, it is heard....
  • Yep a gr8 song. I'm told this was written for marilyn monroe.
