  • I actually mix the PVA and Future together

  • PVA sounds so French.

  • @meatisdeliciouse Only in France.. :)

  • Ah... Well I definitely have some wood glue... :) :)

  • @2002And Give it a go.. :)

  • whie glue sucks, i use liquid cement

  • @everythingman987 I use KLEAR mainly now.. but white glue is ok if done properly.. :) Ordinary glue mists the canopies, more often than not..

  • @BasicModelling well, white glue is good for filling gaps in canopies, but it can't adhire to the plastic that well, so fter a while, it falls apart.........trust me, i know :)

  • what about Glue n Glaze?

  • @airfixman1234 I have never heard of that, so I wouldn't know.. :)

  • Im building the Fine Molds Slave 1. It has a tough canopy, with no frame. Just clear plastic against the fuselage. What way to glue that would be best in your opinion?

(Slave 1 is a starship from Star Wars.)

  • @HerrHannibal If you can get hold of Johnsons Klear / Pledge floor polish, I'd recommend that you use that.. it should dry clear and rock hard in a short period of time. I find it works well on most canopies.. :0)

  • @BasicModelling

Thanks man! I´ll look for that.

Great tuts btw! Keep it up.

  • how many models yo built up to date? nice models btw

  • @kav9000 Thank you.. I gave up counting after 200.. :)

  • Does this work just as well on scale car model windshields/windows and etc?

  • @ComradeTony I would imagine so, I haven't yet tried it.. but when I build my next car, that is the method I will try.. :)

  • @ComradeTony I would imagine so, I haven't yet tried it, but when I build my next car, that is the method I will try! :)

  • @BasicModelling Excellent. We also use the same cutting board for modeling. Cheers!

  • @ComradeTony Only the best, eh?? :)

  • what else can you use PVA glue for on an airfix model?

What tools would you recommend to have when building airfix models?

    Im new to all this.

  • @nouterbr Pva glue is good as a filler as well.. :) Just the usual tools, a sprue cutter, sharp knife.. brushes, tweezers.. et.c! I recommend you watch my tool video.. :)

  • where do I get Klear? :)

  • Not sure if they sell it in Sweden or not.. but it can be ordered online, if you google it.. :)

  • okey Thanks :)

  • Nice t-shirt

  • Thank you.. :)

  • Good solution to a problem... I remember white glue from way back in the mists of time...

  • It's still very much about, you know.. :)

  • Ahh.. Excellent video! Very much blue... Blue surface, blue hands, blue plane! And nice T-shirt!

you always wear gloves when building??

  • Not always.. but I used the highly gloss Xtracolor PRU Blue, so didn't want any fingerprints on the model.. :)

  • Its the Vinyl mount-down.

  • ..as sung by 'Hawker' Tempest.. :P

  • WHo? I miss the pun here, apologies!

  • Well, the singer in the (Swedish) 'heavy metal' band Europe, who had a hit with the 'Final Countdown' was called Joey Tempest (his stagename) so naturally I assumed that the 'Vinyl mount-down' was sung by his distant cousin 'Hawker' Tempest.. very poor, I know.. but the best I could do at that time in the morning.. :)

  • Oh very good then! Ho Ha he he! I had no idea Europe was Swedish, only that Sweden was somewhere in Europe ;)

  • You'd be surprised if you knew how much of modern pop / techno / rock music is actually written, if not performed, by Swedes.. :)

  • Such as...

  • I wish I knew.. then I'd be surprised too!! :) :) :) :) Seriously though, I'll be back to you on that one.. :)

  • i have absolute bucket loads of Klear at home under my computer desk... :D and teh pva glue i can get for free. and as for the facial hair.. it rocks, but the other half says if i dont stay clean shaven im going to be very lonely :S best stick to my model... which is about 70% done.. so video should be coming very soon :)

  • My wife would leave me if I shaved.. :) :) As for sticking to models, I do that a lot.. that's the downside of using superglue.. :)

    Looking forward to the video..

  • great tip..ty :)

  • Thank you.. :)

  • nice to see what you do

  • It's a way off passing the time... :) :)

  • thank you a lot :)

  • No problems.. Will film a decalling video soon, maybe already today if I have the time.. :)

  • xoexo

  • I got myself in a sticky situation there.. ;)

  • Gnu!!! Hi ya!!!! Great to see you! Gotta love PVA glue. Knowing how much I know you love your models it's great to see you doing these How to vids. Love the music ~ PiP

  • Hello, Pipp!! :) Yes, now and again, when peole have nagged me enough, I get the camera out and film some action.. :) The music is 'vintage' Incompetec.. :)

  • pva has a million uses rob

you could get a job at customs with those gloves LOL

    love and respect

    scotty and libby:o)

  • I think I'll pass on that job, thank you.. :) :)

  • very nice... i think a good way to remove the excess glue would be a wet q-tip...

do you know the book 'spitfire the one' by philip kaplan? i'm thinking of buying it... i bought another one of hes books called 'legend' about the dc-3/c-47... it's an awesome book with some fantastic photos... i will do a review on it when i'm finished reading it...

  • Yes, good idea with the q-tip.. :) I haven't read any of those books, nor seen them, so I can't advice.. Looking forward to the book review, I will do a video showing some of my reference books, at some point.. :)

  • i use a wet toothbrush at work but i don't think that will work for modelling... ;) looking forward to see you library... :) mine is still very limited...

  • I have a very extensive collection of Tank books.. erh.. ONE.. :) But a few more boooks on various aircraft.. :)

  • that spitfire ur making looks so neat like diecast

  • I have used Xtracolor enamel for the paint this time.. it comes with a high gloss surface, which means it's decal ready and you need not much preparation before adding the decals.. Then you can always matt it down afterwards.. :)

  • I have problems allways with the cockpit of the plane , the glue i use makes the glass dirty

  • You can't use the same type glue for the canopy as you do for the rest of the model.. it's too strong and will mist the clear parts!! That's why PVA glue is good, because it's waterbased, or near enough.. :)

  • Where there too many snorters of "Klear"?

Great Smurf Hands my Friend he he he

  • Did you see the theme.. Blue cutting board, blue gloves and a blue Spitfire..

'that's why they call it the blues'..

  • 'Time on my hands... could be time spent making models...'

  • Ha ha ha.. I had hoped to get some decalling done today, but I don't have the time.. must go back to bed for a bit longer.. than shopping and post office this afternoon! Tomorrow I have the Dr's.. to check my bloodpressure.. :P

  • Hope all goes well :(

"It is better to have slept than never to have slept at all" -A. Non

  • Just back from work.. quick computer session.. and then bed. :)

  • The PRIX or whatever it's called is coming along nice :)

I should make a companion video of when I stuck on a vacform canopy to a balsa f4f with 90 second epoxy. Then I added the frame lines with strips of silver tissue and PVA. all I need is strip rubber (NOT rubber bands) to power the thing - and you would not believe the difficulty getting hold of some...

  • The PR.XIX is a different bird alltogether from the IX.. it's the only Griffin engined PR Spit, and also the last Spitfire to see active service in the RAF, I believe.. :)

Please do make a response.. vac-forming is a very handy technique to know and master.. :)

  • Ah yes the XIX, nice plane, some had contra-rotating props, gotta love them!

I'm sure you will make a grand PR.IX too ;P

I guess the squish forming will be part of the big wildcat video. I have ordered some thick rubber strands (I do have some spaghetti-thin rubber from the same website but it doesn't have enough 'twang' for my plane ;))

  • Yes, twang is important in rubberpowered aeroplanes.. :) My first IX will most likely be a Danish one, and then there'll be about 2 Israeli and 1 Egyptian, a couple of Russian ones and maybe even one from the RAF.. :) Yes, definetely.. that 'Skalski' decal sheet has at least two IX on there, I think.. :) I've been waiting for a decent kit for a long time... Next year I should get another Hasegawa kit, as a gift from Japan.. but it will be delivered in person, hence the wait.. :)

  • Perhaps you could do the Skalski's circus desert IX? The Egyptian and Israeli ones would make a nice double video ;)

  • Yes, that was the plan.. i.e the Isreali & Egyptian pair anyways.. :) We'll see.. :) As for Skalski I can't remembere what there was to chose from, but I'm having the decal box out and ready, as I need my after market decal set for the Swedish PR.XIX.. Mind you, that set is if possible even worse than the original Airfix decals.. regardless of what decals I use, I will have to take the main insignia elsewhere.. :(

  • So one PRIX is swedish and the other will be...?

When do you think the video will be up ;)

  • The other one will be, or rather IS, a Turkish PR.XIX.. as I have a liking for the Turkish Air Force.. or rather their insignia, up until when they swapped the nice bright red squares for some rather boring cocards.. I already have a Turkish Mk.Vb as well as a Hurricane IIc, as well as a P-47 and a Sabre.... a Turkish T-6 Texan will be next when I get round to building something Turkish.. :)

  • Don't you have a turkish FW190 too? What a cocktail of different aircraft :)

  • Not yet, but it's on my most wanted list.. There must be decals for one somewhere.. Both the Allies and the Axis supplied planes to Turkey in the war, in an attempt to sweeten them and to gain support for their own cause.. but Turkey overall was more pro-Allies than Axis..

  • I could have sworn I saw it in one of your old KurtGnu vids, in fact I am positive, 100% ;)

  • I may have shown a photo of the real thing.. but I have never owned or built a Turkish Fw of any kind.. honest!! :)

  • Ok I trust you ;)

  • The video may be up at the weekend, or beginning of next week.. I still hope to go to Clacton Air Show on Friday, as it's actually on THIS week, and not last week as I thought.. I have some minor touch up jobs to do to both XIX's.. and tomorrow I certainly won't have time to make any videos.. so it will have to be done and posted later.. :)

  • Well don't rush it, you don't want to raise the bp or anything. Enjoy your air show!

  • Hope I can go.. son is not having a good day, he can't eat with a mouth and throat full of blisters.. a common side effect to this particular chemo! Last week on the same treatment he was fine, this week he's not!! Probably too much of a good thing, eh.. :) They may not let him home 'til Friday, in which case I can't go to the show.. but that is a lesser worry, really! If I miss it, I miss it..

  • Oh, that doesn't sound nice at all. Puts things in perspective.

I just went up to 20mg of antidepressants from 10mg and I got some serious diarrhoea - but worse things happen! And hopefully my mind will soon benefit ;)

Hope it all goes well with your sons treatment. there will be plenty more airshows I suppose, one day you might see Mr Vulcan.

  • The side effects will stop when the drug is out the system.. :) I just hope it won't delay him / them coming home tomorrow.. :P You better watch that stomach of yours.. :P

  • Yes I'm sure they will.

I think my bowels have now settled :)

  • A bit like Camilla.. you just never know where she'll park'er bowels...

  • Yes, anyways.. your kind of medication takes time to work, but when they kick in the result should be good.. :) :)

Weather's brightning up now, which is good for those attending Clacton Air Show today.. They have promised good weather for tomorrow as well, so lets hope!! It's starts alrready at 11 I think, which means I will have to be up by 9 or I'll miss the 10 o'clock train.. :( I can't find any info on the net, normally they're very good at showing the times and the participants.. :)

  • Well today has turned out quite nice. So you are still going? The son is home now?

  • I don't plan as far ahead as tomorrow.. :) But I hope to go.. if things goes to plan, they should be home tonight at some point, they don't leave London until about 5 o'clock or so.. hopefully not too much later!! Now I need to get going, I have a house to tidy up.. Will take a rest from modelling for a day or two, recharge the batteries as that is much needed.. and then attack that G-6 with a vengeance.. :)

  • Had a look at that kit again this morning, if it is as easy as the manual suggests, it should be a delight.. but if it's as easy as the Spitfire turned out (not) to be, then it'll take a while to build after all.. :)

  • great tip dude, keep em comin!

  • It'll be decalling next.. :)

  • thank you very much....! good video! 5/5

  • It's a handy tip.. :)

  • Are you sure Klear is coming off the Market? Here in the states, it's been renamed. It's now Pledge with Future Shine. Same stuff!

  • Rumour has it that it's not.. :) Be careful when using it as I have heard it is not at all the same quality.. :)

  • super nice video and music but the split infinitive? gawstly :)

btw, now that the canopy is glued shut, how do you propose the pilot enter or exit? or is there a floor mounted ejection seat?

  • No, if the plane went down, so did the pilot.. :P

  • proof that swedes are still 'savages' :)

  • By the way, it's not a 'Split infinitive'.. it's a Spitfire.. :)

  • aha, surely you are joking! A Splitfire ? lol :)

  • Jawohl, mein lady.. ein Splotvogel..

  • you'll not get away with your insolence young man :)

  • Insolence? Isn't that what sticks plastic together.. :)

  • outrageous!!!!! you must use DUCK TAPE...we will give you a caution and if you violate again, you shall go back to school, write on the chalkboard 500 times this phrase" granskare is always right and I am always left :)

  • I tried to get some DUCK TAPE, but Donald wouldn't part with it.. :P

  • It encouraged careful flying.. :)

  • not flying you dolt...LYING carefully is our goal :)

  • What.. you've finally entered the mad world of pollytickles.. :)

  • He's a thunderdolt at that.

  • a good hint! As "Johnsons" is not availbale here anyway, I'll try that wood glue. btw: If you are allergic to plastic (the gloves), modelbuilding is not the best choice, isn't it?^^

  • I bite my nails and don't want it on show.. :) Also, and more importantly, the plane is highly 'gloss' coated and every fingerprint will show.. :P

  • poly vinyl acetate

    so many names!

  • .. and so many possibilities.. :)

  • One time, where I work, someone ordered a bottle of 'vinyl acetate' and I thought I wonder what you can do with this?...

  • More invaluable tips!:)

  • If you ever feel the need to add a canopy to a Spitfire, now you know how.. :)
