When i was younger this song scared me, my father is a captain on a boat and i was allways so afraid when he went out on sea that he would land in a storm and that he would have to sing this song so the lighthouses would turn on.
I love my Beethoven concerts, but I wish that more music like this were commoner in the orchestral repertoire, that I might see it played live without going all the way to Iceland (where at least I *hope* it is still common).
The composition is a modern one, isn't it? I mean, it sounds like post-Debussy! The words might be old, but I doubt the music itself is "traditional"...
@Rotebuehl1 The composer was my great-grandfathers brother so this piece is from mid 20. century. If I am not mistaking then it was first released 1944 but I'm not 100% sure though.
Icelandic... That's one of the most beautiful languages in the world! I have to learn it and when I learn I will dedicate my self SO BAD! - Congratulations from Brazil
@OosutoriaFangirl And icelandic is sometimes so archaic. Like holy, heilagur and hailags in gothic. Light, ljós, liohts, glee or joy, híala and hiala also in gothic etc.
The message of the line "Brennið þið vitar" is a plea to see light from the lighthouses to show them their way in hard seas.
But what I like about it is the usage of the word "Brennið" (en: Burn) opposed to something like "light up", which makes this line so powerful. As they use this word, you can picture how the sailors are desperate; it's not enough to see they light, they desire it to be blazing when they see it. Burning so bright as to reignite their hope.
@marnipet Before conventional lighthouses, beacons where lid, because they where common bonfires. From there this terminology is coined. So, the beacons burned - blazed, if you wish - as you put it, just like in the Lord of the Rings, when they wanted to let the people of Rohan know that they were needed in Gondor. This use of fire beacons goes far back into world history. :)
@Draksen Keep your nation, your blood. Any creature can speak icelandic, any haitian animal can speak french. It is the people that are sacred!, God bless from USA.
@Draksen Þakka þér kærlega fyrir! Takk! Thank you! We will preserve it. In fact, we have a policy on names, and we have very few loanwords. Archaic grammar as well. Many of us (myself included) can read old norse from around 1100. Of course it will be preserved!
Icelandic has changed very little for 800 years. This song should be our national anthem.
þegar talað er um "old Icelandic" þá hljómar það svolítið svona eins og þjóðlag en þetta er nú ekki svo gamalt. Flott lag, flottur texti, flottur kór, útkoman getur ekki verið annað en hrollur.
I know exactly what you're saying. That person who marked you down obviously has never heard any Russian things. Lol, I've grown up with bothe Russian and Icelandic.
Whats with all the nationalists in the comments?
