  • I've heard a ridiculous amount of music in my life and I can honestly say that this is probably one of the best songs I've ever heard.

  • 6:39 to 6:50 - AMAZING!

  • I think Devin could play the spoons on this knee and make it sound magical.

  • something very Queen-like about this song, whether it's the grand scope or the whimsical folk section or the dramatic flourish.

  • 5:13 - awesome solo by Vai! Short, sweet, and abslolutely beautiful. What a cool dude, to participate on this song :)

  • This song makes me happy.

  • 2:51 DADADAA DADADAA! Gotta love that shit

  • @Corrosive1 hahahahahahahaha i went back and listened too it- totally sounds how you typed it XD

  • 5:21 is like a pimped out devin townsend take on that one section from rushs la villa strangiato

  • is he referring to Carl Jung and the collective unconcious in this song? hmmm I've always just assumed that.

  • Devin Townsend could be taking a dump and we'd still label it as a genius creation!

  • @schoolsterzz Hey! Shut your mouth! This is not a Primus video, so your comment is unacceptable!

  • @schoolsterzz Your comment sucks!

  • @schoolsterzz So, why are you here???

  • @schoolsterzz i think u had your headphones in where the mic goes, because i can see no other way that a human being could hear this music and say that

  • @schoolsterzz you suck

  • @schoolsterzz I challenge you to quantify this. Go ahead. Fail.

  • An album like this has to exist after something as crazy as Alien.

But I like Alien best of all of his albums. Just saying.

  • I love everything this man creates.

  • Wow thanks for uploading this!

  • @sickLu1z No problem, at the time I uploaded it there were few DT songs on YT, so I thought I should share this masterpiece with the world :)

  • Steve Vai plays this solo...

  • @patbhiany oh really?and i always thought that devin sounded a lot like vai on this one::D thanks!good to know!

  • Hooray for dr. devin townsend

  • this is amazing.

  • Fuck! i wish i could pump even more up the volume, higher than 85 dB....

  • Great song overall, and one of Steve's best solos.

  • 2:55 makes me happy.

  • This is Devins best track in his impressively consistent discography.

At least till Decon is dropped.

  • @MikeC26GH I think that something on Ghost will literally cause bricks to be shat.

  • @Pyrokanetis Ghost is going to be in a world of its own. Having hear the stuff that he's been putting up on his own youtube from it...I can't be anymore impressed than I already am until its released :3

  • This is quite possible the greatest song I have ever heard. Devin you are a god of music

  • This is just from an alternate plane of consciousness - and I love it!!!!!!

  • All the bullshit comments and arguments are really tiring.

  • Hmm... I do like Ki a lot, and Addicted too, less than Ki though... But... I can't help thinking that I wish he'd kept his wall of sound that is, to me, the Devin trademark. That overwhelming feeling..

  • yeah!

  • 3:44 I love it!

  • @K1RKH4MM3T It's so heavy and brootal eh? lol

  • GOD I LOVE THAT BANJO INTERLUDE

  • 2:55 - 3:53 makes my hair stand up in pleasure WOAH!

  • Am I the only person that realized immediately that Steve Vai is soloing on the last half of this track?

  • @Zeta9966 No ;)

  • @Zeta9966 its not steve vai, although Devin did tour with steve vai right out of high school so im sure he picked up some technique

  • @ClaptonandSlash No... it IS actually Steve Vai. Look at the recording credits.

  • That's all Devin. He has some soloing that sounds imular to Vai-ish playing, but he has his own style, and you can tell the difference if you listen closely.

  • @ZiniNkenaki Hehe, nah dude it actually IS Steve Vai. He's creditted on the CD as the "Solo on Track 3" Yup.... it's Steve Vai.

  • @ZiniNkenaki Devin used to sing for Vai. This is Vai's solo

  • @gibbsies - As well as Steve Vai is credited on the album for the outro solo here.

  • @Zenutheduck Yeah, exactly. It's good to know Devy has his connections :P

  • Hooray for dr young and earth born and sun!

  • hey some decent country

  • @ginemginem keep it to yourself

  • @gibbsies why?

  • @ginemginem because nobody really cares if you find it boring, that's just what you think. In other words your opinion doesn't matter at all

  • @gibbsies Nor does yours.. At least I don't act I think it matters... Btw, I still think it's boring. Also, I believe you fail at logic...

  • @ginemginem did I act like mine mattered? What was my opinion by the way?

  • @gibbsies Yes, you replying is an implicit statement in itself.. Oh, and btw, the song is quite boring...

  • @ginemginem again that's your opinion, not the truth. Do you know how to write music?

  • @gibbsies I'm not in the mood to get into a discussion about the ontology of truth.

And yes, I write music.. And I still think the song is boring..

  • @ginemginem Well then keep it to yourself like I said, or else this will always happen

  • @gibbsies Yes, fascists will try and restrict my freedom of speech.

  • @ginemginem Fascism is cool!

Devin isn't just about writing music. It's also about quality, emotion, and execution. If you can write music, then great; I would expect you to see a song as boring, when others think it's awesome.

  • @IrradicableOne thank you for a civil reply. I truly enjoy getting those (even tho my original comment was a bit trolly - but not dishonest)

And I'd have to agree with you on fascism being cool - it's the hip thing now'a days..

  • @IrradicableOne Yea. Once you dive into a specific subject, to create in that medium, you can understand what I'm trying to say. My example would be minecraft; it's fun as hell to play, but it's a /very/ simple game.

Also, I was kidding about the fascism thing. Lol.

  • @ginemginem Your Life is Boring

  • @theemperorofdarkness I believe you think you're quite insightful...

  • One word - Collective

    Mankind - CONNECTED

    Most epic chorus ever.

  • Thank you for this dude! I had an album with Devin's signature but it broke when I was moving to another apartment.

    Thank you

  • 3:45 made me lol literally

  • @patrickd161

and then after that bizzare part, comes the best part of the song! epic!

  • One word-amazing

    devin townsend fanbase-united:)

  • Hooray... for Devin Townsend

  • This is just great stuff guys.

I discovered him after listening to a special on Grasspop metal meeting and decided to find out some things about some of the bands.

    power all the way.........

  • The solo has so much of the Steve Vai influence. I love it!

  • @RobertBorden121

Actually, the solo is played by Steve Vai himself. :)

Steve and Devin go a long way back, since Devin did vocals on Steve Vai's Sex and Religion

  • @Hexxor1985 Oh. That IS Steve Vai. That makes a lot of sense then. But I knew from the S&R tour they did that Devin would play all the double lead parts with Steve, therefore I considered he may have assimilated the style (which is still probably true, but I suppose he doesn't try specifically to ever sound like a Vai clone).

  • i think devin townsend is truly truly mad

  • my sister burned this on a CD for me in the 9th grade when I was near-suicidal. I liked it a lot but overlooked it because I was more into conventional or simple music. I kept losing and finding this song on and off for the last four years. it's just one of those magical fucking treasures, a huge wall of sound that grabs you by the gut and doesn't let go until it knows you want to cry. I hope I never lose it again.

  • @Nelarsen The melodies of vocals, the sound (listen to Devin with good equipment - there's so many layers of sound in his music), interesting rhythm, combinations of notes and chords making a perfect harmony (or sometimes a beautiful disharmony).

To me, personally, it's about all the "sweet spots" in his songs. He's the mad scientist of heavy metal.

  • @rurzan Agree with everything you say, except the last part. Devin is way beyond metal, way beyond any music known to men. He's an alien sent down to earth to expand our minds:)

  • @rurzan Yeah you must listen to them on a good system to even begin to really appreciate what all is going on hard to believe its just 4 guys...

  • @rurzan Well said. 1.46 is one of those sweet spots... and 3.27... actually fuck it this whole song is one.

  • @Nelarsen

Harmony, melody and those two combined in sense of not making possible, it's not popass disco where only listen to one melody, it's a nice statement of being i little too brave. It's a great track :) Not for everyone of course but it's still a great track

  • @Nelarsen that's a very subjective statement buddy. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. It's that simple

  • If Devin Townswnd's music was heroin then I'd be a junkie! I'M ADDICTEDDDDdddddddddddddddd!

  • fucking holy shit cant even describe how fucking amazing this is

  • my head is eiaculating

  • @dimetonn I love all these comments. It makes me proud to be a fan of Devin's music.

  • This is beyond one of the best pieces of music i have ever heard. Devin Townsend, should you ever read this, you are a god sir. You have opened my eyes to the majesty of music, that should be heard and spread the entire world. I hope that one day, you gain the worldwide recognition you truly diserve. You sir, are my true idol.

  • This is what music on the radio should sound like. This is brilliant, thoughtful, spiritual and so touching. And his solo, I just hang on every note.

  • That part before the weird western interlude is so mindlblowingly epic. Holy fuck ;_;

  • I defy anyone to achieve Vai's tonality. Gives me the fucking shivers man.

  • i could see devin being a nerd. in a good way. he looks like a bad ass nerd.

  • oops...its called edge of seventeen, not just like the one we know..sorry

  • The begining riff reminds me of Stevie Nicks - Just like the one we know..jus' a little.

  • amazing album. btw, that's a Steve Vai solo on this song.

  • E P I C x

  • i have this album. you guys should buy this album...

  • am i the only one who likes to air guitar steve's solo using mouth as a speaker?? :D

  • This song still makes me wet its ridiculous... :3

  • what the hell does he do?!

I mean this is not a song, this is just EPIC

I knew him for 2 hours, just hanging on youtube you know...god damn it...he´s so great !

I hear Sonata Arctica an stuff like that...this is more complex...but this Composition, songwriting, absolutely awsome !

sry for my bad english ;)

  • He is a GREAT artist! Support Townsend!!

  • @SilverMakesGold when i say to a friend that sonata arctica aren't great i show him Devin :) he's great and he's the only one

    I MUST SEE HIM ON 26/ 6/ 2010

  • Great song! Why is some artists so underrated when it obviously blows so much else away!

  • Wow, Synchestra is better than I thought.

  • He was awesome before, with this album he stepped up and made his awesome even better :)

Thank you youtube, for now I have no choice but to go buy this album. The awesomeness must reach my collection. Devin, you fucking rock!

  • My most favourite guitar solo ever. <3

  • I@gemsybobsy if that is your fav, guitar solo, you may want to listen to "Whispering A Prayer"- Steve Vai. The solo was by that artist. Devin was his apprentice.

  • Steve Vai plays this solo :-)

  • I know so. :) It is my favourite ever.

  • Dev needs to cover some Jerry Reed, after i heard the chikin pickin part, Jerry Reed sounds like a good thing. this is great music here.

  • for the love of GOD people, can't you spot even the most obvious of trolls? Quit feeding him. God damn.

  • Okay, I am not strictly Christian in the sense of going to church and praying as much as I should, but I do believe in God, I just don't believe in Religion.

Some people might call me a Christian for that, as most Christians don't consider it to be a religion, rather as their own subjective connection to God that they call their own.

Thing is, reading over this whole discussion here, you can see that HeresyOfTheAbsolved is less hostile in his message than the Atheists against him.

  • Music = Religion

    SCIENCE!!!!

  • synkronyk. That is horribly distasteful, and in no way speaks volume to your character.

  • take your imaginary friend and fuck off. You are a plague on our species.

  • Are you talking to me? Don't be offended metacarpied, but I don't really know why you think that. What exactly do you mean by that? I am not agitated or anything, but I would just like to know. Hope I am not ruffling any unintentional feathers.

  • I decided to add my 2 cents after having followed this discussion for a while. Saying that a genius of Devin's caliber would need this or that religion in order to [whatever you think he'd need it for] is somewhat selfish of that religion's follower. If he'd really need a religion, why Christianity?

You say that he's lost, but in my opinion those who keep searching for the truth are bound to be much more creative than those who THINK they found it. Cheers.

  • @rurzan good point man really good. my gf recently apparently found god in her life and it pisses me off. retards... im a fire fighter has god helped me? no, where was god whne my co worker and friend fell threw the floor and burned to death.

  • @rurzan

I agree. The 'need' for religion, faith or deep belief is a personal thing on an individual level. Usually the people who try to tell others that they are 'lost' and lacking the qualities required for salvation are those who continue on a ideological groove created for them by their need for identity or conformity to an accepted level of 'sprituality'.

  • I am not offended. I am saying that you wanting Devin to be Christian or thinking he needs to be so, as rurzan said, is selfish. And boring. If everyone believed the same thing, or used the same "tools" as you say, the world would be boring.

Everyone is always at least somewhat lost in life. In life there is no settling, things are always changing and you always will have struggle. Lost and found, success and failure, are mere illusions. There is only growth, and to each his own in growing.

  • I agree. I find it unfortunate enough when people who have spent a lot of time and energy learning, honing and fine-tuning a given skill to become as good as they are say "God has graced me with this talent". Seriously? I thought they developed over years of practice.

That said, I also find it annoying when people say that of others' talents. "Oh... God has blessed them with their talent". It's almost like some kind of conceit some religious peoplehave; "*My* God did that, not yours! So there!"

  • atthegates1987, which Christianity do you speak of?

  • Vai's playing makes itself so obvious:)

  • that's 3 wishes

  • Why would you want him to be a Christian?

  • Hell no he would never become christian

  • hmm. You sound like a very boring person, if you want that.

  • If you thought like Devin, you wouldn't be a Christian.

  • 3:45....ok....didn't saw that coming, lol

  • The more research I do on this guy's music, the more I absolutely love him... It's so intense, really spiritual stuff in a way. I haven't taken Ki out of my car since I bought it a couple months ago. I wish there was more music that was this engaging for me mentally...

  • love this song.....orgasmic solo at the end :D

  • favourite townsend song. The way the crescendo builds is amazing...

  • wow, everything about this song is awesome, thank you for posting the video!

  • No problem mate :) I'm glad you people enjoy this song as much as I do.

  • At the end, I can hear the Steve Vai Influence.

  • Thats because Mr Steve Vai actually did played the guitar solos on this track.

If i remember correctly Steven Vai used Devin for some vocals on an old album years ago so he's just returning the favour.

  • the solo in the end IS PLAYED by steve vai, he was invited to collaborate for the song since they are both good friends

  • You know, I thought that was him. I'm not familiar with much of Vai's work, but he does have a certain sound.

  • Can't wait for the next album, it's supposed to be more on the line of Infinity and Ocean Machines.

I liked Ki, good to take a nap :P

  • Hey where would I purchase abums from Devin Townsend. I know finding them in record store is almost out of the question, anyone mind helping a huge fan out?

  • Try online - ebay, amazon etc.

  • yep! that's the best way! i've just received "Ocean Machine" from ebay , pure Devy Metal! |m|,

  • asually record stores will order them for you

  • Comment removed

  • To buy straight from the man,

    devintownsend(dot)com/hdr_mainpage.html

(at that page go to "merchandise")

    and

    myworld.ebay(dot)com/hdrecords/

  • Try "the Internet"... amazon, play, cdwow, etc.. or ask your local record store to order them home for you.

  • IS great... the vocal is like Paul McCartney

  • This man is not only a genius in composition, but also in production. He has his signature wall of sound -kind of production on all his albums. Listening to it is like having a brick wall thrown at you - and that is a compliment. Steve Vai features on this song also.

  • Yeah, the wall of sound is amazing indeed :)

  • yeah. only too bad the inventor of it was a total nutcase (Phil Spector)... Devin pulls it off really fine, though!! he's made it his trademark. the new black would be a much better album if he had used it there too.. well. all hail devin! I'm looking forward to get all the DTP albums.. got Ki today, and it's just AMAZING!

  • Missed the intense layering on Ki, but Dev made it clear he's taking a break in that area. Interesting to hear the rest of the "series" (of which Ki is installment #1) ... Ki IS another work of art, all the same!

  • Oh man I love Ki. Do you know when the next installment is due? I looked everywhere it seems.

  • November 20

  • Pretty sure he did use the wall of sound on The New Black. And the last 3 tracks on TNB made the album completely worth it.

  • This song = superb

  • I listen to DT and Devin and all his works, just wondering what vocal rapture is?
