Hedges had perfected, and his playing exemplifies the notion of the acoustic guitar as both a melodic AND a percussive instrument as well. Very nice piece.
I saw Michael several times and got to meet him once and he was so gracious and approachable. I miss his innovation, music and spirit every day. The world lost a true original and we are more empty cause he is gone. Absolutely amazing.
I saw him at Lisner (DC small place) and some similar place in Baltimore. $10 per ticket. He played "Holiday" and when the my country tis of thee started, wow...What would you pay to see him today?? Awesome innovator.
@Mi37591 please go troll beiber on a beiber song. Is it not enough that i can not look at the comments of a true musician who was not known for radio popularity without fear of seeing that kids name. Hate him all you want i don't care, but it doesn't make sense to troll him here. But yeah he could wash his undies and the rest of his laundry, maybe some talent would rub off.
A few of my friends had the fortune of meeting him and say he was very humble and positive, he encouraged them in there musical pursuits. I like that he is not pretentious and it's fun to watch him dance and get into to his music. Thanks for sharing this video.
Johnny6666, this is well said. It's not right that so many people dissagree. This man isn't to be compared to Satriani or Vai. While I understand the reason why someone would try to do that, it simply doesn't work. I also don't think Viakinglee is necessarily comparing the three. =P
Yes..he invented this style. Of course lots of musicians had used alternate tunings before ... but not in the "heavy way" he did...he called it "savage myth guitar" or "acoustic thrash" ..basically using the guitar as a little orchestra at his command, with a low bass guitar string....crazy motherfucker he was.God bless him.
yeah,he called it lots of crazy names :D BTW,I think one of his major influences was Alex DeGrassi,I heard one of his album and he's a phenomenal acoustic player
No guitarist can ever be as good as Michael Hedges. Hedges mastered his own way of playing. People can come close but they won't ever be able to master Hedges' style. It was so natural and only he could have mastered his own skill. That may sound confusing but think about it and you'll understand after awhile
the master. Probably the best musician I've ever seen. He always looks like he's having the time of his life and just grooves because its connected to who he is. This month is the anniversary of his last month alive so I think everyone should remember what he brought to this world and who he actually was. inform people but don't go all Jehovah's Witness about it haha
....a friend of mine introduced me to MH by inviting me to what turned out to be his last show before he tragically died. Incidentally, we are both JW's haha...I've since been am admirer of him, and can't wait to meet him in the resurrection...perhaps even get some lessons off of him.
Very wrong. Check out all the Candyrat guitarists (eg Don Ross, Antoine Dufour, Andy Mckee and many more). You'll love me for telling you about these guys since you don't seem to know them.
I don't know Tom Smith, but I do know Kaki King, and she doesn't really match up with Hedges..
Kaki King is definitely of that school and you can certainly hear Michael's influence in her playing, at least in her performance on Letterman years ago.
Tom Smith is on myspace /TomSmithMusic
His style is different than Hedges but they definitely come from the same neighborhood, literally. Hedges and Smith and Will Ackerman were all in the scene in early SF and you can hear their mutual influences. Tom was an influence for Hedges and round robin with those guys.
Yes, I do agree that she's in the same neighborhood, since she IS a fingerstyle guitarist, and does have a few cool songs and innovative techniques of her own, in the spirit of Michael Hedges.
However, it's a misnomer to say that the only two people who come close to Michael's style are those two, as they're not as close as say, Andy Mckee or Antoine Dufour. That's my opinion anyway, but I may be biased. :P
You should really check out the rpoland channel here on youtube, you'll like it. :)
Amazing stuff. Thank you SO much for the upload! It's terrific that YouTube is a real visual (and auditory) archive for one of the most important musicians of the last 20 years.
Thanks so much for posting these videos. Saw his a couple times in concert and was looking forward to so many more years. Great to be able to see him again.
wow thats amazing music. I hadn't even heard of him untill today and i've been really into guitar for some years now. He is definitely super super super underappreciated. a contribution to music like his is comparable to what elvis did for rock 'n' roll
wow-watching these videos brings back such great memories of seeing him while I was living in Nashville. Such a great loss to music when he passed...gosh
fuckin right man. american idol can suck my balls. and hedges is genius who i wish was still alive so he could walk up to simon and smack in the head with the end of his guitar just like pete townsend did to abbie hoffman at woodstock
A proufound performance. Thank you type3! If you are a fan of Hedges, check out Michael Gulezian's cd to hear "Michael Hedges Goes To Heaven". A beautiful song he wrote as a tribute to Hedges.
Without a doubt...... And the coolest guy you would ever meet..... We lost a lot more than music when he rolled away...... We'll miss you Michael.....

No offence, and you're thoroughly entitled to your opinion, but Hedges eclipses both of those players you mentioned.
They're not even in the same league when it comes to creativity, vision and spirit.
