Actually this series was brilliantly cast, its just too sad that the rest of the world doesn't know their history. 1973 was the year Bruce Lee died. Of course the UK would scoff because their interests were being affected then. The USA had just built the World Trade Center and went stratospheric in finance once they dropped the gold standard. You guys get angry any time someone shows emotion. How christian is that? Isn't it better to give than receive? So you lot must like receiving shite then.
@Mysterwright Mate, you looking into this too deeply: The reason why we Birts - or anyone else with good taste - think this is a load of shite compared to the British version, is simply because this is a load of shite compared to the British version.
There's no competition between the fantastic acting and writing in the UK's LOM, and whether you care to admit it or not, it's pretty clear that Americans don't get British humour which really gave the original it's spark!
@wackypound Right, well I do understand charm and what not. That's beautiful. The problem is that its more tolerated in UK than USA. The reason USA shows so much rough stuff is because it is rough here. Those whom are undesirables overseas come here and take out their frustrations on the public here. Especially in working class and low income communities. That's all they can own property or act as realtor in. It wrongfully leaves a bad taste in our mouth for foreign exports. Everything is wrong.
@Mysterwright Mate.. that made no sense, as I just said; your looking into it too deeply. There can be no opinion about this, just obvious fact - LOM UK over LOM USA.
"it's 1973, or as our chinese betheren like to call it 'The Year of the Fist' ", what?! i prefer "Gene Hunt your DCI and its ..lunchtime...IM 'AVIN' 'OOPS", plus hes a little old to be Gene Hunt, and its too cheesy to watch. i prefer the original, funny, dark Life on Mars. Including with the ending, how does it make any sense, far as i know Sam is a copper not a spaceman.
You people do not get this show! It's a american vrsion of a British version. It thais doomsdayplace in 1996-BUT!-only one person is in that time prieod of 1973 And if watched the show to the end u would know---curtion cast members of the show are his crew
No wonder the us version has a shitty ending all the rednecks, yokels and other american idiots would spend their remainder of their lives trying to understand the proper ending
WTF??! How can anybody stand to watch this crap, all these actors are cheap rip offs.
I am soooo happy to be British right now lol, I love our tv - I mean come on there is only ONE Gene Hunt ... and it is Philip Glenister XD plus we have better script writers as well as better actors.
(btw sorry if I offended anyone but I'm not surprised this show didn't go down very well)
what the devil? this is just a blatent rip off of a classic show! how shit does harvey boy look as gene hunt? fucking yanks at it again! if ABC liked it so much why didn't they just buy the rights to the original and show that? why remake it word for word just with american actors? you can't replicate the on screen chemistry between phil glenister and john simm, and that geezer from sopranos as raymondo, NO WAY!!! USA ruined The Office and now the've ruined Life on Mars!!! thanks for that!!!
I don't think they ruined Life On Mars. They didn't get tapes of the UK version and tape over them. The original version is still in existance. This may be a copy and it may not be as good but its still not a replacement, just an adaptation.
sorry but that scene is lifted straight out of UK life on mars but instead of that "year of the fist" shit, phil glenister says the imortal line "it's 1973, dinner time, I'm 'aving 'oops!" the US version just doesn't work for me.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ah it may seem that the American version is a complete rip off of the UK version, but the American version has completely different ending to the UK version, and it's a lot better, mind blowing in fact, than Sam waking up from a comma in 2008
Yno they couldve just bought the rights to air the real show from the BBC,but God forbid the american audience would have to try and get their heads around something that isnt american. again i beg the question, how awful is the whole surrounded by armed bastards thing going to sound coming from a yank?....theres one Gene Hunt and thats Philip Glenister. and hes not a Lieutenant hes a DCI
I believe it appeals great to US audience, even though it may be a copy of the UK version no offense to the UK one, but it ties in better because the cultural difference. Even though it is the same year UK and US at that time were all different. Mostly in N.Y. Hippies and peace loving were all over yes, but the way things were done in NY well were/are different.
This may be true, but over in the USA, this show really is good and story line is great! Yeah, it may not be the BBC, but cut us some slack, it is better that other ABC shows here that are only about drama or reality,i.e. Desperate Housewives,Ugly Betty, Bachelor, and Dancing with the Stars, ABC's biggest hits. These show dummy down the USA, while even though not close to the BBC version, makes the USA smarter, with the USA version.Amidst the action, it still has smart humor and witty lines!
Maybe, but I still don't see why they can't either show the bbc version or write an origanal storyline and create a new show instead of remaking a show that already exists.
Maybe ABC thought, since the original was such a HUGE hit with the BBC, and lasted only two years(was it two years?) that, with the actors they got over here, (Keitel:Pulp Fiction & Imperioli:The Sopranos), with action, that it would be more of a HIT and last many more years to come? Problem is, here in the USA, we like to be dummied down, hence all the drama shows and reality shows. The BBC version would not relate to the common American here. Many do not get British satire, comedy, and stories.
I think it lasted for two years, yes. Two series at any rate. The thing about Americans not understanding british comedy and storylines really annoys me. The plotlines aren't that confusing! I mean, half of the shows over here are American and they seem to be popular enough. Granted, occasionally a joke crops up about an issue we aren't that familiar with, but it broadens our cultural awareness when we work out what it actually means.
It didn't last "only two years" - both series had excellent ratings, but the writers decided to finish it while it was good.
They then wrote the sequel - three series of "Ashes to Ashes" - largely the same cast except set in the 80s with a new female lead. That show too successfully completed as the writers intended. (A brilliant ending to both shows incidentally)
Neither show was ever cancelled in the UK - which is why it is so brilliant.
@jazzx251 I believe someone told me LOM BBC version only lasted two years, that's why I post my comment in the position of a question. Further, I heard so much about the BBC series, but have never seen it. I really loved the US version. However, my point is, that the BBC version would not have survived in the US. Over here, I do not know, but shows like that are not followed closely any longer. Too Sad.
Hmm, I did not notice I broke the rule. I hear you in you previous comment. I like to watch MI-5 and Masterpiece theater, but sometimes I have to pay close attention, to get the story line. I am just not use to it, but then within time, I can understand it.
I miss this show so much

It's a different Gene Hunt. You can't expect the two Gene Hunts to be exactly the same.

Phillip Glenester is THE DCI Gene Hunt - Harvey Keitel is a great actor but he's horribly miscast.
This is shit.

Keitels "armed bastards" was pitiful. One of the best lines in the original and completely wasted in the US version.
