Its like he is saying, he hasnt got time to fix the house, because the house is similar to him, of which he says he has to leave to look after himself first because he comes first, before the house :)
FUN FACT: in Sweden this song is know as "Trettifyran", "the thirtyfour" (as in house nr 34) and is about how a young boy whose family has lived in the house says goodbye as it is about to be demolished. The subject change came from that in Sweden back in the 50s and 60s there was a wave of modernization of peoples' living standards and there were immense projects to build new houses, meaning that many, many old homes like this were torn down and replaced with large apartment buildings.
@acousticdoug Well not really, listen to it, it's named "this old house" and he talks about how he's going to leave it to "meet the saints" He's got no need for it anymore and he doesn't have time to fix it anyhow.
@yannos1000 like you said he a-gettin ready to meet the saints. He's saying he aint got time to fix the house cause he bout to go to heaven just like when he says there an angel peekin through the broken window pain or at the end he says Gabriel done brought in my chariot when the wind blew down the door. Hes sayin hes bout to go to heaven so there is no time to fix that house. at least thats always the connotation i heard
@acousticdoug It's in the video responses, "34 / This old house-Per Myrberg" It was made in the sixties during the "million programme" as they called it, in a decade a million apartments were built throughout sweden.
My Dad was a friend of Stuart, and we would visit at his home, and a nice estate it was. May have had an influence on my becoming a musician. I was searching fo a Stuart Hamblem version of "Hardrock, Coco and Joe" that he recorded and sent out as Christmas presents. We lost that in a fire, but I remember loving it as a kid.
When go to out family BBQ's and stuff my grandpa brings his guitar and sing oldies, and this is always a favorite so he plays it several times through the course of the day...im 19 and i LOVE this song
I love this old song. I was a little girl when it first came out, now I can really relate to the lyrics. My favorite hymn that was written by Stuart Hamblen is "How Big is God"
This was one of my grandpa's favorite songs. That and "The Old Rugged Cross". He and his siblings would get together and sing all the old hymns. It was a given that they'd sing those songs.
what a treat; my father loved to sing this one to us kids...those were the days; You should have seen the looks on their faces when I took the little transistorized reel-to-reel down to the barn and recorded the chickens and cows, and played it for them for the first time for my dad's sisters and their husbands....those were the days...thanks for the post
I was looking for the song of the same name by Eliza Gilkyson and Matt Epp. This one's great too. That's some fun vocal delivery. It's from the 1950s?
Wow, the original! Although it's been recorded by a few artists, it's the first time I've heard this version, the best, perhaps.
The version I heard for it's inspiration was that they (Mr Hamblen and his friends) found a dead man in a derelict house off the road. I thought the song was from the 1930's, but it appears that I'm wrong on that count.
This song is great but i was looking for the one by billy cotton as i have the 78 of it but cant :( but either way im starting to like this version thumbs up hamblen
Copy and paste this title in the search engine to hear another song written by Stuart Hamblen. If yoy another similar message from me here, ignore it Pebbles and Bamm Bamm-Let The Sunshine In
This song reminds me of my house, the drafty old bard that it is. I love it. Good old country song about growing up poor and hard but still filled with the joy of a good family. The hell with money.
Just for the record (no pun intended), I used to have an old 33rpm Hamblen album. On this particular song's track Mr Hamblen explains that it was recorded in an upbeat tempo only at the urging of the recording company to make it more salable. He goes on to say that he wrote it to be performed much slower and with a more serious tone. He then sings it the way he intended. I like it way better than ANY of the upbeat versions I've heard. I wish I still had the album so I could post it. Oh well.
@bgsrickus Hey, I finally found the slower version that Mr Hamblen had originally intended! wasn't sure I ever would. Thank goodness for Youtube. I wish it included his commentary on it too. Oh, well. Check it out:
The bass singer is Thurl Ravenscroft who appeared on so many hit records it would fill more than 20 CDs. Thurl also sang the bass part on Rosemary Clooney's hit revival of this song.
@ausfan100 Ravenscroft, well when I was there years ago, was the voice heard in The Haunted House at Disneyland and later noticed he was also voice in Haunted House at Disney World in Florida. His bass singing here...IT'S GERRAT!! as Tony the Tiger would say.
i remember my dad bringing this home on a 78LP when my sister and I got a hi-fi... it was the first and last time - totally out of character for him. He must have really liked it. We hated it. But now I appreciate the music and realize I didn't know diddely at nine years old.
The gentleman singing bass is the voice of Tony the Tiger as well as many Disney voices like the buffalo in the country bear jamboree. But most of you will know him as the singer doing, "You;re a mean one Mr. Grinch."
It's interesting how you discover music, I was listening to a cover of this song by a band called NRBQ (The New Rhythm and Blues Quartet) on cd. The-Q covered it in a rockabilly style in the early 70's and the cd player showed the auther of the song and so here I am on the Yubetoop listing to the original. Its great to be able to research the musicians that you like and hear what influenced them. Great song.
LostJohn2, I couldn't agree more. I've always felt that the person who sings a song the best is either the person who wrote it, or for whom it was written. This is the first time I've heard Mr. Hamblen's recording, and it certainly proves what I've always believed.
5* post! I was going through my old LPs and I found this and wanted to play it but since it was my dads record when he was a kid and I played it when I was a kid the dam record looked like some one eat off if it.
This song was popular when i was about 8 y.o. IIRC Rosemary Clooney covered it. But, Hamblen's version was the best. It's as good now as it was then!
I love the Statler's version, but, I don't think anyone can touch this version by the man who wrote it. The story about how he came to write about it was told on an old Jimmy Dean album. It's quite a story.
This is probably my all-time favorite Southern Gospel sing and (in my not-so-humble opinion) I don't think any singer or group has even come close to doing it as well as The Statler Brothers. It was on their Farewell CD/DVD as well as at least 1 other album that I'm aware of. Awesome song no
OMG - what a flood of memories! My grandmother - bless her soul - would sing this song to me when I was about 3 years old. It was her favorite song I believe. She song it to me any time I would stay with her. God bless my grandmother and to the artist who wrote this beautiful song.
It's not true, you know. There's a lot of old songs, country and others, where the "original" is never recorded, and where noone knows who actually wrote it.
..don't understand the question. that verse is in this song. ..however on the rosemary clooney pop hit - the same year this one was released, that verse is left out.
Stuart Hamblen doesn't get the credit that he deserves. I see hymns that I know were written by him and the say " author unknown" that's a shame. He wrote a lot of good songs.
@bjobbins also he was one of the first to dress in the fancy cowboy country and western style clothing thats still popular today, i have a photo in a book of stuart, he looks like one bad motherfu#ka
I found this track on a box set of eight vinyl albums I bought called '150 Top Ten Country Hits'. Having grown up with the Shakin' Stevens version, it made me appreciate the original all the more!
First time I heard this song is quite a memory and I've been wanting to hear it again for years. In the early 1950s I had just got home from being in a hospital for 6ys..I was 9 and my uncle came to visit and had a pull along camper, he loved music so had a Victrola and I would sit out there listening to songs. BUT this is the only one I have ever remember for almost 60 yrs. THANKS so much now can listen anytime I want. TY YouTube also.
Where can I download this exact version of the song by Stuart Hamblen? It's hard to find! My grandpa, and later my dad used to play this for me when I was little, and I would love to record it once more for my dad in his last years....
Someone sent it to me through email, and I was able to then transfer it to a CD for my father along with other favorites of his. If you will send me your email address, I will attempt to get it to you.
The bass voice on this record is Thurl Ravenscroft, famous as the voice of Tony the Tiger and for his singing of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" from the Christmas classic. He would reprise this with Rosemay Clooney in her hit recording of the song.

@yannos1000 Ok I'm lost what does this song gotta do with apartments?
acousticdoug 2 weeks ago
@acousticdoug The song is about a home. In this version it's about a house, in the Swedish version it's about an apartment building.

@yannos1000 hmm i really didnt think it was about that. I thought it was more about Jesus coming back?

@acousticdoug Yes, that's what happens. In the Swedish version the lyrics are different however. That was what I was getting at.

@yannos1000 ha weird do you have a link to that and do you know when that was made cause that would be pretty interesting

@yannos1000 I think the swedish one was based off of Mr. Hamblen's song because this was written in '54 over ten years before the Swedish version.

@acousticdoug Oh yes, most definitely. It's an adaptation no doubt.
