We lived there from 1978-1980 (7th, 8th and part of 9th grade). We lived in the modular homes across from the school. We were the first to live in those - I think there were 3. They were kind of an experiement to see if they would hold up - wonder inf the're still there? We were there during the horrible earthquake that nearly destroyed the island -devastating. My sister and I had horses while we were there - what great memories! Our first house was on "pigs alley" before we moved on base.
thanx for the memories... been several years since we've lived there and we had also moved from a 2 bdrm to that same house also ....lol This vid was GREAT !!! Ur kds sure are adorable !!!
I was on Lajes from 1985-1987. Your outside shots bring back some memories and tell me that things haven't changed too much in all these years. I used to love being able to look out at the ocean from my bedroom window. Time flies!
Wow this brings back memories. You can see where my family lived from her back windows. My dad was stationed there from 1982-84 and again from 1988-91. This section of base housing wasn't there when we were there the first time and they were new the second time around. God, how I miss the island. If you get a chance to go, GO! The island is small and you sometimes get homesick but as long as you get out and enjoy everything the island has to offer you'll love it.
my dad was stationed here at Lajes in 1960. we waited for 6 months to get housing and join him in our off base home. the island then became the permanent fixture of all that is beautiful in our heart and mind. it is the piece of earth the standard by which we compare all other and so far nothing has measured up to the camelot of Terceira Island. todos' davine con u saire.
You're best bet to ask any questions is to connect with the Facebook page 'LajesField SpousesClub'. You can ask and read tons of comment and questions about the base. I am no longer there but while we were there it was kind of a 'hit or miss' situation. They are rebuilding but I've seen people with less kids get bigger housing and I've seen people with several kids get small housing so every time is not the same. I've even seen them put people with a 5 year old and a new baby in a two bedroom!
We're no longer there but I believe you can take all your household goods now. Just be aware that you may not have a lot of storage space depending on the house you get.
so what's the housing for staff's and one child? because as of right now we can only get a three bedroom if we have two kids,is it still the same there? and how's daycare since both of us are military?
I lived not to far from there same view right inside gate to the right. For all who are moving there in the future, if you are married with no children you will get a 2brm. The island is small so be careful not to do everything there is to do your first month there. I loved taking my daughter to pria for ice cream. If you live in Bier Mar it is in walking distance to all important things on the base like the bx, commisarry, gym, church, community center, movie theater, and subway.
we have orders to report there by 31 jan 2011. we dont have kids so im wondering if we're going to have a smaller house. yours looks nice though, im really excited! i requested to join the facebook group, too.
Thanks for posting. I was a dependent, and we left January 2, 1972. I was nearly 12. I have some reservations about Americans making their Praia ghetto, and living on base. We lived 7 miles down the road near the NSGA station out past Villa Nova, and Agualva. Is the huge Cypress still there at the base of the hill in VN?? You can look forward to some bull fights, and the good thing is the children should see not a single thing traumatic in them. Post us an update!!
Yes, the summers are beautiful but do know that it's not the tropical island your thinking with all the pics =0) If you use Facebook look up lajes spouses group and find out more info
Omg! You live in my friends' house Deanna and Janine Bruce. And that park is waaaay different from when I used to live there. That one actually looks good. The one that used to be there was plastic/rusted metal junk. Haha. I miss livin there.
I've had so many questions about Lajes housing and any other questions about the base you can imagine so if any one has facebook- look up Lajes Field Spouse group and join to ask all the questions you can think of!! But still feel free to ask me as well =0)
My family will be coming to Lajes this summer. Are you a member of the facebook group for spouses? I have lots of questions. Do you have a video of your current home on YouTube?
Thanks for posting this, I have been trying so hard to find pictures of the housing there. We are headed that way in just a few months. :) It looks beautiful.
@dixieblu21 ..Wow,that's a nice house. When I was stationed there in 72,(E3) I had to bring my wife and son at my own expense. I worked in the Power Plants. We lived off base in Praia.I loved it there and hope to get back to see another bull fight. Enjoy yourself...it's a beautiful island. Thanks for posting...it brought back some great memories.
Hi! just found out today that we got orders there..how long have u guys been there. The video of ur house was very helpful cause now I know what to expect. Checked out the website but this was awesome to be able to see what to expect as far as space is concern. My daughter just turned 5..what are the school like is ur daughter in school there yet? So many questions!!!! :-)
There are 3 different possible types of homes you could live in- depending on your rank. There's UN rennovated (which is like this one), rennovated, and then the housing area where officers and higher ups live (with the exception of one street for Staff Sgt's) which is where we live now. What's your rank I could give you more of an idea- also what squadron are you with? I would put my email down on here if the whole world couldn't access it =0)
yeah, base housing is technically off base but still feels like on base. It's really hard to explain. There's 3 different types of housing you could get depending on rank and # of kids but you prob already know that. =0)
@dixieblu21 Hi, we're about to move to Lajes in a few months and I'm very anxious! My husband is an E-4 (Senior airman), what are our chances of getting a 3 bedroom housing? We also have a baby.
@valeriemitsuishi Hi, I don't know if you got your answer or not but my father was an E-4 when we moved there in 1988. I know there have been a few changes since we moved state-side in 1991 but I don't think its changed that much when it comes to the housing. Both times we lived at Lajes Field, Teceira (we were there from 82-84 and again from 88-91) we lived off base for about 6 months (give or take a few months) before we were able to move into base housing.
I taught music on the base from 1973-1979. I lived in the BOQ. Have some wonderful memories of Lajes. Great people.

No, this is actually right by Lajes Field Air Base. The local airport is about 7 mins away.
