My 5' RTB climbs all the time. And I feed frozen just cuz my friends RTB had a few chunks taken out of it by the rat he fed it. He left for 15 minutes, came back, too late. Snake died weeks later. I'm not chancing it, but that's just me. Nice snake BTW :)
@Rouyakan actually live feedin is dangerous for the snake and is not recommended. The rat/mouse has a much harder bite than a snake and if it bit the snake there there would be serious issues. Same with claws. The mouse is fighting for its life remember.
You're allowed to feed live because they do in the wild, but it's much safer to feed prekilled or f/t.
Guys, there is NOTHING WRONG with feeding live prey, and frozen/thawed is no better than live or vice versa. Also, I feed my snakes in their enclosures; it's actually a little easier on them since you aren't really supposed to move them after they eat. Do you think large-scale breeders take ALL their snakes out to feed in different containers? And I feed F/T because I live in an apartment and I can't have 50+ rats in there. As long as your snake is healthy and thriving, that's all that matters.
cameroncrazies screw what these people say cus this snake is and looks freaking awesome :) haha all it was trying to say is back off its mine im hungry 0_0 ..i got a 1 year old pink pastel R.T.B and that mother fucker can eat..i feed it both live and frozen he dont give a dam lol nice video
acually mine spend more time in there trees then in hideing or on the floor yes there are lots of things wrong with what happnd but lol but uhh every one to there own sweet cage bro !!!
The reality is that a boa raised in captivity will never be released into the wild. Every boa I have could be trained to take thawed mice in under 6 weeks. Feeding live is for human entertainment, not for the benefit of the captive reptile. If stereotypes about snakes are ever to be changed, live feeding needs to be limited.
i really dont think care it is stupid....Sure i could feed them thawed but not natural so i choose not to......sure I can feed them some other tub where they would not be aggressive in there cage but I choose to have a little fire proof safe that sits in there more people will leave it then get it and if they do get it they got more of a chance to get bit.....sure I enjoy watching the rat suffocate and not to mention the bones crack or eye pop out if your lucky but that is my choice
i really dont think care it is stupid....Sure i could feed them thawed but not natural so i choose not to......sure I can feed them some other tub where they would not be aggressive in there cage but I choose to have a little fire proof safe that sits in there more people will leave it then get it and if they do get it they got more of a chance to get bit.....sure I enjoy watching the rat suffocate and not to mention the bones crack or eye pop out if your lucky but that is my choice
First of all. That cage? Completely wrong. Second of all. YOU FEED YOUR SNAKE LIVE FOOD. IT WILL THINK ANYTHING THAT MOVES IS FOOD. IDIOT. Don't feed your snake in it's normal living area, feed it in a feeding tank or something. That's why your boa is aggressive. Normally, R.T.B's are very tame and docile.
you can feed snakes live food, just with more aggresive species maybe move them into another cage or tub for procautions. also monitor the snake to make sure nothing is happening. frozen food when thawed can have just as much or more then a live one, and u dont get the joy of watching it slowly suffocate.
I also understand that feeding a life Animal to another "Powerful" animal makes you feel like a Badass and expecially infront of your friends.... we all know that. But for the sake of the snake please use pre-killed prey. And Uh.."I love my Snakes if not i would have killed him when he bit me" thats how you really feel about a snake? So for you its you "Love" them or you kill them.... how typical
Oh damn... lets clear somethings up, The Common Boa (Boa Constrictor Imperitor) feeds on live prey "In The Wild". Examples are Bats, Mice, Small Monkeys, etc. But its not a good idea to feed them live prey.... And you will learn one day when you get a $500 dollar vet bill because your snake got bit, I myself had the same problem. Like Eurostar said they do not live long in the wild and most are badly scarred due to prey defending itself. All Animals would go to any length to protect theirself.
why have a snake if it doesnt strike at you everyonce in a while. its a total misscomunication if it doesnt mistake you for food once it is feeding time. you wouldnt want to be tricked into a false sence of security at its early age because once it is big enough and strong enough it will cause some pretty nice scars.
personaly i think its a good sign that your snake was willing to strike at you there. that means he is healthy and eating well.
I can totally relate, my daughter got tagged on the finger yesterday when she reached in after feeding. Nothing serious, but just shows how anyone can make a mistake and underestimate the "wild" in our pets. It happens in the hobby all we can do is be conscious of it. We also feed live,( or stunned if its a really big rat. )
BTW that is a beautiful enclosure you have. Did you build it yourself?
haha thats awesome sweet tattoo good looking snake too i feed all my snakes live too and ive had snakes since i was in 3rd grade and im 22 now. every time ive tried feeding frozen thawed my snake might eat one but they all start to refuse food after a while i think live is way better as long as you keep a close eye on them.
Plus there is more nutrients in live prey. You can put a vitamin in frozen, but it's not as good as gut loading them yourself while they're alive. And I agree. As long as you watch them closely it's fine. It's when you just drop shit in and walk away that they can get hurt.
just for all the experts on here my snakes are still doing great....they are still capable of killing their own food in their own cage....if I get bite again I will do the same thing lmao....I just cant stand the people who tell me you dont care about your snake cause you feed them live rats....I bet those people 1 dont have a snake or 2 have one in aquarium....I love my snakes if not I would have killed him when he bite me
@jayyboy16 Snakes do eat live food in the wild, but thats why snakes in the wild do not live has long, because they are in danger when ever they feed. I am against feeding live if you dont have to, but sometimes you have no choice, the snake will just not eat anything but live, so after you have tried everything to get him/her off live, you can resort to live. But it shouldnt be done unless its necessary.
I'm not an expert by any means. However, I do own six boas, all of whom are housed in appropriate custom plastic caging with thermostat controlled heat. The problems with feeding live include parasites in the rat, not just physical injury which can be both extensive and fatal, especially once you've moved up to rats or rabbits. The freezing process kills all parasites and dead prey can't bite.
It is not a matter of not caring about your snake. It is obvious that you do. However, feeding live also raises the risk of parasites. Freezing kills any parasites. I have 6 boas, all housed in custom cages with thermostat controlled heat. I'm not an expert, but I am knowledgeable. Feeding F/T is much easier for you and way better for the snake. By all means, feed in the enclosure, but please switch to F/T.
@ftfisher4x4 in defense of cameroncrazies3x6 not all snakes readily eat F/T mice or rats, sometimes it takes a while if ever to transition all snakes to eat frozen...its my delima with a few of mine so to decrease parasites (since pet store rats are covered in them) i try to breed my own rats and some eat F/T and others eat live
All of my boas were transitioned from live feeding, as was my Ball Python. It can be done. It takes perseverance. I got an albino Burmese at Repticon in Columbia, SC over the weekend and it has quite a few scars and healing rat bites. It is criminal to allow that to happen. But I can guarantee the she will never see another live prey item.
lmao where to start? well two basic rules since you already said you dont normally feed them together ill keep that out lol. first dont feed your snakes live prey and two certainly dont feed live prey in their enclosure, and i know you said you say it comin with all the experts but honestly common lol rushing to feed your snakes to get a tattoo? just wrap the rats up in something and feed them when you get back, or have one your friends laughin in background feed them n meet up with ya at shop
Some of us who do have snakes. Some of us also know what a rat can do to your pet. Some of us care too much about our animals to allow that to happen. Just sayin'.
@foreverthebotch i know that but the real problem was being in a rush to feed both them i usually seperate to feed....my female was already eating and i did not want her to get bite by the rat....i know i am the to blame
That's a BAD rat for that snake. It's called a zuccker or zuccka rat they have a higher fat content then the norway rat. Boas unlike the pythons can't digest a rat with a high content of fat. It'll eventually kill your boa. Look it up.
@shredder1965 yeh but some will not eat F/T and if you take really good watch, it is fairly safe but if they will eat F/T and you can get them, its the best choice
I love the boa's enclosure! awesome!! And as for you getting bit .....well.......Muwhahahaha!! LOL. I did the same thing about a month ago except it was my hand! Bloody hurt for a bit but thought it was quite cool LOL.
im not sure i was trying not to cuss in front of my 4 year old(u can here him laughing if u listen closely) and my female snake already had her mouth full....didnt want the rat to bite her and didnt want to reach back in right then
