There is no fixed rule in holding a Chinese calligraphy brush.
要使虛而寬 However, the palm should have enough room for turning...
Prof. Tian's explanations have been helpful, insightful, and broad.
Do you know the exact 寸 of the Jin dynasty in cm?

As far as I know, 寸 was based on the sizes of body parts. As people got healthier (and bigger) throughout history, 寸 got bigger. In Western Jin, 寸 was 2.42cm. In Eastern Jin, it was 2.45cm.

Some time ago I read in a calligraphy Website that lists the lengths used in different dynasties. They were different, even in different areas.
