From the Moon, Earth subtends to an angular diameter of 1.8 degrees. That is about three and a half times larger than the Moon appears from Earth (half a degree). The camera used no zoom, so Earth looks about as big as what it would look like in real life. Most likely, you have seen other photos of Earth from the Moon where zoom was used, which made Earth look huge in comparison to the distant craters. This is actual footage from an actual satellite that was orbiting the Moon.

Take a photo of the Moon without zooming or cropping and you will see that it looks no more than a small circle far off in the sky. Earth is just 3.5 times larger than the Moon, so Earth from the Moon would not really look that big...just 1.8 degrees.

An interesting fact: If you were to stand on the surface of the Moon where Earth was visible in the lunar sky it would continuously be in the exact same position in the sky at all times. It would never rise or set.

Due to libration, Earth would wobble in the sky slightly. For observers on the border between the "far" and "near" side of the Moon, they would see Earth slowly rise up and set in the same area of the sky. However, for all intents and purposes, you are correct.

Why is it so hard to believe that we landed on the moon, when astronomy has brought us so many more unbelievable discoveries that people never choose to pull apart like the stunning detail of photos from the Voyager probes, or the 10 billion year-old pictures of the farthest galaxies from Hubble, or the continued operation of the Mars rovers, or the landing of Huygens on Titan which has methane lakes, or even the current ambitious Kepler scope to find habitable planets. Hoaxers have no vision.

I think it has to do with the fact that all the craft you speak of are unmanned. I don't think most have problems with machines going into space. But when you bring people into the equation it opens up a whole nother can of worms. And before you say "what about the space station?" That is not in outer space but in earth orbit 185 miles up. Outer space is a much harsher place for man to be. Van allen belts solar flares extreme temps. hot/cold. Not as a group but manned moon landings only.

I agree with some of the comments here, it does have a certain CGI quality. Its even more apparent in the less pixelated HD version of the video. Its probably because of the bad quality footage we normally have seen of the moon, and making comparisons to it.

I've always hated CGI effects.For example...The werewolf in "An American Werewolf In London".It looked REAL! It was VERY SCARY! (Yes,I am aware that there's no such things as "Werewolves",but I am trying to make a point here,so bear with me).

the perspective on this shot is very weird, it makes earth look very small... is this because of the scope of the frame itself? I'd assume so because at any reasonable altitude you shouldn't be able to see that distinct a curvature on the moon

Hmmmm...video description says it was shot by the KAGUYA lunar explorer. You can't really make assumptions about what the curvature of the moon and the size of the earth relative to the moon would be without knowing what focal length lens was being used. This video is what I would expect to see from a wide angle shot. I have no idea why tidal locking would make these shots impossible. The moon's orbit and rotation are tidally locked, that has no effect on the satellite that shot this video.

oh let me clarify. I mean, this is a phenomenon that can only be captured on film by an orbiting object. If you were to observe the earth from the moon at a stationary point on its surface it wouldn't change position due to the fact that the moon's orbit is in sync with its rotation, so all you'd see is a change of light source over time

Show a moving star canopy in these videos (over-expose the earth if necessary) and I'll believe the video is genuine. Star canopies are impossible to fake, and enable the exact position of the observer to be calculated. This video is fake. The US controls Japan's space program. This is just another anti-hoax effort by NASA's pals in Japan.

While watching this clip of the earth -rise I can recall APOLLO 8 as the trio were orbiting the moon on XMAS 1968 AS they were filmig their trip one of them placed his finger over the lens so there was TOTAL DARKNESS as the earth vanished from view And Anders doing the filming said something like "Hey you guys the EARTH has disappeared & we will have to spend the rest of our lives orbiting the moon" As if the earth vanished" And what if the EARTH VAnished

Also, keep in mind that the Moon does not have an atmosphere that would distort the size at all. Plus, it looks like the orbiter is about 60 or so miles above the surface.. maybe more... so to say that this si some sort of conspiracy is rubbish..
