The two hardly differ in video quality, however the XR500 excels in having more ability and options to adapt to different lights.

I have opportunity to work with many camcorders from $50,000+ pro cameras all the way down to the $200 SD models. The XR500 isn't perfect. Touch-screen can be annoying as can finding the right menu function. But if I had to recommend a camcorder for best hand-held, natural light picture, there is none better or more versatile than the XR500/520 at any reasonable price. If $1000-$1400 is reasonable. No one I know ever regrets spending extra. But they often regret spending too little.

Not much difference to me. I can hardly tell the difference? Why spend the extra money. Big companies will add a higher end model to boost bottom line and use the same platform product and up the bells and whistles ie... Camery and Lexus. I sold both and they drive the same!

Kidhipper have a look at the bottom left of the screen.. you will see its very 'noisy' as the pros call it. noisy means video distortion or static. then when the HDR-XR500 kicks it the noise is gone!..

however in saying that it seems the HDR-XR500 simply doesn't give as much exposure as the XR200 maybe thats why there isnt much noise?

maybe the uploaded can do another test with the low light 'lux' feature

I used iMovie 09 to upload the video to youtube. If you don't have a Mac, there are plenty of good tutorials if you do a search on google based on your current software.
