It's someone who talks over or disrupts the show during a stand-up comedy act. Essentially it is really bad etiquette to talk or make a lot of noise during a live performance of any kind, and stand-up comedy is no different. Unfortunately people don't seem to realize this and sometimes are very rude to the people performing. Imagine it was you up there, no one wants their show to be disrupted, it's their livelihood.

They heckle because they want the attention on them and they want the audience to think theyre funny (but guess what-- there is a reason why "funny" hecklers remain hecklers and dont try stand up comedy themselves). Its one thing to heckle a legitimately bad comedian, but Louis C.K. is a good comedian who doesnt deserve heckling. Do you heckle a band if they play a couple notes wrong?

I know... I understand the historical context in which he was making that joke. however, there can be a subtle distinction between "getting" a joke and actually finding it funny, that is really a matter of personal taste. I think black people, and Africans historically have a lot to be proud of and much of black culture in this country is shaped by their unique history. African Americans built this country from the ground up, and characteristics of black culture are emulated by white Americ.
Obviously it's terrible to watch anyone choke during a performance. My point was simply that because nobody can completely control external factors it's important for performers to learn to have grace under pressure - it's part of the job. Also this conversation has become very general -- it's hard for me to believe all hecklers are created equal, or to assert that any and ever person who speaks during a performance - for whatever reason, it an "asshole."
I LOVE Louis CK's comedy -- I send his videos out to everyone I know and can't wait for new episodes of "Louis." The only bits of his that I don't like/understand is the one on hecklers and the other joke about how awesome it is to be white (instead of black). Otherwise he's my favorite stand-up to date!!

Heckling is part of the job, I love Louis CK but his attitude towards hecklers seems very unprofessional. Especially considering the fact the audience members are encouraged to drink. A good improviser could use heckling as a challenge to his job. I'm a classical piano performer and part of our training is to know how to respond to sounds and changes in the room. You're supposed to be giving something special to your audience and not just look down on them

Heckling is part of the job, I love Louis CK but his attitude towards hecklers seems very unprofessional. Especially considering the fact the audience members are encouraged to drink. A good improviser could use heckling as a challenge to his job. I'm a classical piano performer and part of our training is to know how to respond to sounds and changes in the room. You're supposed to be giving something special to your audience and not just look down on them

Seeing a professional musician get thrown off his game is a sorry sight, watching them stop and sputter. Also, I've seen stand-up comics playfully handle hecklers or people speaking in the audience in a way that enhances their act. I personally don't heckle, it's just not in my nature BUT if you're going to choose to stand on a pedestal as part of your career, U gotta learn to roll w/ the punches
