I cut them in large pieces with fresh sliced garlic cloves, sauté that, pour it over half brown & half wild rice as a side dish.
Or I do the same sauté in a large pot with fresh cut Kale - With the pot lid on (stirring frequently). By the time the Kale wilts, it's done and that is an awesome "Hot Salad".
@DrewBischoff Thanks Drew! I've got some lemons being delivered later this week. These are organic Meyer Lemons from CA. The are the best lemon on the planet and I'm going to have some fun talking about them and making some recipes with them. Watch for those videos starting to hit the channel in less than 2 weeks. Thanks for watching!
What a unique thing to be able to grow indoors. Where does the second round of mushrooms come from? Is the log inoculated with mushroom spores internally so it keeps producing mushrooms?
@NewEnglandgardening The log has the spores in it, and they are constantly growing inside the log. The next round comes from the 'flowering' of the plant, just like a perennial. It would produce probably once a year on it's own, but with the shocking it can be forced to fruit more often. Kinda cool stuff. I might try some other mushroom varieties and make videos with them.
Shiitake mushrooms are used quite often in Japan. I've seen it put into their basic hotpots, fried with or without some sort of sauce, as well as different soups.
@devyangel77 Thanks for watching. The idea of the channel is for me to talk to the YouTube audience like you were a customer in the grocery store. I can tell my stories, help you to select fresh produce and know how to use it at home. Sometimes I talk too much...just like in the store! I'm glad you enjoy the vids and thank you for watching. Lots of good stuff is in the works. Fresh is Best!
@bbq4smoke Be sure to read your directions! If they are anything like mine you will have mushrooms a week from your ice water soaking. You will love them! Let me know how it goes. Did you buy them from Lost Creek?
@bbq4smoke What part of CA? Your humidity will be as much of a factor I think as the heat. We are very dry here in N. Utah and when you couple that with the heat we were having it really dried them out. We had a ceiling fan going in the dining room and that really moved the air around for more dryness. Mine are resting now. I just soaked them Monday night. I did them both in a 5 gal. bucket. Every two weeks until the first of Dec and it will be fruiting time again. I'm excited for you!
@YourProduceGuy So Cal, it get pretty hot. so I guess after the 1st shock it needs to be soaked in water every two weeks maybe more? I am going to make a calendar to keep things in order.....
@bbq4smoke I grew up near San Bernardino. Moved to N. San Diego county after getting married and the difference in humidity was evident to me. Just follow instructions. They also give you a phone number to call if you have questions. Don't hesitate to use it. Or ask me as I'm an "old pro" now. LOL. Best wishes with that. As I say, I'm excited all over again thinking about what you are going to be experiencing. Can't wait for results.
@TracysTreasures24 Many people come regularly to fill their bottles and other containers and take the water home for drinking and other purposes (like soaking their mushroom logs I guess!). The unused water just drains into the creek that is right there next to the spring. That creek flows into local wetlands for waterfowl and then eventually end up the the Great Salt Lake.
Yes indeed, you are a man, and a very cute one at that! You'll be getting all sorts of "mash notes" from middle-aged ladies. ;-) Excellent video; I've subscribed!
@pjavery80 I believe the logs I have are oak logs. I read a note on the Lost Creek Mushroom Farms that they ship "sweet gum" logs for orders in CA because oak logs are not allowed to be imported into the state (potential for some sort of oak tree pest in the wood). Otherwise I think they ship oak logs to everybody.
This is one of those videos that just make people want to get started! Thanks for a great guide!
You can definitely find some inspiration in Asian cuisine. In Chinese cooking, I always use one or two (dried and then soaked) black mushrooms (same thing, just that the Chinese don't say Shiitake) to add some depth (umami)...
Let's all spread the word to our friends about 'Yourproduceguy'. If you know someone who loves to cook or just loves fresh fruit and veg, Tell them about this channel.
Does the shittake mushroom look like any poisonous variety? I am paranoid about growing my own as I am a mushroom rookie and I know if you get a bad one you can die eating it. I suppose the shittakes would be good in spaghetti sauce or just pan fried in butter with salt and pepper.
@junpower010 HAHAHAHA...be my luck the mouse would live but I would die..mice eat all kinds of junk and survive and they even gnaw through walls, so not sure about that, but sure was funny visualizing it. "Hey, Mickey, take a bite of this." LOL
@NoNORADon911 Well, not sure where you have looked into buying these mushrooms, but my friends at Lost Creek Mushroom Farms have a log they sell for $18. That log will produce mushrooms for years for you. Remember that most commercially grown Shiitakes are grown on compressed sawdust and don't develop the depth of flavor that these log grown ones do. Log grown Shiitakes sell for around $12 a pound. Grow 2 pounds on that little log and you are ahead of the game. Also...Fresh is Best!
man i wanna get into growing mushrooms again, but if i do I'm only growing edibles, you can't get locked up for growing edibles lolzzz. the growing process of mushrooms is a very fascinating and rewarding hobby and i recomend it to everyone.
@1787dude Yes my friend, these mushrooms are magical...but not magic! Stick to these and you will enjoy your meals you prepare with them, and be able to remember them later! ;-)
@MrFish291 Depends on what you mean by "better." This is a somewhat subjective topic. These mushrooms have a greater depth of flavor than your white button mushrooms. That means a little stronger flavor that many people like. They also don't produce the same aroma that the buttons do. YourProduceGuy Youngest Daughter hates the smell of cooking button mushrooms (has to leave the room...or the house!) but she can hardly tell when we are cooking Shiitakes.
Great video, growing your own Shiitake Mushrooms must be so rewarding, that plus the cash it saves! And you are so blessed having an Artseian well near you, sheer bliss OMG I dream of these things. Thanks fro sharing, happy growing, happy cooking! %^)
We get Shiitake Mushrooms from our CSA weekly box and used the last batch as a steak topper. We sauted the mushrooms with salt, fresh cracked black pepper, fresh garlic, onions and olive oil and a splash of Cognac and topped our steaks with that mix, it was wonderful.
Nice video. So do you also grow a winter garden? If not, maybe you can make snow cones with fresh fruit syrups, or a sweet basil, or a spicy tomato granita for the winter season, though that might have been better for summer, lol.
great vid peace yo!! :))

@ShadowWolfRising They regrow. I've got a batch just budding out right now. They produce for 3-4 years.

@YourProduceGuy Great points! I thought after the 1st harvest you need to buy more logs and it appeared
that what you harvest (in dollars) was about the same as it cost to start over. I may have misunderstood or
that system was not a very good one. Will look into this again. I had read about the sawdust with
